  PERCOLATEUR.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  PERCOLATOR.

     The invention relates to percolators in which the water introduced into a tank is heated to the boiling temperature and is discharged by the vapor pressure generated, passing through a rising tube closed at its upper part and a flow tube surrounded by the rising tube, through the material to be scalded or scalded, that is to say to be exhausted with boiling water, located in a scalding funnel or filter placed under the tubes, after which, towards the end of the scalding. steam flows through the material to be scalded to exhaust it thoroughly.

   In these known percolators operating according to the siphon principle, each time only the quantity of water necessary for carrying out scalding, that is to say for exhaustion, is introduced into the tank. scalding material or ground coffee placed in the scalding funnel. It is therefore not possible to heat the water beforehand in the full tank and then quickly prepare a small quantity of liquid coffee or coffee brew, because the heated water must, when not needed, for example, that from a single cup of coffee, to be removed again for the most part. In addition, the decoction can also not be interrupted if, during the period of temperature rise, another kind of coffee brew, for example, mocha, is ordered.

   According to the invention, the aforementioned drawbacks are eliminated by virtue of the fact that, in the flow tube or in the supply pipe to the material to be scalded, a stop member is mounted which makes it possible to 'interrupt the flow of water produced by the pressure of the steam at will.

   In order to ensure that in this case, when the flow of water is interrupted in order to terminate the scalding in progress, a certain quantity of steam can be conducted through the material to be scalded, there is provided at the upper end of the riser tube or near the latter, an opening for the passage of steam, and the stopper is provided, in-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 outside the water flow opening, a steam passage opening, of a relatively small width or diameter, the diameter of this opening being smaller than that of the upper opening of the ascending tube. By placing the stopper in a suitable position, it is therefore possible to obtain that, towards the end of the scalding, steam passes through the material to be scalded.

   The attached sheet of drawings shows, by way of example, an embodiment of a percolator produced according to the invention.

   Figure 1 of these drawings is a longitudinal section through the percolator.

   Figure 2 is a section, shown on a larger scale, through the lower part of the percolator with the stopper incorporated.

   Figures 3, 4 and 5 are cross sections through the stopper in different operating positions.

   On the drawing board, 1 is a receptacle or reservoir which is closed at its upper part by a cover 2 and which contains, near its bottom or lower part, a filling opening capable of being connected to a water pipe. In a central opening in the bottom of the reservoir is inserted a sleeve 3 having an axial channel.

  In the enlarged upper part of the axial channel is fixed the lower end of a flow tube 4, which extends upwards. In addition, in the 'reservoir 1, there is provided a float 5 which carries a tube 6, closed at its upper end, surrounding the flow tube 4 and having, at the bottom, a side opening 7. On the cover 2 , is placed a closing cap 8 with an air release valve 9, which is made in such a way that it closes automatically when a vapor pressure builds up in the tank 1. At the lower part of the latter, a scalding funnel 10, with a scalding screen or filter 11 receiving the material to be scalded or ground coffee, is mounted so that it can be easily removed.

   Immediately above the bottom of the tank 1 is an electric heating device 12, in the current supply line or conductor of which is a mercury toggle switch 13 which is controlled by the float 5 of such. so that when the float is raised by the water entering the tank 1 it is closed and, on the contrary, when the tank 1 is emptied, it is opened by the float which descends. The heating device 12 serving to heat the water to the boiling temperature is therefore only switched on during the time during which the tank 1 is fully or partially filled with water and it produces rapid heating of water to the boiling point.

   As soon as, after the automatic closing of the valve 9, a certain vapor pressure, which can rise for example to an effective atmosphere, has established in the receptacle, the boiling water is discharged, through the opening 7, in the ascending tube 6 and, through the flow tube 4, in the material to be scalded located in the funnel 10.

   In the path of the water flow, there is provided according to the invention a shut-off valve or a shut-off valve 14, which in the example shown has its seat in a form. or transverse channel of the socket 3 and carries, at the outer end of its rod 15, a handle 16. The tap 14 has a passage opening 17 for boiling water and an opening 18, forming an angle with the first and of appreciably smaller diameter, for the passage of steam. Just below the closed upper end of the riser tube 6 is a side opening 19, the diameter of which is somewhat larger than the diameter of the vapor passage opening of the valve. stop 14.

   When the tap 14 is in the position of FIG. 3, the water which, by the pressure of the steam located above the water level, is discharged into the flow tube 4, is conducted without obstacle

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 through the opening 17 to the material to be scalded located in the funnel 10.

   By placing the stopcock 14 in the position of figure 5, it is possible to end the scalding at any time desired regardless of the amount of water in the container 1. Before that the valve 14 is put in the stop position, it is however first put for a certain time in the position of FIG. 4, in which the narrow passage opening 18 is on the path of the flow.

   When the valve 14 is in this position, it is established, under the influence of the steam passing through the upper opening 19 of the rising tube and as a result of the resistance due to the small diameter of the opening 18 of the valve, a certain pressure in the flow tube 4, which has the consequence that the vapor pressure prevailing in the tank 1 is not able to force the water in the riser tube 6 upwards to the The upper end of the flow tube 4. Consequently, steam passes through the opening 18 of the valve and reaches the material to be scalded, which thereby is exhausted thoroughly.

   As emerges from the foregoing description, the invention makes it possible to end scalding at any time, regardless of the content of the water tank, or to measure the quantity of material to be scalded used. for each scalding as needed in each case, while in addition the advantageous possibility of discharging steam through the material to be scalded towards the end of each scalding remains maintained. Naturally, the invention is not limited by the details to the exemplary embodiment shown, but on the contrary it is possible, for example, as regards the position and the shape given to the stop member. , various constructive modifications within the scope of the claimed protection.
