<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS IN BIPLEX AND MULTIPLEX LAMINATION PROCESSES.
The invention relates to the technique of laminating in general and more especially of biplex and multiplex laminating with a view to producing materials more especially intended for the packaging field.
It is known that, moreover, in addition, use is made of sheets or strips of paper secured by an appropriate adhesive to one or more other sheets or strips in order to achieve qualities meeting the requirements of the applications envisaged. This is particularly the case for the execution of packaging impermeable to water, impermeable to grease, impermeable to air or to packaging which must withstand special products or special climatic conditions, in particular for shipments to countries. tropical
However, lamination raises very special problems, because if joining two sheets or strips of paper by means of an adhesive constitutes a simple operation and even banal in itself,
carrying out such a lamination ensured of a constancy of characteristics under all the conditions encountered by the packaging is appreciably more complex.
However, the quantity and variety of goods packaged and sent to tropical regions or capable of being stored for relatively long periods of time in essentially variable climatic conditions are increasing in number.
As a result, the laminated materials must be packaged in a very special way, taking into account the nature of the juxtaposed sheets or strips, the climatic conditions in which the packaging must stay and the chemical characteristics of the materials to be packaged.
In general, the Applicant has observed that the most serious defects in the lamination come from the harmful conditions in which the adhesive was treated in the presence of the hygroscopic medium constituted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by the material to be coated, the aqueous medium content of which is always substantially lower than that of the adhesive. However, the surface tensions which develop or which are constrained when the adhesive is not applied are determinant of the subsequent disturbances in the behavior of the adhesive itself under the effect of variations in the physicochemical conditions of the atmosphere. ambient.
In fact, the behavior of the adhesive with respect to the coated material is such that first of all the latter strongly sucks the aqueous medium of the adhesive so as to produce a thickening of the latter favorable to rapid setting. However, this freezing is not constant over the entire thickness of the adhesive layer, from which it results, despite an apparent energetic connection between the superposed sheets or strips, a real interposition of a practically non-adhesive foreign body. but capable of reacting under variations in ambient climatic conditions.
It is thus obtained that, despite an apparently energetic adhesion on leaving the laminator, the product is in a permanent unstable equilibrium and unsuitable for ensuring packaging, respectively adequate conservation of the goods. Considerable sums have been lost due to this defect, which is always detected late and very often results in the destruction of the packaged goods.
According to the invention, these drawbacks are eliminated by carrying out the gluing under special conditions such as, while giving the adhesive the freedom to partially or completely abandon its aqueous medium to the support which it covers, the actual joining. between the superimposed sheets or strips is only carried out subsequently under conditions such as said adhesive, when the mechanical force necessary to express the occluded air is applied is maintained in a physical state such that its plasticity is practically constant throughout its mass and that at the time of the actual bonding, said adhesive is in a practically homogeneous form in order to polymerize in a progressive and constant manner at all its points.
In this way, practically unalterable laminates were obtained, the laminated complex behaving more or less like a simple strip or sheet, but the chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of which would be those of the complex.
The process of the invention therefore consists substantially from a strip, generally ex-reel, one face of which is coated with one of the traditional adhesives in lamination material, for example microcrystalline paraffin. This application is carried out by known means but under conditions such that the layer is as regular as possible and that the part of the adhesive in contact with the sheet, leaving its aqueous medium to the latter, freezes almost instantly, which is necessary to prevent true foliage of fat between the fibrous texture of the sheet, which, on the other hand, could be detrimental to the subsequent appearance of the sheet or web.
The adhesive thus fixed in its film layer in contact with the strip or sheet is then treated so as to allow the entire adhesive layer to lose a sufficient quantity of its aqueous medium such that said creep should no longer be feared. even through the film layer directly with the support in the form of sheet or strip.
This first phase of the process has the effect of systematically preventing the production of the joining between the elements participating in the lamination before the adhesive has been fixed, said freezing being such as it occurs before the creep of the adhesive or part of the adhesive between the fibrous texture of the underlying backing.
The second phase of the process consists in bringing the surface thus treated and having a practically neutralized adhesive in contact with a second element of the lamination, for example a strip or sheet, the adjacent face of which will have or not been treated as it has just been. described for the first element of the complex.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
These two strips or sheets thus juxtaposed in a state peremptory to the joining proper undergo a first rolling effect with a view to extracting the greatest possible part of the occluded air and to bring the relatively plastic adhesive layer in. a distribution which is also as regular as possible in terms of surface and thickness.
These conditions, while appearing to be incidental, are essential and the Applicant has observed that certain negligence traditionally applied under these conditions made the over-bonded complexes not very homogeneous and unsuitable for offering, in all their points, an equal reaction to climatic variations in temperature. Ambiant air.
Finally, the third phase of the process consists in subjecting the complex thus conditioned both to a mechanical force of normal pressure to the two exterior planes of the complex and to regular plasticization of the ad. hesitant by adding sufficient calories to ensure a certain approximation of the juxtaposed sheets or strips subsequent to partial penetration of the adhesive into the fibrous texture or other of said sheets or strips thus juxtaposed.
Finally, the bonded complex is maintained, for a certain time, under a regular tension force in order to avoid as much as possible the local deformations of the sheets or bands as a result of the contractions due to evaporation, that is to say the 'evacuation of excess aqueous medium relative to the humidity of the ambient air.
By this process, which only comprises simple phases but each of which must necessarily be ensured of very great precision and practically total consistency, we obtain laminates which are excessively stable and which may include juxtapositions. essentially different materials and, in particular, papers of different grammage, papers containing mutually neutral but also very different fillers, fibrous materials jutaposed with sheets of metal, in particular aluminum, strips or sheets of paper juxtaposed with strips of textile material, etc.
The process conditions are applicable practically independently of the constituents of the bonded complex but, in certain cases, it will be necessary to juxtapose with the process conditions additional phases which it is superfluous to mention because they can be pulsed as such. in the usual bonding processes for materials considered in processing industries.
The method, object of the invention, can be applied on various machines but without requiring special equipment, which certainly constitutes an appreciable advantage for its benefit. In some cases, traditional laminators can be adapted as long as the spacing between certain calendars is sufficient.
In addition, the machines will be adapted according to the number of superimposed elements constituting the bonded complex.
By way of indication, without restriction of any kind, embodiments are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 very schematically represent the main part of a gluing machine packaged to apply the coating. method of the invention for the manufacture of biplex; FIG. 3 very schematically represents the main part of a gluing machine packaged to apply the method of the invention for the manufacture of triplexes.
In Figure 1, the main part of the gluing machine packaged to apply the method of the invention consists substantially of a glue roll 1, tension rollers 2-3-4, a pressure roll 5, a new tension roll 6, a roller-heater 2 and all the accessories (not shown) serving to support these rollers. A sheet A of paper, for example, must be overglued on a second sheet B also of paper
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in paper, for example. The sheet A is brought into contact with the glue roller 1 so as to coat one of its faces with an adhesive formed, for example, of paraffin. This strip is stretched over rolls 2-3-4, which are conditioned and spaced in such a way that the adhesive sets without creeping through the fibrous texture of said strip A.
In addition, arrived at the line of tangency between the rollers 4-5, the adhesive applied to the strip A is practically fixed or, in any case, in a plastic state such that there is practically no absorption any more. aqueous medium by said band A.
The face of the strip B coming into contact with the adhesive carried by the strip A is, in this case, blank. By the action of rollers 4-5-6, the two sections of the juxtaposed bands A-B are subjected to normal pressure resulting in the practically total exclusion of the air which could be occluded between these sections. Then, the adhesive is quickly plasticized, while tightening subjected to a regular clamping force by radial pressure on the heating drum 7. The bands thus secured are then kept under tension but gradually brought back to room temperature by horny means.
In the example of figure 2, we find the glue drum 1, tension rollers 2-4, a pressure roller 5, but the heating system per single drum is replaced by a set of rollers 8-9-10 , arranged slightly staggered downstream of the tensioning roller 6. The process takes place there as explained for the execution of FIG. 1.
We find practically the same elements in the execution of FIG. 3, because it is a characteristic of the process that it can be repeated practically an indeterminate number of times, one of the bands of the overgluing itself being able to be overglued. . In fact, in said FIG. 3, there is the juxtaposition of two executions exactly in accordance with that of FIG. 1. In fact, a first gluing is carried out between the strip A and the strip B. Then, the over glued A + B is laminated with a third strip C by the same process which was used for the laminating of the strip A + B.
We could thus repeat the process marl and produce against collages in multiplex of any kind. Obviously, these means are given only by way of example and we can, in many cases even, adapt the name. many known laminators.
It is also interesting to note that, if we have given as an example, of adhesive, paraffin, the process is in no way related to this adhesive but that it is applicable for any kind of adhesive, however that it is more easily adaptable to thermoplastic adhesives, owing to the ease with which it is possible to determine the zones of plasticization and of solidification of the layers of said adhesive.
CLAIMS.
1. - Process for lamination, generally using a thermoplastic adhesive and ex-coil tapes ;, characterized in that the adhesive applied to one face of one of the tapes is frozen before creeping into the fibrous texture of said strip, then the face thus coated is juxtaposed to a second strip, similarly treated or not; the two supports thus juxtaposed are subjected to a mechanical force determining a sufficient tension for the expulsion of the occluded air and, finally, the supports thus juxtaposed and prepared are subjected to a pressure force concomitantly with a rise in temperature so as to appropriately plasticize the adhesive and thus produce the lamination of said supports.
