<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
' en traits interrompus sur la fige 12) tandis que auand il occupe la.

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
cylindre,
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>
<Desc/Clms Page number 24>
<Desc/Clms Page number 25>
<Desc/Clms Page number 26>
<Desc/Clms Page number 27>
426.
<Desc/Clms Page number 28>

<Desc/Clms Page number 30>

This invention relates to torque limiting clutches, of the type comprising conductive and driven elements with relative movement provided respectively with teeth or dogs intended to mesh. And conform in such a way that the driving force tends. by acting against a biasing force, to cause relative movement of the components and to disengage the teeth. When in these clutches the biasing force is produced by a solenoid, the clutch can be remotely controlled to be made active or inactive and a desirable relationship is obtained between the biasing force or effort and the relative movement. from the elements to produce the meshing of the teeth.
However, the use of electrical equipment is sometimes inappropriate, for example, when this use
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
There is a risk of explosions unless flame-proof wrapping devices are used which tend to be expensive and somewhat complicated.
An object of the invention is to provide a torque limiting clutch which, without the use of a solenoid, can be made active or inactive for driving and can be remotely controlled. More specifically, an object of the invention is to provide a non-electric motor unit comprising a torque limiting clutch capable of causing the operation of a valve or of a similar device.
A torque limiting clutch according to the present invention comprises a conductive element and a driven element capable of moving with respect to one another, provided with teeth or dogs intended to mesh and shaped in such a way; that the driving force tends to produce relative movement of the elements and disengagement of the teeth, and a fluid actuated motor device capable when connected to a source of pressurized fluid to push the elements together against each other. the other with a force which decreases when the elements are separated from each other by the reaction between the teeth or dogs.

an adjustable, single-way restriction valve shown in fig. 12.
As can be seen by 'referring first to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 6, 12 and 13, a main valve 1 of the parallel sliding type is provided with a control rod 2 to which is fixed a bracket 3 having concave arcuate end portions 3a which slide in contact with two respectively. colones.
'verticals 4a, 4d, mounted on the. upper part of the body of the valve 1, such. so that the control rod 2 is prevented from rotating although it is free to slide axially to -provoke the opening or closing of the main valve, an upper part 2a of the control rod 2 has the shape of a. Right-hand threaded vertical rod which enters a pneumatic control device 10 of the valve, fixed to the upper ends of the two columns 4a, 4d and two similar columns 4b, 4c.
The valve control device 10 comprises a base plate 11 fitted to the 4x threaded upper parts of the columns 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d and clamped by nuts 12 against upward facing shoulders 13 which are formed on the columns. .. The upper surface of the base plate 11 has an annular boss 14 extending from bottom to top and provided with a bore 15 formed coaxially with the control rod 2 and provided with a nozzle 16 in which fits. so that. be able to turn the lower end of a cylindrical hub.
17a of a driven star piece 17 provided with an axial bore 18 having a groove 19; a key 20 fixing the star part 17 to a member forming a nut 21 with a threaded hole 22, which positively engages the upper part 2a of the control rod 2.
The member acting as a nut 21 has at its lower emitted a bulge 30 forming a turned shoulder.

upwards 31 which bears against the lower bearing race
32 of a thrust bearing consisting of a ball bearing 33 and which, when the star piece 17 is rotated so as to lower the control rod 2, by means of the member forming a nut, pushes the upper bearing ring 34 of ball bearing 33 against a downward facing shoulder 35 in a downward extension of bore 15.
A seal ring 36 screwed into the lower end of the bore 15 protects the ball bearing 33 against ingress of dust. The downward movement of the nut 21 through the star piece 17 is prevented -by a ring 38 screwed on a party, e threaded intermediate 21a of the member 21 and bearing on the annular surface facing upwards 39 of the star piece. On an upper part of the organ forming a nut 21 is mounted so as to be able to turn a spoked handwheel 45 fixed by a cap-nut 46 screwed to the upper end of the organ 21.
The hub 48 of the handwheel 45 has a step so as to form a downwardly rotating shoulder 50 which normally bears on an annular rim 51 of a ground part forming a bridge 52 which has horizontal parts 53 (see fig. 3). tightened by nuts 54 against the shoulders with faces facing upwards of four columns, two of which are shown at 55 in FIG.
2a, mounted on the upper face of the base plate II.
On the upper end of the descending part 17a of the hub of the star piece 17 is mounted a sleeve forming a bush 60 having at its lower end a radial flange 61 intended to rest on the top of the boss Il + ,, and the hub 62a of a straight toothed wheel 62 fits the sleeve 60, its lower end resting on the upper surface of the flange 61. An upwardly facing surface 63 of the toothed wheel 62 bears against a downward bearing surface 64 of the star coin 17.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The upper surface of the toothed wheel 62 has near the periphery, a circular row of teeth or dogs directed upwards 68, the shape of which is shown in FIG. 5. Opposite the teeth or dogs 68 is a series of complementary teeth or dogs 69 extending from top .-. low on the straight toothed wheel 71.
As shown in fig. each tooth or dog 68 and 69 has. front edge surfaces and .de. trailing edge 73 which are inclined towards the inside of the tooth in a direction which separates them from the toothed wheel 62 or from the toothed wheel 71 on which they are provided, so that regardless of the direction in which the toothed wheel 62 is actuated, the reaction between the teeth tends to separate the conductive element, the toothed wheel 62, from the element, driven, the toothed wheel 71, the flat upper parts 75 of the teeth or dogs 68 thus being able to slide on the parts. :. upper plates 76 of the teeth or dogs 69.
Cogwheel
62 and the toothed roud 71- respectively serve as a conductive element and a driven element of the clutch.
Gear 71 has a series of radial slots, such as slots 80, and flat ears 81 which extend radially and from bottom to top over the workpiece and
17 engage from bottom to top in these slots, the arrangement being such that the toothed wheel 71 is at all times prevented from rotating relative to the star piece 17 but can move in the direction of the axis of the latter.
The toothed wheel 71 has a hub 71a by means of which it is rotatably mounted on the nut member 21 at a point between the ring 38 and the handwheel 45. The upper end of the hub 71a and the opposite end, turned downwards, of the boss of the hub 48 are provided with clutch teeth or complementary dogs 83 of a shape similar to the teeth
68, 69 shown in fig. 5.
The control devices are designed to move

vertically the. toothed wheel 71 between an upper position where the teeth 83 act to couple the handwheel 45 to the toothed wheel 71, and a lower position where the teeth 68,
69 act to couple the toothed wheel 71 to the toothed wheel
62. The dimensions of the teeth 68, 69 and 83 are such that in any case the toothed wheel 71 cannot be coupled simultaneously to the hand wheel 45 and 9 the toothed wheel 62.
The control devices comprise a horizontal control shaft 100 journaled at its ends in bearings 101 and 102 mounted respectively in the part forcing bridge 52 and in a support 103 bolted to the base plate 11.
'The shaft 100 came in one piece with two radial arms, parallel, spaced 104, each having near its external extract a transverse tapped hole 105, whose axis is parallel to that of the shaft 100 and in which is mounted a threaded rod 106 locked in place by a nut 107 and having at its inner end a cylindrical part 108 on which is mounted an arched shoe, 109. The two shoes come into positive contact with the walls of a groove peripheral 110 formed in the circular part? Il !, of the hub of the toothed wheel 71.
It will be noted that the rotation of the shaft 100 over an arc of appropriate amplitude has the effect of moving the toothed wheel 71 vertically between its end-of-travel positions.
The shaft 100 has, near the end where it is journaled in the bearing 102, an outwardly extending lever arm 115, of considerable length which terminates in an assembly fork 116 carrying a pin 117 (see fig. 4) arranged so that its axis is parallel to that of the shaft 100 and positively engages the head of a control rod 119, which includes an adapter sleeve 120 which allows adjustment the length thereof, against nuts 121 being provided for the adapter sleeve.
The lower end of the control rod 119 is provided with a fork

assembly 122 carrying a pin 123 arranged so that its axis is horizontal and perpendicular to that of the pin 117 and positively engaging the upper end
124 of the piston rod 125 of the motor device consisting of an actuator or pneumatic control device 126.
The pneumatic control apparatus 126 comprises a body 127 mounted below the base plate 11 and secured by bolts (not shown) to an annular boss 128 descending to this plate, a downwardly directed tenon 129 formed. on the body extending partially into a bore. 130 of the aque 11.
The body 127 has an axial bore 140 which extends from the bottom up from its lower end and into the tenon 129 and which comprises several parts of different diameters:
Thus, an upper part 140a of the bore 140 has a diameter such that it forms a guide for the piston rod.
125 and is of such length as to form a substantially fluid-tight seal between the stem and the body. The next part 140b of the bore 140 has a great diameter. larger and the underlying portion 140c is of an even larger diameter while below portion 140c the bore tapers slightly to form portion 140d.
The part 140b and the two parts 140c and 140d respectively constitute a small cylinder 141 and a large cylinder 142 of the pneumatic control apparatus, the part 140c constituting a part of larger diameter of the cylinder 142. The part: located lower, c That is, part 140e is of a somewhat larger diameter to accommodate a rubber buffer and seal ring 143. In the upper part of the body 127 is screwed a fitting 144, to which is connected a banjo coupling. 145 at the end of an air intake pipe 146, and the body 127 is drilled to form a duct 147 connecting the fitting 144 to the upper end of the cylinder 141 The body

from a lower part of the cylinder 141 to an upper part of the cylinder 142. Inside the two cylinders 141 and 142 is disposed a double piston 150 comprising an upper part or a small piston 150a, the major part of which is- with a diameter equal to that of cylinder 141 but which has a chamfered upper edge 151,
and a hollow lower part or large piston 150b with a diameter slightly less than that of the part 140d of the bore 140 and whose lower edge is rounded where it comes into contact with the buffer ring 143. It will be noted that when the large piston 150b s is near the lower limit of its stroke it snugly fits into the lower end of cylinder 142. where it plays the role of a leak piston. The small piston 150a .. * Used for. centering the large piston 150b in the cylinder 142 so as to provide an annular air leakage gap from the large piston.
The piston 150 is mounted on a lower portion of the piston rod 125 and is clamped against a central collar 152 thereof by a nut 153 screwed onto the threaded lower portion of the rod 125.
At the lower end of the body 127 is screwed a bell-shaped cylinder bottom 155 having an internal shoulder 156 which comes into contact with the rubber buffer ring.
143 and holds it in place in part 140e of the bore. The bottom 155 has an axis hole.! thread 157 in which is screwed a hollow cap 158 which serves as a seat for the lower end of a compression spring 159, the upper end of which encircles a boss 160 formed on the nut 153. and which acts on the latter to urge the double piston 150 upwards. The compression of the spring 159 can be adjusted by an axial fit of the cap 158 within the bottom 155 and the cap is secured in place by a nut 161.
Cap 158 is provided with an escape lumen 162. '
On the underside of the base plate 11 is

also mounted a pneumatic motor 170 of the well-known type which comprises an air-operated rotor, the direction of rotation of which can be varied and which is coupled, by a speed-inducing gear train mounted in the motor housing, to an output shaft 171 which passes through the base plate 11 from bottom to top.
., $ ur upper end of shaft 171, above the base plate, is mounted a flywheel 172 on the hub of which is formed a right toothed wheel 173 intended to positively actuate a driven right toothed wheel 174. The toothed wheel 174 is mounted on a vertical column 176 whose threaded lower end 177 is screwed into a hole 178 in the base plate 11 and which is provided with a collar 179 which is applied against the upper face of a annular bulge 180 of the base plate.
On the column 176 are also mounted respectively above and below the toothed wheel 174 two clutch plates having them mutually engaged claws or dogs 183 and an annular projection 186 directed towards the web 187 of the toothed wheel 174, annular clutch rings 188 of suitable anti-friction material being interposed between each annular projection 186 and the web 187. The clutch plates 181, together with the rings 188 and the web 187 of the toothed wheel 174 , constitute a friction clutch. The lower clutch plate 181 has a downwardly facing bearing surface
189 and a thrust bearing consisting of a ball bearing
190 is diosed between surface 189 and the upper surface of collar 179.
The upper clutch plate 181 is attached to a hub 192 provided with a nozzle 193 which matches the column 175, the hub. 192 comprising a right toothed wheel 194 intended to positively engage the right toothed wheel 62. It will be seen that the width of the head of the teeth of the toothed wheel 194 is greater than that of the teeth of the toothed wheel 62, so that the Teeth will remain fully meshed despite the certically limited displacement of toothed wheel 194 on column 176.
Part 192 of the hub, and with it the clutch plate

upper 181, are biased up and down towards the lower clutch plate 181 by a coil compression spring 197, acting between a nut 198 screwed onto the upper end of column 176 and the inner surface of the bottom of the column. 'a bush 199 mounted so as to be able to slide on the column, so that the outer surface of its base is applied to the upper rolling race 200 of a thrust bearing consisting of a ball bearing 201, of which the lower ring 202 is in contact with the upper face of the part 192 of the hub.
The drive shaft 100 has a pair of parallel, spaced radial arms 205 which are disposed apart. side of the sleeve 199 and are capable, when the lever arm 115 is raised, to come into contact with a nut 206 screwed on the sleeve 199 and to lift the latter, thereby eliminating. the biasing force of the spring 197 of the upper ayage plate 181. These moving parts are normally protected by a cover 210 attached to the base plate 11.
As is shown more clearly in fig.6p the right toothed wheel 71 is arranged so as to actuate a pair of limiting valves 300 and 301. A right toothed wheel 303 meshing with the toothed wheel 71 is mounted on the upper end of 'a vertical shaft 304 journalled in the base plate 11. It will be seen that the teeth of the toothed wheel 303 have a greater height than the teeth of the toothed wheel 71, so that the two wheels remain complete at all times. - fully engaged despite the limited vertical displacement of the .. toothed wheel 71.
The part of the shaft 304 which is below the base plate 11 has a right-hand thread for most of its length and carries two nuts 305 '306 which are each prevented from rotating as a result of the engagement of a vertical rod 307 in a suitable cavity (not shown) in the nut.
The rotation of the toothed wheel 71 has the effect of moving the two nuts axially along the shaft 304 until they approach a
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
upper limit position or a lower limit position after which one or the other of the nuts meets a corresponding lever, namely the nut 305 the lever 308 of the limiting valve
300 or the nut 306 a lever 309 of the limiting valve
301; if the axial displacement continues to take place, the nuts cause the operation of the limit valve and stop the rotation of the toothed wheel 71 and consequently the displacement of the nuts, in the manner described below.
Air supply to the pneumatic control unit
126 and the air motor 170 is regulated by the development of a hand-held control device 310 (see fig. 12), 'subjected to a short-circuit control exerted by the limiting valves 300 and 301.
Compressed air is brought in through a pipe
311 under the control of a shut-off valve 312 to an air hose ... of large internal diameter .313 going to a lubricator 314 from which the compressed air, charged with an oil mist, passes by a pipe 15 in a shut-off valve 316 of the air distribution of an engine operated by a motive force, this shut-off valve comprising a spool 317 which stops the flow of air when it is in it. an intermediate position shown in FIG.
12, but which, when moving in either direction to a end-of-stroke position, allows air to pass through the valve and a pipe 318 to the air inlet 319. from the engine 170 and from there through a pipe 146 to the air intake manifold 144 of the pneumatic control unit 126.
The valve 321 has an inlet duct 322, communicating with an outlet duct 326 by an annular lumen 323, the effective area of which can be varied by axially adjusting a needle valve 324 screwed into the valve body.
325. A bypass 327 also connects the conduits 322 and 326 and is normally closed by the disc valve 327 urged in the closed position by a spring 328. It will be noted that the circulation of air from the conduit 322 to the conduit. 326 cannot
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
be done only by light 323, while traffic in. the reverse direction can also be done via bypass 327.
The one-way restriction valve 321 reduces the flow of air from the hose 320 to the pneumatic control apparatus 126 but allows full flow upon return of air therefrom. However, this valve is unnecessary if a radial vane air motor is used for the motor 170, because when closing the air valve 316, the motor continues to run, due to its kinetic energy and produces a partial vacuum which causes the phemmatic control mechanism to release the dogs 68, 69 before the speed - of the engine is greatly reduced,
while the air line 146 leading to the pneumatic control mechanism may provide sufficient resistance to circulation to cause the desired delay in engagement of the clutch when the engine is running.
Compressed air is also sent to pipe 313 through pipe 330 to inlet ports 331 and 332 respectively of two slide valves 333 and 334. Valve 333 is of a type where a sliding plunger (not shown is likely to moving axially between two limit positions where it places an exhaust port 335 in communication with the intake port 331 and an exhaust port 336 respectively opening to the atmosphere.
The displacement of the plunger is produced by a rod 337 coupled to the plunger and subjected to the action of a spring which urges it upwards so that it comes into contact with a single boss cam 338 which is mounted on a shaft. rotary 339 provided with a control button 340 capable of occupying three control positions in successive order, the shape and orientation of the cam 238 being such that when the button 340 is in a first position or open position , the rod 337 is lowered so as to put the lens 335 in communication with the light 331 (as indicated

second and third successive positions, the rod
337 is in an elevated position where the lumen 335 is communicated with the exhaust lumen 336 (as indicated by the solid line in Fig. 12). Valve 334 is in all respects similar to valve 333 and includes a rod 342 spring biased upward to contact a single boss cam 343 mounted on shaft 339, but oriented relative to the button. control
340 such that when the button is in its first and second positions in the sequence, the rod 342 occupies an elevated position where an exhaust port 344 of the valve 334 is,
communication with an escape light 345 of the valve (as indicated by the pléin line on fig 12), while when the control button occupies the third position or closed position of the sequence , the rod '342' is in the lowered position where: the exhaust port 344 is communicated with the intake port 332 (as indicated by the dashed line in Fig. 12).
The exhaust ports 335 and 344 are respectively connected by pipes 350 and 351 to the intake ports.
352 and 353 of the two limit valves 300 and 301. These limit valves are similar in interior construction to valves 333 and 334.
The valve plunger 300 is positively connected to a rod 355 biased by a spring to come into contact with a lever 356 mounted near one end thereof on a pivot 357 and hinged near the other end 358 at a. short rod 359 guided so as to bear against a nose 360 of the lever
308. The latter is mounted on a pivot 362 which has, on the side of the pivot 362 opposite to that of the beç 360, a cavity 363 the sides of which are struck respectively by @ @

at the lever during its travel in opposite directions.
When the nut 305 is at a central point of the threaded portion of the shaft 304, the levers and 356 assume the positions shown in Fig. 12 and the exhaust port 370 of the valve 300 is brought into position. communication with the light., intake 352 (as indicated by the solid line in fig. 12) but when the nut is caused to move, until it comes to the height of the lever 308 and hitting it, the rod 355 is caused to move inwardly of the valve
300 so as to put the exhaust port 370 in communication with an exhaust port 371 (as indicated by the dashed line in fig. 12) which is in communication,
with the atmosphere-
The plunger of the limiting valve 301 is coupled in a similar fashion by a rod 375, a lever 376, and another rod 379 to the lever 309 which is disposed and intended to be struck by the nut 306 as it approaches. the limit of its descending course.
The limiting valve 301 is provided with an exhaust port 390 and an exhaust port 391 and, when: 1. nut 306 is at a central point of the threaded portion of the shaft 304, the exhaust port 390 is communicated with the intake port 353 (as indicated by the solid line on the pin 12), but when the nut is caused to move until it comes to the level of the lever 309 and collides with the latter, the rod 375 is moved inside 1 valve 301 so as to put the light exhaust 390 in communication with exhaust port 391 (as indicated by the dashed line in Fig. 12).
The exhaust ports 370 and 390 of the limiting valves are respectively connected by pipes 395 and 396 to the opposite ends of a double-acting engine cylinder 397 in which is located a piston 398 coupled by a rod 399
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
to a 400 reversal gear coupled to the air motor
170.
The piston rod 399 is connected by a lever 401, mounted on a central pivot 402, to a rod 403 coupled to the spool 317 of the stop valve 316, the arrangement being such that when the reversing mechanism is in the position desired .. for forward or reverse travel of the pneumatic motor 170, the spool 317 is in the desired position for the compressed air intake to the pipe 318.
The piston rod 399 is biased by springs (not shown) towards the intermediate position shown in Fig. 12, where the stop valve 316 is closed.
The operation of the device according to the invention described above with reference to FIGS. 1 to 6, 12 and 13 is done as, follows: '
The role of the valve control apparatus 10 is to effect a height-wise adjustment of the position of the control rod 2 of the main valve 1 to bring it into the. desired position of full opening, full closing, or partial opening.
If you wish to completely close the main valve 1, with the compressed air distribution shut-off valve 312 open, the control knob 340 (see fig. 12) is turned so as to bring it into its position. third dispensing position or closed position, thus putting the exhaust port 344 of the valve 334 in communication with the port, but leaving the exhaust port 335 of the valve 333 in communication: with the light of evacuation 336.
As a result, the compressed air arrives through pipe 351 at the inlet port 353 of the limiting valve 301, and unless the main valve 1 is already closed, in which case the nut 306 will have actuated the valve. limit 301 to block communication between ports 353 and 390, the compressed air will flow through pipe 39.6 to one end of engine cylinder 397 and push piston 398 toward the other end of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
cylinder,
air moves from this second end of the cylinder heading through pipe 395 to the exhaust port 370 of the limitation valve 300. If the nut 305 is in such a position on the shaft 304 that the lever 308 has been actuated to put the exhaust port in communication with the exhaust light 371, this displaced air will escape to the atmosphere through the exhaust port 371. Otherwise, the displaced air will, will go through valve 300 into intake port 352 and from there through pipe 350 into exhaust port 335 of the valve
333 and through it into the exhaust lumen 336 to drain into the atmosphere.
The movement of the piston 398 causes the piston rod 399 to move so as to bring the cover mechanism 400, into the position desired to rotate the rotor of the air motor 170 in a first direction, hereinafter referred to as the forward direction, so that the flywheel 172 rotates counterclockwise when viewed in plan. The movement of the piston rod 399 also acts on the lever 401 and the rod 403 so as to effect the opening of the stop valve 316, thereby admitting pressurized air to the inlet of the piston. air 319 of the motor 170, the rotor of which starts rotating in the forward direction and gradually gains speed.
The opening of the stop valve 316 also allows air to pass through the pipe 320 to the valve 321, which reduces the flow of air through the pipe 146 into the pneumatic control apparatus. 126, so that the air pressure applied thereto does not reach a sufficient value to perform effective work, during a short period of time in which the rotor of the motor 170 reaches its full working speed .
If we now refer to fig. 4, during the admission of compressed air to the pipe 142 and consequently to the fitting 144 of the pneumatic control unit 126, the air released
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
bank through the conduit 147 at the upper end of the cyline 141 where it exerts on the double piston 150 a force determined by the. magnitude of the air pressure and the dimensions of the piston 150a and the piston rod 125. When the piston rod 125 is allowed to descend, the effective up and down force produced on the piston falls, since during the first part of the stroke, the force by the air pressure on the piston, 150a remains constant while the bottom-up reaction of the compression spring 159 increases.
When approximately half of its downstroke has been completed, the piston
10a begins to uncover the entrance to the transfer conduit 148, the chamfered portion 151 in combination with the cooperating end of the conduit 148 serving as a throttle valve and the chamfered portion 151 having the effect of reducing the action of. 'The throttle gradually as the piston descends.
Once the inlet of the transfer duct 148 is partially uncovered the air passes from the cylinder 141 through the duct 148 into the upper end of the cylinder 142 and tends to escape along the leakage piston 150b to enter the 'space under the double piston and from there through the exhaust duct 162 to the atmosphere. The pressure which builds up in the upper part of the cylinder 142 therefore depends on the degree of restriction of the entry to the duct 148 by the chamfered part 151, the dimensions of the duct 148, and the degree of leakage along the piston 150b. , this leak being eliminated when the lower end of the piston 150b enters the part 140d of the bore.
As a result, the net up and down force on piston rod 125 increases as the rod descends above the middle of its stroke. Near the lower limit of its stroke, the lower end of the piston 150b comes into contact with the buffer ring 143 which then exerts a bottom-up reaction on the piston and thus reduces the degree of increase in pressure. net force directed from top to bottom on the piston rod during the latter part of its stroke.
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
These variations in the net force exerted up and down on the piston rod during its downstroke are shown graphically in fig. It by the curve 410.
It will therefore be noted that when opening the shut-off valve! 316, the piston rod 125 of the apparatus the pneumatic control 126 is drawn downwards, and this movement is transmitted by means of the control rod 119 to the lever arm 115, thereby exerting on the 'shaft 100 a suple which turns the shaft to allow the descent of the sleeve 199 (see fig. 2b) under the action of the spring' 197 so as to make the friction clutch effective and to displace, the toothed wheel 71 positively from top to bottom until the teeth or dogs 69 mesh with the teeth or dogs 68, of,
such that the toothed wheel 62 is positively coupled through these teeth to the toothed wheel 71 and consequently through the flat ears 81 to the star piece 17 and to the nut 21.
It has already been pointed out that the function of the valve 321 (see fig. 12) is to delay the application of full air pressure to 1 - * - pneumatic control unit 126 and that consequently the motor was given the option of the motor. tire 170 to pick up speed until it reaches working speed.
The flywheel 172 (see FIG. 2b) thus reaches an appropriate working speed before the bush 199 is released to allow the compression spring 197 to exert a force from top to bottom. on the upper clutch plate 185, thus clamping the web 187 of the toothed wheel 174 between the two clutch plates 185 and thus transmitting the rotation transmitted by the motor 170 by means of the toothed wheels 173 and 174, to the toothed wheel 194, through the upper clutch plate 185, and therefore to the toothed wheel 62.
Thus, during the operation of the tick control apparatus 126, the motor 170 rotates the toothed wheel 62,
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
via the teeth or dogs 68, 69, the toothed wheel 71, the ears 81, the star piece 17 and the key 20, to rotate the member forming the nut 21 ..
The forward direction of rotation of the rotor of motor 170 is counterclockwise! clockwise, with respect to a plan view., therefore the member acting as a nut 21 also rotates counterclockwise and, like the upper end 2a of the control rod 2 of the main valve is provided with a right-hand thread, the stem 2 is forced to move up and down to cause the main valve 1 to close.
The toothed wheel 71 rotates, at the same time as the nut-forming member-2,1, in a counterclockwise direction, and turns the toothed wheel 303, as well as the shaft 304. on which it turns. is mounted, in a clockwise direction of a watch.
Since the lower portion of shaft 304 is provided with a left-hand thread, this rotation of shaft 304 lowers the two nut pieces 305 and 306 along the shaft until the Nut 306 meets lever 309 and thereby causes displacement of the plunger of limiting valve 301 so as to interrupt the flow of air. compressed in the valve from the intake port 353 to the exhaust port 390 and to place the latter in communication with the exhaust port 391.
This communication of the pipe 396 with the exhaust port 391 allows the biasing springs associated with the piston rod 399 of the working cylinder 397 to return the piston 398 to the central position shown in Fig. 12, after which the release mechanism. overturn 400 occupies a / neutral position and the stop valve 316 is closed. The pitch of the screw thread of the shaft 304 is chosen in such a way and the nut 306 is placed on the shaft 304 in such a position that the nut 306 actuates the lever 309 when the main valve 1 is turned off. its fully closed position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
Closing the shut-off valve 316 cuts off the supply of compressed air to motor 170 and pneumatic control unit 126, air from the latter returning through the hose.
146 to the motor 170 so that the pressure in the apparatus is reduced rapidly. As a result, the piston rod 125 of the latter is pushed from bottom to top by the spring
159 and this movement rotates, through the lever arm 115, the drive shaft 100, so as to lift the socket 199, after which the flywheel 172 of the engine can continue to turn without actuating the toothed wheel 194 Further, the rotation of the shaft 100 raises the toothed wheel 71 so that the teeth 69 disengage from the teeth 68 and the series of teeth.
83 engage each other to couple the toothed wheel 71 with the hand wheel 45.
If you want to fully open the valve, pay
1, the control knob 340 is rotated so as to return it to its first position in the open position, thereby bringing the exhaust port 344 of the valve 334 into communication with the exhaust port 345 and lowering the rod 337, to move the plunger of the valve 333 so as to put the exhaust port 335 of this valve in communication with the intake port 331.
As a result, the compressed air flows along the pipe 350 to the inlet port 352 of the limiting valve 300, and unless the main valve 1 is already open, in which case the nut 305 has actuated. the limiting valve 300 to block the communication between the ports 352 and 370, the compressed air circulates in the pipe 395 to reach the second end of the working cylinder 397 and push the piston 398 towards the first end of the cylinder, air displaced from this first end of the cylinder traveling along pipe 396 to the exhaust port 390 of the limit switch 301.
If the nut, 306 is on the shaft 304 in such a position that it has already operated the lever 309 to
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
putting the exhaust port 390 in communication with the exhaust port 391, this displaced air escapes to the atmosphere through the exhaust port 391. Otherwise, the displaced air goes through the valve 301 to the atmosphere. intake port 353 and from there through pipe 351 to exhaust port 344 of valve 334 ... and through valve to port 345 and hence to atmosphere.
This movement of the piston 398 moves the. piston rod 399 so as to put the reversal mechanism 400 in the desired position to rotate the rotor of the air motor 170 in the opposite direction, that is, in such a direction that the flywheel 172 turns in the opposite direction. clockwise, from a plan view - The displacement of the piston
398 thus causes the shut-off valve 316 to open and thereby allows the compressed air to flow to the air motor 170 which begins to rotate in the opposite direction, and to the air control unit 126 under. control of the valve 321, the sequence of cases being similar to that of the cases described above for the closure of the.
main valve 1, but the nut member 21, then rotates clockwise, seen in plan, so that the valve stem 2 is pulled upwards so as to open the main valve 1, while the shaft 304 rotates counterclockwise so that the nuts 305, 306 rise on the shaft 304, when the control rod 2 of the main valve 1 s The pupil, the nut 305, being placed / on the shaft 304 in a position such that when the stem 2 reaches a position at which the main valve 1 is fully open, the nut 305 meets the lever 308 to cause the closing the compressed air valve 316, thereby disengaging the flywheel 172 from the toothed wheel 194 and lifting the toothed wheel 71 to release.
to connect this toothed wheel, to the toothed wheel 62 and to couple it to the hand wheel 45 in a manner, similar to that described above for the operation of the limiting valve 301.
<Desc / Clms Page number 24>
If it is desired to adjust the control rod 2 of the main valve in any position between the fully open and fully closed positions, this can be done by placing the control knob 340 either in the open position or in the fully closed position. the closed position as the case may be, and observing the movement of the rod 2 until it occupies the desired position, after which the control button is returned to its second position or "out" position, the admission of compressed air which took place either through the pipe 350 or through the pipe 351 being then interrupted and this pipe being placed in co. communicating with the atmosphere through the associated exhaust port 336 or 345, thereby causing the shutoff valve 316 to close and stop movement of the. rod 2.
Manual adjustment of the control rod 2 of the main valve 1 can be done when the stop valve 31 is closed or when the control knob 340 is placed in its "off" position. In these two cases the handwheel
45 is coupled, by 1 (through teeth 83, the toothed wheel
71, the ears 81 and the star piece 17, to the nut and is thus able to rotate the nut and consequently to adjust the control rod 2 axially.
Whenever the air motor 170 is brought into a state to actuate the nut member 21, torque is transmitted from the toothed wheel 62 to the toothed wheel 71 as a result of the teeth or dogs 68 engaging with the teeth or dogs 69.
The control is transmitted via the inclined edges 73 of the teeth so that an axial reaction is produced on the two toothed wheels and tends to separate them. A force applied from top to bottom on the toothed wheel 71 by the drive shaft 100 by means of the arms 104 normally resists this reaction. If for some reason the movement of the control rod 2 of the main valve is braked or stopped, the teeth 69 tend to slide on the inclined edges 73 of the teeth.
<Desc / Clms Page number 25>
68 and thus separate the toothed wheels 62 and 71 from one another.
The force tending to separate the gears 62 and
71 is transmitted through the arms 104, the shaft 100, the lever arm 115 and the control rod 119 to the piston rod 125 and acts against the force of the pistons 150a, 150b. When this force becomes so great that the pistons are moved away from their final positions, as soon as the larger piston 150b separates from the buffer ring 143 'there is a leakage of the pressurized fluid on the periphery of this piston and the pressure acting on the large piston begins to fall.
The upward movement of the pistons in the direction corresponding to the release of the clutch is therefore accompanied by a rapid decrease in force and the clutch disengages in a rapid and precise manner. The larger diameter portion of the large cylinder releases the pressurized fluid which acts on the large piston during the return stroke. The arrangement is such that the pneumatic control apparatus exerts a reduced force which tends to tighten the dogs 68, 69 against each other, even when the dogs 69 slide on the head or the crown 75 of the dogs 68.
The pneumatic control device 126 has a useful power rod position characteristic, indicated by curve 410 in FIG. 11 which is extremely advantageous in this particular application of the pneumatic control apparatus, as it gives rise to a relatively large force to urge the toothed wheel 71 towards the toothed wheel 62 when the teeth or dogs 68, 69 are fully in place. taken; nevertheless if the control rod of the main valve encountered a serious resistance to its free movement, causing the dogs 69 to slide on the dogs 68, the piston rod 125 is brought back into place energetically and the force developed by the device
<Desc / Clms Page number 26>
order drops significantly.
In the considered control apparatus shown, the force which it generates falls gradually when the dogs 68, 69 slide from their fully engaged positions to their initial engaged positions, to a value of approximately 17%. of the value corresponding to full engagement. Thus the control unit 126 gives rise together with the clutch teeth or dogs
68, 69 to a torque limiting clutch.
When the dogs 68, 69 have passed the pneumatic control unit acts in such a way as to push the gear toothed wheel 71 up and down into its "full engagement" position, but as a result of the circumferential spacing of the dogs 68 and dogs 69 the toothed wheel 62 is capable of rotating freely, without actuating the toothed wheel 71, of a large amplitude before the dogs 68, 69 come from no to the engagement. This free rotation allows the pneumatic motor 170 to resume its full operating speed / and, when the dogs 68, 69 meet, the valve stem 2 is subjected to a torsional force partially resulting from the kinetic energy of the rotating members. .
This torsional impulse momentarily exceeds the value of the torque necessary, during the disengagement of the clutch, to overcome the inertia of the parts requiring acceleration during this action of disengaging the clutch. If the resistance to the displacement of the rod, control 2 of the main valve was not overcome by the effect of the first uncoupling and re-coupling of the clutch, the clutch operates several times successively in the same way to administer a series of pulses, twisting until resistance is removed, after which the dogs. remain fully engaged.
A serious defect can prevent these torsion pulses from overcoming the resistance to displacement of the main valve stem 2 and in this case the action of the overloaded clutch gives an audible signal revealing the defect.
<Desc / Clms Page number 27>
Although the pneumatic control apparatus 126 discussed above has been described in its application to a cut-limiting clutch incorporated in a pneumatic valve control mechanism, it is understood that it can be applied not only to '' other types of valve control devices, but also torque limiting clutches used for quite different uses
In addition, the actual shape of the pneumatic control unit may vary.
Thus, fig. 7 shows an alternative pneumatic commnade device 426 capable of. operate in principle in the same manner as control apparatus 126 and intended for use in a control mechanism. pneumatic valve similar in essence to the mechanism 10 and comprising a control shaft corresponding to the shaft 100 but .disposed in such a way that radial arms corresponding to the radial arms 104 are located. on the opposite side of the shaft with respect to a lever arm corresponding to the lever arm 115.
In such an arrangement, it is necessary for the lever arm to be pushed upwards, when the air pressure is applied to the pneumatic control device 426.
As for the control unit 126 shown in
Fig. 4, this lever 'arm' carries an assembly shackle pin 117Z whose axis is parallel to that of the drive shaft and which positively engages a 118x link formed at the end. top of a 119x control rod which includes an adapter sleeve by means of which its length can be adjusted, 121x locknuts being clamped against the sleeve.
The lower end of. the 119x control rod is provided with a 122x assembly fork carrying a 123x spindle whose axis is horizontal and perpendicular to that of the 117Z spindle and which engages in the upper end 124x of the 125x piston of a motor device in the form of a. pneumatic control unit
426.
<Desc / Clms Page number 28>
The pneumatic control apparatus 426 comprises a body 427 mounted below a base plate 11x corresponding to the base plate li and secured by bolts (not shown) to a descending annular boss 428 of this plate, a tenon 429 formed from bottom to top on the body passing through a bore 430 of the plate llx. Body 427 has an axial bore 440 which extends from bottom to top, from its lower end, into post 429 and which includes several.
'parts of different diameters. Thus, an upper section 440a of the bore 440 is threaded over an upper part of its length and serves as a casing for a guide 441 of the piston rod 125, this guide being screwed into the threaded part 440a and provided with a Knuckle nut 442. The guide 441 has a length such that it forms a substantially fluid-tight seal between the rod and the guide. The next portion 440b of the bore 44 is of much larger diameter and the body has a lumen d. drain 442 which opens in this part of the bore.
The underlying portion 440c is of even larger diameter and serves as a housing for a 143x rubber seal and buffer ring, while the lower portion 440d is of even larger diameter and is threaded. A lower part 449 of the body is threaded at its extract. upper to screw into the portion 440d of the lightening and has an axial bore 450 which extends its upper end to near its closed lower end 449a and comprises several parts of different diameters.
The lowest point portion 450a of the bore is somewhat larger in diameter than the overlying portion 450b and forms a chamber 451 with an inlet lumen 452 in the outer end of which A fitting 453 is screwed onto the end of an air intake pipe 146x which corresponds to the air intake pipe 146 of the embodiment previously described with reference to Figs. 1 to 6.
The
<Desc / Clms Page number 29>
part 450c of the bore, which is immediately above the. part 450b of the bore, is of much larger diameter than the latter and the. the uppermost part 450d of this bore is somewhat smaller in diameter than that of the part 450c. The two parts 450a and 450b and the two parts 450c and 450d, respectively constitute small cylinders and large cylinders 461 and 462 of the pneumatic control apparatus, the part 450c constituting a part of larger diameter of the cylinder 462. The body portion 449 is drilled to form a transfer duct 463 extending from an intermediate portion of cylinder 461 to the lower end of cylinder 462.
Inside the two cylinders 461 and 462 was
A double piston 470 comprising a lower part than the small piston 470a, the major part of which is of a diameter equal to that of the part 450b of the bore but which has a chamfered lower edge 471, and an upper part or large piston 470b somewhat smaller in diameter than part 450d of bore 450.
It will be seen that when the large piston 470b is near the upper limit of its stroke it fits without leakage into the upper end of cylinder 462 and that when it descends there is a leak * when it enters. the enlarged part of the cylinder 462.
The double piston 470 is coupled to the lower end of the piston rod 125x by a collar sleeve 472 screwed into a housing 473 formed in the upper face of the piston and bearing on an enlarged end 474 of the piston rod: A spring compression coil 475 bearing at one end against the collar of the sleeve 472 and at the other end against the guide 441 is intended to urge the painful piston 470 towards the bottom of the control apparatus 426.
When compressed air enters the 146x hose at the lower end of cylinder 461, it exerts a force on the Double Diston 470 depending on the size of the cylinder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 30>
air pressure and small piston diameter 470a. As the piston rod 125x rises, the effective upward force produced on the piston rod falls, since in the first part of its stroke the force produced by the air pressure on the piston 470a remains constant, while the reaction exerted from top to bottom by the compression spring 475. increases.
When it is approximately in the middle of its upward stroke, the small piston 470a begins to discover the entry of the transfer duct 463, the chamfered part 471 having the effect of reducing the action of gradually throttling to me. as the piston rises. As soon as the inlet to transfer duct 463 is partially uncovered, air passes from the cylinder.
461 through the transfer duct 463 in the lower end of the cylinder 462 and tends to escape at the periphery of the leakage piston 470b into the space above the double piston 0 and thence through the exhaust port 442 in the air.
The pressure which builds up in the lower part of the cylinder 462 therefore depends on the degree of the constriction at the entry of the duct 463 by the chamfered part 471, the dimensions of the duct 463 and the size of the leak at the periphery. of the piston 470b, this leak being suppr'mée when the upper end of the piston 470b penetrates inside the part 450d of the bore where it fits in a relatively tight manner.
As a result the net upward force on the piston rod 12x increases as the rod rises above its / milien of its stroke, until the upper end of the piston 470b actually meets the buffer ring 143x, which This exerts a downward reaction on the piston and thereby reduces the degree of increase in the net upward force applied to the piston rod over a final portion of its stroke. It will be noted that the chamfered part 471 acting in cooperation with the end of the ash 463 acts as a throttle valve.
These variations in the net upward force applied to the

The pneumatic control device, 500 is of the type. forward action shown in FIG. 4 where when compressed air is sent thereto a control rod 119y, corresponding to the control rod 119 of the pin 4, is pushed back from top to bottom. The lower end of the control rod 191y is provided with a yoke 122y carrying a connecting link pin
123y with a horizontal axis positively engaging the upper end 124y of a piston rod 125y of the pneumatic control unit 500.
The latter comprises a body 501 mounted below the base plate 11y, which corresponds to the base plate 11 of FIGS. 1 to 5, and fixed by bolts or studs
502, at this base; a bottom-up post 503 on the body extending to a certain depth in a bore 504 formed in the plate 11y. The body has an axial bore 505, the major part of which is of uniform diameter but which has at its upper end an enlargement forming a chamber 506 from which an upwardly directed air intake lumen leaves. upper end is threaded to receive an air inlet fitting 508 which protrudes a hole 509 in the base plate 11y.
A vertical extension 510 of the bore 505 of much smaller diameter than the bore itself extends low up into the tenon 503 and serves as a guide for the piston rod 125y, the length being sufficient to form a practically tight seal. -

che to the fluid between the piston rod and the body. This piston rod has a middle collar 511 against the underside of which a piston 512 is clamped by a nut 513 screwed onto the threaded lower part 514 of the piston rod.
The upward movement of the piston rod in the body 501 is limited by the meeting of the collar 511 with the bottom 515 of the chamber 506 or, alternatively, by the adjustment of the control rod 119y, while the downward movement of the piston rod is limited by a nut 516 mounted on a threaded portion 517 of the rod 125y, above the base plate 11y, blocked above by a lock nut 518 and intended to apply. on the upper surface of the tenon 503 to stop the downward movement of the piston rod. The upper end of the bore 505 constitutes a cylinder 519 in which the piston 512 operates with gentle friction.
Two pairs of ears 520 are formed on the outer face of body 501 respectively at diametrically opposed points, each pair of ears carrying a horizontal pivot 521 which serves as a hinged mount for a reverse elbow lever arm 522,. the lower ends 522a of the two lever arms 522 extending down side by side / vertically below the piston 512. These lower ends 522a are forced at 523 to admit with considerable lateral play a rod 524 which presents at each end a threaded portion 525 on which is screwed a nut 526.
On the rod 524 between each nut 526 and the adjacent end 522a of the lever arm 522a is mounted a compression spring .527 bearing at its two ends against bushings 528a, 528b adapted on the rod 524 and bearing respectively against the end 522a of the lever arm and against the nut 526. Each sleeve 528a and the associated lever arm are shaped such that they form at their point of contact a ball joint 529. The two springs 527 thus tend to bring the two springs closer together. lever arm 522 with a force which increases as the distance between the two arms increases.

On the threaded part 514 of the piston rod 125 y, a bracket 530 is clamped in place in an adjustable manner, by two nuts 531 placed respectively above or below the cross piece, each end thereof. , carrying a pivot 532 on which are mounted a pair of handcuffs 533 coupled by their outer ends to the adjacent lever arm 522 by a transverse pin 534.
The pneumatic control apparatus 500 is enclosed in a protective box 535 secured by studs or bolts (not shown) to the underside of the base plate 11 y.
When admitting compressed air through the connection
508 In cylinder 519 a downward force is applied to piston 512, the magnitude of this force depending on the diameter of the piston, that of the piston rod 125y and the air pressure. If the piston descends while the air pressure is held constant, the effective descending force applied to the piston rod will vary as indicated by the curve.
550 in fig. 11.
When the piston rod goes down, the torque produced on the arms 522 by the springs 527 increases progressively: - as the arms oscillate around their pivots 521, but at the same time the change of inclination of the handcuffs
533 relative to the axis of the piston rod 125y causes a gradual drop in the ratio "angular displacement of the arms 522 / axial displacement of the piston rod 125y" and also a gradual drop in the ratio "axial force applied -on the rod to track 12511 torque on the 522 "arms, the net effect of these variations being the characteristic curve 550.
It can be shown that in the arrangement shown, the force "E" exerted by each compression spring and acting in the direction of the axis of the piston rod 125y turn opposes the torus. exerted on the piston by compressed air

in cylinder 519 is given by
EMI34.1
E = (Ki + ds) sin A K3 cos w where K1 is a constant depending on the initial degree of compression of the spring 527, that is to say when it is in the position shown in fig. 8; d is a measure of the further reduction in the length of spring 527; . s is a constant depending on the stiffness of the spring 527;
A is the angle between the axis of the handcuff 533 and a

perpendicular to the axis of the piston rod 125 ,;
K3 is a constant depending on the physical dimensions of the lever arm 522; w is the angle between the axis of the handcuff and a perpendicular to the line joining the axes 521 and 534.
As a result, the upward force applied to the piston rod 125y by the springs 527 first increases to a maximum value approximately in the middle of its stroke, and then falls to a value which, if the handcuff could become horizontal would be zero. The effective downward force produced by the control unit on the piston rod 125y therefore passes through a minimum value at approximately the middle of its stroke.
Fig. 9 shows the position, the lowest that the piston rod 12y reaches, and it will be noted that the handcuffs 533 never pass through a horizontal position beyond which they could exert a downward force on the piston rod 125y.
As in the construction of the pneumatic control apparatus 126 and; 146 shown respectively in figs. 4 and 7, over a part of the stroke going from one posi-

For comparison only, fig. 11 comprises a curve 600 indicating the characteristic curve obtained. in an electrically actuated solenoid control apparatus of the type commonly employed, where the valve controlling device is actuated by an electric motor.
In the embodiment of the control apparatus described above with reference to FIGS. 8 ,; 9 and 10, the admission of the pressurized fluid to the cylinder moves the piston rod inside the cylinder, but so desired a device. control comprising a similar mechanism can be arranged

Thus the cylinder of the control apparatus can be provided at its open end with a cylinder base through which the rod of the rod passes, the wall of the cylinder being provided; a duct for admitting the flow under pressure into the space between the piston and the cylinder base, the handcuffs being at the same time inclined in the appropriate direction.
