RAYON ET RAYONNAGE POUR PLATEFORMESo

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

SHELF AND SHELVING FOR PLATFORMS
The invention relates to storage shelves or racks for platforms for handling material or objects.
The use of platforms for object or material handling operations has become more and more common. These platforms are generally provided with a support surface for equipment or objects, which is raised to provide the space necessary to receive the arms of a forklift truck intended to lift and transport the platform as well. material or the objects she carries. The platforms can either be of the flat type for handling objects stacked thereon, or they can be provided with retractable or collapsible side walls to contain objects of irregular shape.
Each of these types of platforms is ordinarily arranged in such a way that the platforms and the equipment or, supported objects can be stacked in superposition to thereby occupy a minimum of space.
The use of platforms speeds up the handling or handling of material or objects, and stacking protects the location. However, in many cases, it is often necessary to be able to immediately access the equipment or objects of a given platform, in particular in order to carry out machining or operations on said equipment or objects. If the platform in question is in a stack of platforms, and if it is located ;: towards the bottom of the stack, it is necessary to remove the platforms superimposed on the desired platform before having access to them.
It is then necessary to re-stack the platforms which have been removed in order to gain access to the targeted platform. Obviously, this situation results in a considerable expenditure of time and. an undesirable increase in the costs of handling the material or objects.
In mechanical training workshops, and other places where elms are used for handling or handling equipment

curing individual supports for platforms, in order to eliminate the handling costs resulting from stacking and unstacking a multiplicity of platforms to gain access to a specific platform.
Because of - the dimensions of the platforms and the weight of the objects or material carried by ". These, these structures or frames must be very large.

and capable of supporting extremely heavy loads. Such structures, or frames, are usually established with shelves and brackets permanently joined together, which, once installed, cannot be moved to another location. With permanent structures or frameworks for platforms, of this kind, it is common for a forklift truck used to transport platforms to have to be moved a great distance in order to transport the objects or material to a point or location. where machining operations or work must be carried out there.
In order to avoid the need for long-distance travel of a forklift truck, it was necessary to provide frames or support structures of the type defined at "strategic" points, which results in incomplete use of the frames or fixed structures and by occupying a large area of the workshop floor.
One of the main objects of the present invention is to provide shelving for storing loaded platforms, in which the individual parts or members can be easily separated and reassembled when necessary. For this purpose the shelving comprises vertical supports on which shelves are removably mounted, in such a way that the shelves are used to fix the supports in their position.

The four-corner mounting structure of a shelf of the kind described comprises a metal plate having an opening in its end, through which the support hooks of a vertical post can be engaged by a horizontal displacement of the shelf. with respect to the uprights, so that the shelf can be brought into a suitable position to enable the support engagement with the four uprights to be made, by observing the position of the hooks of the front uprights with respect to the mounting openings of the anterior angles of the spokes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will emerge from the following description.

and
Figo 6 is an elevational view, on an enlarged scale, of a section of notched angle iron used in the manufacture of two mounting structures of the type shown in Fig. 4.
In the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 respectively denote a pair of vertically extending supports which are of identical construction. Each of the brackets 1 and 2 comprises a vertically extending front post, 3, and a vertically extending rear post, 4, the posts 3 and 4 being secured together, spaced apart, by sections of angle iron or tie rods. 5 and 6. Uprights 3 and 4 are U-profile sections with parallel flanges or flanges projecting forward, 7 and 8, which are notched at evenly spaced intervals to provide a longer length. multiplicity of equally spaced hooks facing upwards, 9.
For the purpose which will be described, the flanges or wings 8 of the rear uprights 4 are spaced apart by a greater distance than the flanges or flanges 7 of the front uprights 3.
The spokes are designated as a whole by the numeral 10 and are composed of front and rear parallel structural sections, II and 12, which are secured to each other, spaced apart, by parallel angle iron sections, 13 and 14. The ends of the sections 11 and 12 extending beyond the edges of the spoke, the front section 11 having an overall length greater than the spacing between adjacent flanges or flanges 7 of a pair of front posts 3, and the rear section 12 having a overall length greater than the spacing between adjacent flanges or flanges 8 of a pair of rear pillars 4.
In addition, the overall length of the rear section 12 of the spoke is less than the distance between adjacent flanges or flanges 7 of a pair of front uprights 3, so that the ends of the rear section 12 can remain clear of the uprights. forward 3 during the straight and horizontal movement towards the rear of the spoke 10, in a position suitable for enabling the support to be engaged on the hooks 9.
The supports 1 and 2 are secured in their spaced position by links or tie rods 15 extending between them and fixed to the webs of the rear U 4- 4 As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the spokes 10 may pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Referring first to the spokes designated by 10a, the front and rear structural sections 11 and 12 are U-shaped sections having a core 16 extending vertically. In the case of spoke 10a, each end of core 16 is provided with a T-shaped notch, 17, exhibiting semi-circular ends, 18 and 19, as best shown in FIG. 5.
The ends 18 and 19 are spaced from each other by a distance such that the hooks can be passed through the opening provided by the slot or notch 17 in the web 16 during the movement of the spoke, backwards, in a position suitable for allowing the support to be engaged on the hooks 9.
Upon movement of the spoke, rearwardly, into a position allowing support engagement as shown, web portions 20 and 21 form. mant the ends of notches 18 and 19 are engaged in adjacent notches 22 formed in the flanges or flange 7 or 8, as the case may be, with a support hook 9 between these notches, which projects through the opening 17. The shelf can then be lowered into support engagement on the hooks 9.
When it is thus lowered into support engagement, the hollow of the end 18 of the notch engages the semi-circular hollow 23a of the hook 9 to effect interlocking therewith, which rigidly retains the spoke. against lateral displacement relative to the upright, and secures the uprights against forward or backward displacement relative to the spoke, the interlocking being formed by the metal of the core 16 and flanges or flanges 7 and 8, extending perpendicular to each other and mutually intersecting.
The assembly of spoke 10a to supports 1 and 2 can be effected by moving the spoke while it is supported on the arms of a fork lift o Due to the fact that the overall length of section 12 is less that the distance between adjacent flanges or flanges 7 of the front uprights 3, the spoke can be moved directly rearward into a position suitable for allowing the engagement of support on the rear uprights 4 without interference with the front uprights 3. This rearward displacement of the spoke is effected by moving the forklift forward while the spoke 10 is supported on the arms of this elevator.
After moving the rear section 12 to the rear of the rack, to a position clear of the front uprights 3, the forklift operator does not need to pay any additional attention to the rear section 12 of the rack. It suffices for him to manipulate the spoke until the notches 17 located at the ends of the front section 11 are brought into a position such that selected hooks 9 of the front uprights 3 project through these notches. When one sees hooks 9 of the front uprights 3 passing through the notch openings 17 of the ends of the front section 11 of the spoke, a pair of hooks 9, arranged similarly on the rear uprights 4, will enter the notch openings 17 at the ends of the rear section 12.
The horizontal movement of the spoke in a position suitable for enabling the support to be engaged on hooks 9 at each of its four angles is thus effected by the operator while he observes only the front section 11 radius.
Radius 10c is identical to spoke 10a, except that section 16 has an angle bar 16a attached to its lower side. The angle section 16a has, as best shown in Figure 5, a notch 17a similar to the upper half of the notch 17. The notch 17a has parts 18a 'and 20a similar to the parts 18 and 20, with a view to a support engagement on a second hook 9, the notch ends 18 and 18a being spaced apart by a distance equal to the vertical spacing of adjacent hooks 9.
Angle section 16a allows spoke 10c to be supported by adjacent pairs of vertically spaced hooks 9 from each of posts 3 and 4, thereby providing a stiffer and stronger shelving assembly.
The lower section 16a can be obtained by cutting longitudinally and in the middle a U-shaped section 16, thereby forming two angles 16a. In the preferred practice of the invention, however, to form the lower section 16a a Lo-channel is used instead of forming the notches 17 and 17a.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in the ends of U-sections, 16, the notches 17 and 17a can be established in a section of angle iron 23 as illustrated in figure 4, and in the manner shown for the radius 10b of figs 1 and 3.
In this case, the ends of the U-sections, 16, are cut and the angle iron sections 23, with notches 17 and 17a formed therein, are welded to the ends of the U-section, each of the sections 11 and 12 being formed in such a case of a U-shaped section, 16, and of an angle iron section 23 welded to each end of this section. The method of manufacturing the end angle iron sections 23 provided with the notches 17 and 17a will be best understood by reference in FIG. 6, in which the reference 24 designates a section of angle iron comprising flanges or flanges 25 and 26 arranged perpendicular to each other. The flange or flange 25 is punched to form two T-notches, 17, and one in - middle check mark in T, 26.
The portion of the angle iron section 24 which is located between the dotted lines 28 and 29 is then removed to divide the section 24 into two end pieces 23, respectively having a T-notch, 17, and a lower notch 17a. In this way, a corner section 24 will serve to form the structures of the end mounts 23 intended for each end of a U-section, 16, as illustrated in figure 4 and shown in relation to spoke 10b in figures. 1 and 3,
It emerges from the above that the spokes 10, when constructed as described above, will serve to reinforce the uprights against displacement with respect to the spoke.
Further, the assembly of the spokes 10 to the support posts is accomplished very easily while the spokes are supported on the arms of a fork lift. The horizontal movement of the spokes in a position suitable for allowing a support engagement on selected hooks 9 is achieved without displacement of the spoke 10 out of a horizontal plane. It should also be noted that the final movement of the spoke to come to occupy its supported position, interlocking with the uprights 3 and 4, is obtained by simply lowering the spoke in a vertical direction.
The disassembly of the shelf can be quickly or easily done by reverse movements, vertical and horizontal.
It should also be noted that by carrying out the assembly, and the disassembly of the spoke on the uprights 3 and 4, the operator of the forklift carrying the spoke must observe only the relative movement of the hooks 9 with respect to to the openings of the notches 17 located at the ends of the front section 11 of the spoke.
Although various specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, it should be understood that this is for illustration only, and that various modifications and changes could be made within the limits of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
