<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
<tb> Carbone <SEP> 89,75 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Hydrogène <SEP> 0,96 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Azote <SEP> 0,19 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlore <SEP> 0,52 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Oxygène <SEP> 7,5 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> la <SEP> différence
<tb>
<tb> Cendres <SEP> 1,08 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
EMI2.2
<tb> Carbone <SEP> 80,70 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Eau <SEP> 0,35 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Azote <SEP> 0,29 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlore <SEP> 17,2 <SEP> %
<tb> Oxygène <SEP> 1,46 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> la <SEP> différence
<tb>
EMI2.3
<tb> Carbone <SEP> 86,5 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
<tb> Hydrogène <SEP> 0,42 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Azote <SEP> 6,70 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlore <SEP> 1,03 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Oxygène <SEP> 2,05 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> la <SEP> différence
<tb>
<tb> Cendres <SEP> 3,30 <SEP> % <SEP> .
<tb>

PROCESS FOR PREPARING DERIVATIVES OF BLACK SMOKE.
By treating carbon blacks with chlorine, halogenated carbon blacks can be obtained. It has been observed that products with very variable chlorine contents have been obtained, depending on the type of carbon black used. Thus, for example, during the chlorination of a gas lamp black, or a light flame lamp black, a product was obtained containing 18 - 20% chloride, while lamp black A heavy flame results in a product containing a maximum of 8% chlorine.
It has been found that these halogenated carbon blacks can be employed with advantage for the preparation of various carbon black derivatives.
Usually the halogen is substituted for the desired derivative by double replacement; for example, when heating halogenated carbon black with sodium cyanide, a carbon black derivative containing CN is obtained. Likewise, it is possible, by treatment with inorganic bases, for example sodium hydroxide solution or alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides, to obtain carbon blacks with hydroxyl radicals. The corresponding derivatives containing sulfur or selenium can be obtained in an analogous manner, with an alkaline sulfur compound or sodium selenide.
When halogenated carbon blacks are treated with ammonia, carbon black derivatives containing NH2 are obtained. It is also possible to have recourse to amines, such as methylamine, and to compounds of the silane group, for example of the formula R SiHNH for the preparation of the corresponding carbon black derivatives.
Other halogenated carbon black treatments can also be carried out with the most diverse organic combinations, for example sodium ethoxide, sodium phenolate; sodium rhodanide, potassium cyanate, etc.

In order to carry out the reaction, an increase in temperature is generally necessary. It has been found to be particularly advantageous to carry out the treatment without solvents, that is to say by dry heating.
Processing in rotating tubes or mixing screws is suitable for this. However, in suitable cases it is readily possible to employ solvents of an inorganic or organic nature in the processing. When the carbon black is to be treated with highly volatile compounds, these can be passed in the form of a vapor stream over the carbon black to be treated. If a temperature below the boiling point of the compound in question is then applied, it is necessary to employ an inert carrier gas for the vapors, for example nitrogen, or to work under vacuum.
For the preparation of pure resulting products it is generally necessary to subject the reaction product to extraction, in order to remove the halogenated compounds formed, for example cooking salt, calcium chloride, etc.
EXAMPLES.-
1.- German gas carbon black is treated to exhaustion with chlorine at a temperature of 300 without the addition of any catalyst, and one obtains, accompanied by an escape of acid hydrochloric acid, a carbon black with a chlorine content of 17%.
For a part of this halogenated carbon black we take 0.41 part of caustic soda free of water, we mix thoroughly and heat with exclusion of air, for a short time at 330. The reaction product is leached with water, washed with hydrochloric acid and dried.
We obtain 0.92 parts of carbon black, the following elemental analysis of which gives the composition:
EMI2.1
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 89.75 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Hydrogen <SEP> 0.96 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Nitrogen <SEP> 0.19 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlorine <SEP> 0.52 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Oxygen <SEP> 7.5 <SEP>% <SEP> of <SEP> the <SEP> difference
<tb>
<tb> Ashes <SEP> 1.08 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
On the other hand, the starting halogenated carbon black had, according to elementary analysis, the following composition
EMI2.2
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 80.70 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Water <SEP> 0.35 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Nitrogen <SEP> 0.29 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlorine <SEP> 17.2 <SEP>%
<tb> Oxygen <SEP> 1.46 <SEP>% <SEP> of <SEP> the <SEP> difference
<tb>
It results from the analyzes that the halogen contained in the halogenated carbon black has been replaced,
apart from a tiny residue, by OH groups.
2.- For one part of chlorinated smoke black, prepared in the same manner as that described in Example 1, 0.3 parts of sodiam cyanide are taken with an NaCN content of 97%. After mixing well, the mixture is heated for one hour at 5750. The reaction product is leached with water and dilute hydrochloric acid, and after drying has, according to elemental analysis, the following composition:
EMI2.3
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 86.5 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
<tb> Hydrogen <SEP> 0.42 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Nitrogen <SEP> 6.70 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Chlorine <SEP> 1.03 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Oxygen <SEP> 2.05 <SEP>% <SEP> of <SEP> the <SEP> difference
<tb>
<tb> Ash <SEP> 3.30 <SEP>% <SEP>.
<tb>
The analysis showed that the chlorine was replaced to a large extent by the group ON.
The process according to the invention was by no means foreseeable from the present state of the art, since carbon black was considered to be a relatively chemically inert substance composed of almost pure carbon. As a result of the findings, it is now possible to prepare the most diverse carbon black derivatives and thus to impart new properties to the carbon black and to find corresponding application possibilities, for example in the field of synthetic materials, varnishes, rubber, silicones, printing colors, etc.
