<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO METHODS AND DEVICES-FOR SEPARATING FIBERS, MORE SPECIFICALLY-THOSE USED FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY,
OF A CURRENT OF AIR THAT SERVES IT AS A VEHICLE.
In the textile industry, a pneumatic installation is used for the transport of starting or spinning materials, such as wool, cotton, cellulose wool, animal hair, etc. This is established, for example, between processing machines which serve to disintegrate the materials in order to allow their spinning. In order to separate the fibers from the air stream, near the treatment machines, a rotating screening drum has already been established in the conveyor duct, out of which the air is sucked in by a fan while the fibers are deposited on the rotating screen, The fibers and the conveyor air stream are thus completely separated, -. The fibers are then detached using a squeegee set at a suitable location on the wall of the drum.
Separator devices, also called fiber condensers, of the above-mentioned type, have the disadvantage that the deposition of the fibers on the wall of the screening drum creates a high resistance to the air flow which carries them. In addition, it is often necessary to clean the fine mesh wall, for example a perforated sheet, of the drum. The biggest drawback, however, is the tightness of the. layer of fibers, thus formed, against the sieve which results in a pile-up of the fibers whereas the latter should, on the contrary, be broken up.
The process which forms the subject of the invention and which serves to completely separate the fibers from the air stream which conveys them, consists in effecting the separation of the fibers and the carrier air stream by means of the centrifugal force in a separator device which operates on the principle of a centrifugal separator. Important advantages obtained by the process reside in reduced energy consumption and in proper disintegration of fibrous materials. The reduced energy consumption results from the significantly less resistance created in the conveyor duct and the elimination of the drive mechanism.
A device that is particularly suitable for setting up

work of the aforesaid process, comprises a fixed cylindrical or slightly conical box, into which opens, near a bottom of the box, an air supply duct, loaded with fibers, in a direction sensi = ably tangential then that the air outlet duct is provided on the said bottom near its central part, the wall of the box, in the vicinity of the other bottom of the latter, widening progressively in the direction of the circulation of fibers along the side wall of the box. to an opening which communicates with a discharge device.
By the effect of centrifugal force, the fibrous materials follow a helicoidal path along the wall of the cylindrical canister towards the discharge opening without the risk of these fibers settling or collapsing. agglomerate in any other way. The air, freed from the fibers, escapes through the outlet duct established on a bottom of the box without the separation of the fibers being able to adversely affect the air resistance or the air flow. By a particular -constitution of the outlet opening for the fibers, delimited by a wall which widens outwards and which gradually connects to the side wall of said box,
the fibrous material is obtained to advance towards the corresponding end of the box without undergoing any appreciable deflection and is collected in the discharge device, in the form of a pocket, which is sealed off from the outside air so that air is prevented from escaping there. ' The part of the wall of the box which is widened in a particular way forms a guide for the fibrous materials to the aforesaid discharge device.
The discharge device can be made in different ways. According to a very simple embodiment, it is made to include a valve with a cell wheel established downstream of the outlet opening, the axis of this valve being advantageously parallel to that of the separator box. To prevent the cell wheel from jamming in the casing of the valve, this wheel is made to have a width greater than that of the outlet opening. In this way, fibers can be deposited only in the cells of the valve. In addition, the partitions which separate the cells are made of an elastic material. The outer edges of these partitions can also be formed by elastic strips, for example by rubber plates.
In this way, a good seal is obtained between the cell valve and its casing and, in addition, the fibers which adhere to the cell partitions are obtained at the outlet from the discharge device, become detached from these when these partitions straighten out passing in front of this exit. Advantageously, the cell valve is rotated at a reduced speed, but sufficient so that the cells do not run the risk of being overfilled and that the fibers are not stuffed in these cells. The valve can be driven by a motor which can be small and low in power.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show, respectively in elevation, in cross section along a-b fig. 1 and in cross section according to c-d fig. 1. a separator (vortex condenser), established: * in accordance with the invention.
The air, which is loaded with fibers, is admitted tangentially, through the conduit 2, into the box 1 which is cylindrical or slightly conical towards the bottom 3 of the box. The fibers therefore advance in a helical movement towards said bottom 3 and the air, freed of fibers, flows through the discharge duct or the outlet 4 which are established along the longitudinal axis of the box 1. The inlet duct 2 has a width such that it extends only over a relatively small part of the length of the box 1.
Near the bottom 3, in the side wall of the box, a discharge opening 7 is provided which may be circular, polygonal or oval. The part of the wall of the box which is located near this opening is flared, as shown in fig 3, in the direction of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
flow of fibers: towards the discharge opening 7 and towards the outside 'so that the fibers which advance in the direction of the arrow x, are introduced without undergoing any deviation, into the cells of a de- charge. The flaring of the wall of the box is advantageously carried out along a parabola, for example along a projectile trajectory ', so that good guidance is obtained, from the point of view of the flow, of the fibrous materials.
Between the air inlet 2 and the part of the box 1 which begins to widen. at 5 and which has the outlet opening 7, there is a section of great length of the box in which the fibers are separated from the air stream and are directed towards the outlet opening, '-
Fig. 3 shows that the discharge device, which communicates with the box 1, is formed by a cellular valve 8. This comprises a casing 9 which is cylindrical over the greater part of its contour and in which the valve can turn. cell wheel 10; mechanically driven.
The axis of the wheel 10 is parallel to that of the box 1. The partitions 11 which separate the cells can be made of an elastic material. For the example shown, a marginal strip 12 which is made of an elastic material and which rubs against the internal face of the cylindrical casing 9 is fixed on each of these partitions II which are for example made of metal. The cells of the impeller 10 are dimensioned such that the outlet opening is always isolated from the discharge port of the valve so that air cannot escape. The width of the cell wheel is larger than the width of the outlet opening 7.
The fiber separator or condenser can be arranged in such a way that its axis is vertical, oblique or horizontal.
