LIGHTING INSTRUMENT FOR MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS OF THE MOUTH AND THROAT.
The illumination instruments known for medical examinations of the mouth and throat have above all the following disadvantages: The place to be illuminated in the back of the mouth receives only a very small part of the light emanating from the instrument ; the tongue of the person to be examined should be lowered with a special instrument (eg a spoon) to allow the doctor to see the parts of the back of the mouth to be visited.
The object of the present invention is a lighting instrument for medical examinations of the mouth and throat with a lamp casing containing a current source, an incandescent lamp, and a reflector insert. The instrument is characterized by a head piece attachable to the carcass, and by a light conductor with a free and curved tip, which is attachable to the head piece and which is developed as a tongue depressor. All in such a way that when the light conductor is introduced into the mouth of the person to be examined, the tongue of this person is lowered by the light conductor, the light produced by the lamp is launched by it. ci and by inserting a reflector to the light conductor to exit there.
The light conductor can be developed as a solid body, similar to a curved flat bar, consisting of a material which allows light to penetrate in the longitudinal direction.
Therefore the light rays entering at the low turned to the light source of this body are conducted as a result of total reflection in and along the light conductor to exit through the end or other intended place of this. driver. The light conductor can also be developed as a flat pipe, the outer shape of which corresponds to the aforementioned solid conductor. Thus the free end of the pipe can be closed in such a way that the cavity of the pipe can be filled with exactly chosen liquids which, for example, allow certain specific kinds of light to enter.

A practical example with a variant of the invention is illustrated by the drawing. I1 designates:
Fig. 1 the instrument in the longitudinal view and partly in the longitudinal section,
Figo 2 a view of the light conductor, seen in the direction of the line "A" in FIG. 1, and
Fig. 3 a sectional view of a variant of the construction example according to Figs 1 and 2.
According to the construction example (Figs. 1 and 2) a bar lamp frame 1 has a bottom part 2 at one end to be screwed on. A pressure spring 3 is attached to it and presses against a battery 4 An incandescent lamp 5 is provided at the other end of the carcass. This lamp can be switched on and off using a sliding switch 6 marked diagrammatically o A safety ring 7 mounted on this end of the frame is used as known to block or unblock switch 6. lamp 5 is started by inserting reflector 8 into a light conductor 9.
The latter is curved almost in the shape of an "S" to allow it to lower the tongue of the person to be examined. The light conductor is held firm by means of a guide sleeve 10 in a head piece 11, which can be screwed onto the head end of the carcass 1. The sleeve 10 is resiliently fixed in a ferrule. slotted 12. This ferrule grasps from behind and from the side of the lamp the inner edge of an annular disc 13 held in the head part II by means of a surrounding flange. The ferrule is fixed therein in a manner not described, for example by riveting.
The parts of the instrument, with the exception of the light conductor 9, can be made of metal or plastic. The light conductor is eg made of transparent, heat-resistant materials (synthetic glass, etc.) or translucent thermoplastic material. It receives the light at its end turned towards the lamp 5 and leads it along the striped lines a, b, c, d, towards its free end. Deflections from one direction of light rays to another, i.e. from a to b, from b to c, etc. result by total reflection from the separation surfaces of the light conductor.
By giving a desired shape to the free end of the light conductor, part of the light that it diffuses comes out laterally near the ray "e", while another part of the light emerges in the direction "f" at the end of the conductor. We could also reach the light outlet near point "g". Thus the light of the lamp 5, by giving a suitable shape to the light conductor, can be directed exactly to the place of the person to be examined, which one wishes to see by lowering the tongue. For advantage, the materials are chosen. conductor in such a way that they are resistant without alteration to the temperatures required for its sterilization.
According to the variant of FIG. 3 there is provided a light conductor 20 which in its outer form is more or less a copy of the light conductor 9 of FIG. 1. It is hollow and closed at its free end and is secured to the carcass in the same manner as described above. The light flowing at its end from the side of the lamp is carried into the cavity along the striped lines, a, b, c, d, towards the free end of the light conductor and is projected there according to the circumstances chosen at this point. end. The cavity of this light conductor 20 can be filled with a suitable liquid which allows certain specific kinds of light to enter.
The light conductor 9 resp. 20 should preferably be scratched at its tip in order to obtain more efficient light reflection. Likewise, it is advantageous to cover or varnish the light conductor with a corrosion-resistant protective material for external protection against corrosion and to avoid being feigned too quickly (feigned after baking for sterilization).
Apart from the advantage of being able to bring the light to the place
