 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO SUPPORT DEVICES ACTIVATED BY A MOTOR FLUID AND INTENDED FOR MINING AND SIMILAR APPLICATIONS.

   The present invention relates to propping devices actuated by a motive fluid and intended for mines and similar applications. Supporting devices have already been proposed comprising a support element actuated by a working fluid, as well as an element actuated by a working fluid and acting in a direction transverse to that of the support element, the arrangement being such that when the latter element is used as a fulcrum., the transverse element may be caused to move forward or backward, with respect to this fulcrum, an object attached to said transverse element., or else, when the transverse element is attached to another fulcrum while the supporting element is clear of the roof,

   said transverse element may be caused to move the latter support element forward or backward,
The object of the present invention is to establish an improved support apparatus; this apparatus comprising means by means of which it can be advanced step by step, while providing continuous support to the roof which is located above it.

   According to the present invention, there is provided a support device for mines or similar operations, this device comprising two supporting cylinders with working fluid and a double-acting working fluid cylinder, which forms a connecting element between the first two cylinders, the cylinders of the support cylinders being in communication, respectively, with the two opposite faces of the piston of the cylinder of the double-acting cylinder.

  Each of the support cylinders can be used in turn as a fulcrum for the connection cylinder, so that the other support cylinder can be advanced by the connection cylinder to a new position; however, the effective surfaces of the pistons of the two support cylinders and of the double-acting piston of the link cylinder, as well as the pipes between the cylinders of these jacks, are such that the thrust exerted by the link cylinder cannot under any circumstances of-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 pass the vertical thrust of the support cylinder which serves as the fulcrum. Consequently, any risk of accidental slippage of the jack serving as a fulcrum is eliminated while the roof is supported continuously.

   Preferably, the support cylinders operate in a telescopic fashion, the support cylinder heads of each apparatus being provided with self-adjusting extension members which act together to provide continuous protection from a point forward of the device. the device to a point at the rear of it.

   The devices according to the present invention have been established so as to be able to be operated in a battery, these devices being for example arranged in a row parallel to the felling front, so as to support the roof of the vein during the operation of a shearer. or similar slaughtering machine. The devices forming part of the battery are designed to operate individually or simultaneously, so that they can be advanced step by step as the working face is stripped, while the roof located behind the devices is struck down. The lines established throughout the battery of devices are such that any additional pressure exerted on the support cylinder of any device is automatically distributed throughout the battery.

   The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, a mode of construction of a support apparatus according to the present invention.

   In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, the vertical jacks being shown in their withdrawn position.

   Fig. 2 is a plan view, taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1, the vertical jacks being omitted.

   Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line III-III of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 2.

   Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of neighboring devices forming part of a battery.

   Fig. 6 is an elevational view, partly in section, taken at right angles to FIG. 1 and showing one of the telescopic jacks in the fully extended position, this jack being provided with an extension.

   The apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings comprises two vertical ram cylinders 11, 12, each mounted in a suitable frame member 13 or 14 and supported respectively on pads 15 and 16 which can be moved, by traction or by pushing, on the ground 17 of the mine. One end of the rod 18 of a double-acting horizontal cylinder piston is fixed by means of a ball joint 21, to one end of a tubular connecting member 20, the opposite end of which is attached with a Analogously, by means of a ball joint 21, to an extension 22 of said piston, the latter being rigidly fixed, at 23, to the front wall of the rear cylinder 12. The ball joints 19,

   21 provide an articulated connection between the piston rod 18 and its extension 22 and are engaged between the half-cups or coupling elements 24, clamped to each other by means of adjustable locking screws 25, as shown in Fig. 4. The cylinder 26 of the horizontal cylinder extends below the cylinder 11 of the front vertical cylinder, in the axial plane of this cylinder, and is rigidly fixed to the latter.

   The vertical pistons mounted in the cylinders 11 and 12 act jointly by telescoping with respect to each other, each cylinder containing an internal piston 27 or 28 provided with an external shoulder at 29 or 30 and slidable in a cylinder formed in a pis-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 outer tone 31 or 32, provided in turn with an outer shoulder at 33 or 34, as well as with an inner flange at 35 or 36, the two pistons of each cylinder cylinder being provided with sealing packings 37. bare in the desired position using rings 38 fixed with locking screws 39.

   The arrangement is such that a pressurized fluid, which enters a vertical ram cylinder 11 or 12, acts simultaneously on the two pistons 27 and 31 or 28 and 32 contained in these cylinders, which initially results in simultaneous lifting. of the two pistons.

   The upward stroke of the outer piston 31 or 32 is limited by the coming into contact of its outer shoulder 33 or 34 with a nut 40 or 41 screwed into the cylinder head of the respective cylinder 11 or 12. The latter position is shown in FIG. 6. When the outer piston 31 or 32 has reached the limit of its upstroke, the rise of the inner piston 27 or 28 may continue until the latter is also stopped by the contact of its piston. outer shoulder 29 or 30 with the inner flange 35 or 36 formed on the upper edge of the cylinder formed by said outer piston.

   The pistons move together during the major part of their upstroke, the arrangement being such that the last part of the stroke, necessary in order to contact the roof and to exert pressure on it, is accomplished only by the piston 27 or 28, which continues its upward movement alone.

   The upper ends of the vertical pistons 27 and 31 or 28 and 32 are formed so as to present spherical surfaces 42 or 43, which engage in corresponding spherical cells 44 or 45, provided in the underside of an extension 46 or 47, which can thus adjust freely within certain limits with regard to its angular position relative to the vertical cylinder.

   A central bolt 48 or 49 is provided with a head 50 or 51 which engages in a recess 52 or 53 provided in said extension, and which has dimensions larger than said head, in order to ensure sufficient play for that. here, said bolt pointing downwardly, so as to penetrate into a central recess 54 or 55 made in the inner piston 27 or 28, so that the extension elements 46 and 47 are joined together in play at the anterior and posterior cylinders.

   As needed and as shown in Fig. 6 one or more cylinder extensions 56 may be interposed between the inner piston 27 or 28 and the extension element 46 or 47, the upper part of this extension being formed so as to present a spherical surface and a central recess intended to receive the bolt 48 or 49, this arrangement being similar to that adopted for the upper end of the inner piston 27 or 28, while the lower end of the lower part of said extension is surrounded by a collar 57 which has a concave shape so as to constitute a ball joint for the spherical surface 42 or 43 of the internal piston. Cylinder extensions are one way to increase the height of vertical cylinders.

   The anterior self-adjusting extension 46 has a rearwardly facing portion 58 having an inverted U-section, while the posterior self-adjusting extension member 47 has a forward facing hollow portion 59. A long forward-facing hinge bar 60 is pivotally mounted, at 61, in the inner part 59 of the posterior extension element, the free end of this bar penetrating playfully into the rear part 58 of the 'front extension element of the apparatus and serving to keep the two extension elements in alignment and to prevent their relative lateral movements.

  The parts 58 and 59 of the extension elements, as well as the bar 60, constitute a support of great extension for the roof and a protection without solution of continuity, against the fall of stones, for the miners working near the front jacks. and later, this not only when the device is immobilized, but also during the movement of one of the vertical cylinders.

   The outer face of the cylinder 26 of the horizontal cylinder has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 a conical shape at the rear end of this cylinder close to the anterior articulation ball 19, this taper having the aim of removing obstacles, this piston being provided with a stuffing gland 63 for its rod 18, which ends with said ball joint. The anterior end 64 of the horizontal cylinder 26 is provided with an orifice 65, to which is connected a pipe 66 supplied, through a check valve 67, from a fluid supply tube 68. From port 65, pipe 66 establishes the return path to line 68, passing through pressure relief valve 69.

   The piston 70 of the horizontal cylinder is double-acting, this piston being provided with a pair of opposed packing glands 71, 72, its effective surface area being, however, notably smaller than that of the pistons 27, 31 and 28, 32 of the support cylinders . The piston rod 18 is provided with a central passage 73 which extends from one end of this rod to the other and which is in communication by means of a flexible tube 74 which extends in the 'inside the connecting element 20, with a central passage 75 provided in the extension 22 of the piston 18, the rear end of the latter passage being in communication with the space 76 provided in the cylinder 12 below the pistons 28 , 32 of the rear cylinder.

   Consequently, an admission of pressurized fluid to the tube 66 results in a simultaneous arrival of this fluid in the space 77 situated in front of the piston 70, as well as its admission, through the passages 73, 75 and the tube 74 , in the space 76 of the cylinder 12 of the rear cylinder.

   A second pressurized fluid inlet tube 78 is in communication, via a shut-off valve 79, a tube 80 and an orifice 81 provided in the lower part of the wall of the cylinder 11. of the front cylinder, with the space 82 located below the pistons 27, 31, while an orifice 83, made in this wall opposite, of the first is in communication, via a tube 84 and a pressure relief valve 85, with pipe 78, thereby closing a return path.

  An orifice 86 and a passage 87, provided in the wall of the horizontal cylinder 26, lead to the space 88 located in the posterior part of the piston 70 of this cylinder. Consequently, an inflow of working fluid at the pipe 78 results in a simultaneous inflow of this fluid into the spaces 82 and 88 of the cylinders II and 26, respectively. The rear end 62 of the cylinder 26 cooperates with an adjustable stop 89 provided on the piston rod 18, with a view to limiting the forward stroke of the cylinder relative to said rod.

   The front end 64 of the horizontal cylinder 26 is provided at the front with an eye 90 to which a horizontal faceplate 91 of a pad 92 is attached by means of a coupling pin 93. The pad is attached. extends transversely in front of the apparatus and constitutes a protection for the pipes 68 of the pressurized fluid inlet and their connections.

   In Fig. 1, the anterior and posterior pistons are shown in their lowered positions. When the pressurized fluid coming from the pipes 78 and 68 is admitted into the spaces 82 and 76 located below the vertical pistons 27, 31 and 28, 32, a simultaneous upward movement of these pistons results, until the pistons external 31, 32 have reached the highest point of their stroke and are stopped by the fact that their shoulders 33, 34 come into contact with the nuts 40, 41, after which the internal pistons 27, 28 alone continue to rise , this until the extension elements 46, 47 come into contact with the roof of the building site and exert a pressure thereon which ensures the support thereof.

   The roof support thus produced by the extensions is not rigid, but is capable of deforming to a certain extent under excessive pressure. A regulating valve (not shown), provided on the pipe which supplies pressurized fluid lines 78 and 68, is designed for a predetermined maximum pressure of 3000 lbs per square inch (210.9 kg / cm2 ), the arrangement being such that when the roof pressure exceeds this maximum figure, the inner pistons 27, 28 will be forced downwards under the con-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 throle of said valve, until the recess 44 or 45 of the extension element also comes into contact with the outer piston 31 or 32, which has the effect of relieving the apparatus from the excessive pressure.

   Fig. 1 also shows the anterior and posterior vertical jacks, in their position of minimum separation. When the appliance is in service, the rear cylinder is moved away from the front cylinder by an additional distance slightly less than the value of the space.
88 located in the horizontal cylinder. When it comes to advancing the rear vertical cylinder to the position shown in FIG. 1, in order to prepare the forward movement of the front vertical cylinder, the pressure of the extension element 46 of the front cylinder is maintained against the roof, so that this cylinder can be used to immobilize the cylinder. 26 of the horizontal cylinder against any displacement.

   The pressure exerted on the inner piston 28 (or if necessary on the two pistons 28 and 32) of the rear cylinder can be reduced by an amount sufficient to free the rear extension element 47 from the roof, which is achieved by reducing the pressure of the fluid in the space 76 of the vertical cylinder 12, so that this fluid escapes to the supply line 68 through the passages 75, 74, 73, the port 65, the line 66 and the decompression valve 69.

   The quantity of pressurized fluid which flows from the line 78 to the spaces 82 and 88 of the anterior vertical cylinder and the horizontal cylinder respectively, increases and, as the pressure acting on the posterior face of the piston 70 exceeds that which acts on the anterior face of this piston, the piston rod 18 moves forward and drives the rear cylinder, while the articulation coupling 19, 20 21 allows the latter cylinder to follow the unevenness of the mine floor . The relative positions of the anterior and posterior cylinders are at this time those shown in FIG. 1.

   However, preferably, the pressure exerted by the posterior extension element 47 on the roof is maintained throughout the duration of the displacement of the posterior vertical cylinder, so that the support offered by the apparatus according to the invention acts to continuously, the pressure exerted on the rear face of the piston 70 being sufficient to drive the rear cylinder forward despite the resistance opposed by the roof and the ground of the mine to the advancement of the extension 47 and the pad 16, respectively.

   The pressure of the posterior extension element 47 against the roof is thus increased by admitting pressurized fluid from the line 68, through the stop valve 67, into the space 76 located below the pistons. rear 28 and 32, until the rear cylinder is able to serve as a fulcrum. The anterior ram can then be lowered by an amount sufficient to disengage the anterior extension element 46 from the roof, by discharging pressurized fluid from spaces 82 and 88 via port 83 and the relief valve. decompression 85; however, preferably the pressure of the front extension piece 46, which is exerted on the roof, is maintained to provide continuous support to the roof.

   The influx of an additional quantity of pressurized fluid from the line 66 to the space 77 situated in front of the double-acting piston 70 contained in the horizontal cylinder 26 has the effect of making this cylinder advance with respect to the rod. fixed piston 18, which cylinder drives with it the front cylinder 11 and the extension element 46, to bring them to the new forward position this notwithstanding the resistance offered by the roof and the ground to the element: and pad 15, respectively. In the following, the inner cylinder can be used again in order to immobilize the horizontal cylinder 24 against any displacement, while the rear cylinder is drawn forward.

   The forward reciprocating movements of the anterior and posterior cylinders continue at required intervals, a suitable advancement distance being, for example, six to twelve inches (15.24 to 30.48 cm). Note that the additional pressure required to advance the posterior cylinder has the effect of increasing the pressure exerted by the anterior extension member against the roof and, reversing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 The additional pressure required to advance the anterior ram increases the pressure with which the posterior extension element acts against the roof,

   the pressurized fluid acting on the anterior and posterior faces of the double-acting piston 70 of the horizontal cylinder being brought to pass through the space 76 or 82 situated below the pistons of the posterior or anterior cylinder used temporarily as a fulcrum.

  Consequently, the jack serving as a fulcrum does not run the risk of accidentally slipping.

   Fig. 5 shows two neighboring devices forming part of a battery which may include any suitable number of devices for example, in a vein 2 feet (60.96 cm) thick, the devices may be arranged with a spacing of four feet (121.92 cm) in a row parallel to the waist front. The battery devices can be actuated individually by appropriate manipulation of their shut-off valves 67 and 69, or they can be actuated simultaneously by manipulating a control valve (not shown) provided in the pipeline which feeds them. pipes 78 and 68 in pressurized fluid.

   The pads 92 of neighboring devices are coupled with the aid of an intermediate pad bar 94, articulated by each of its sides to vertical pegs 95, carried by the pads 92. The elements 96 which carry the yokes d The articulation and which feels mounted on the intermediate skate bar are supported by horizontal guides 97, in which they slide. This arrangement allows a certain freedom of relative movement between the intermediate bars 94 when the front cylinders of the battery are moved forward and allows one of the devices to move forward without being deviated from its path by a stationary neighboring device.

   The flexible pipes 98, 99, provided between the pressurized fluid supply pipes 68 and 78 of neighboring apparatuses pass through a chamber provided behind the face plate of the intermediate skate bar 94. Like the fluid supply pipes under pressure from all the jacks of the various devices communicate with each other, any additional pressure exerted on the supporting jacks of any device, as a result of movement of the roof, is automatically distributed throughout the battery.

   It follows from the above that the present invention makes it possible to establish a support device for mines, actuated by a motive fluid, device which can be moved forward step by step as part of a battery of identical devices. , and that the use of a single battery of devices makes it possible to support the roof in an adequate and continuous manner, while notably improving the protection of minors employed on the site against falling rocks, In addition, as the devices supports are actuated by a pressurized fluid and can be advanced individually or simultaneously. Their use allows a significant saving in labor and time.
