 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    On obtient de très bons produits en ajoutant du H2SO ou, mieux de l'oléum à la boue acide. Les produits obtenus de cette manière ont de

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Exemple I. -

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

     Exemple   V

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Exemple VII.-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

A nouveau, 1,2% d'agent adsorbant suffit.

  La décoloration s'effectue pour 58%.

  Exemple XX.-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  Exemple XXIII. -

  PROCESS FOR PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF ADSORPTION AGENTS HAVING
ABILITIES TO PROMOTE FILTRATION.

   The present invention relates to the preparation and use of adsorption agents having abilities to facilitate filtration. As the raw material for the preparation, mainly an acid slurry is used.

     The expression "acid slurry" is to be understood in a very broad sense. By this is meant all the possible products obtained when refining organic liquids, such as petroleum and petroleum derivatives, gasoline obtained from cracking, kerozene, tar, benzene, vegetable and animal oils, etc., with sulfuric acid or oleum These acid sludges contain a high content of sulfuric acid.

   In general, this content varies between 10 and 90% depending on the product which has been refined. In principle, sulfuric acid can also be added to organic substances, for example asphalt, pitch, or pitch. Fossil carbonaceous material Sulfuric acid can also be added to an acidic slurry with too low a HSO content. . Likewise, sludges having different contents of sulfuric acid can be mixed, or the organic substances just mentioned and sulfuric acid can be added thereto. In general, it is desirable that the sulfuric acid content of the acid slurry used with the process according to the present invention is 40 to 90%.

   Sulfuric acid or oleum, among others, remove substances of high molecular weight, from mineral oil, for example, aromatic hydrocarbons They are partially sulfonated and oxidized When using oleum or oil. strongly concentrated sulfonic acid attack is stronger @ The acid slurry obtained is more viscous than the fresh acid. It can even be a hard mass, for example, when refining a lubricating oil. There are, however, still many types of clear acid sludge, for example, sludge which is obtained during

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 alkylation process.

   According to the invention, the acid slurry with or without additions, if desired, after preheating to higher temperatures, is heated to. 50 to 180 C, until the reaction product; if desired, after cooling to room temperature, has reached a solid structure or constitution. After washing, the product can be ground and, if desired, dried; it is then ready for use.

  The last operations can also be carried out in reverse order.
If the heating is carried out beyond said temperature limits, the product obtained is no longer suitable or in any case less suitable for application as an adsorption agent, since the properties favoring filtration as well as the bleaching properties are lost. According to the invention, it is permissible to preheat to a temperature below 180 ° C. in order to accelerate the reaction. As soon as the reaction proceeds easily, the temperature should be brought within the temperature limits indicated.

   Besides the influence of the. temperature, the period during which the substance is maintained at that temperature is also important. If this period is too short, a good product is not obtained. Usually this period should be at least a quarter of an hour. At a lower reaction temperature, it is necessary to heat much longer, even up to 20 hours. Especially at a high temperature, the heating period can be taken too long and hence the activity decreases again. There is an optimum heating period at a certain temperature. In general, the best products are obtained at a low temperature and with a long reaction period.

   The optimum temperature and time conditions also vary, among other things depending on the amount of acid slurry which is used and its H2SO4 content, and further depend on the purpose for which the product to be prepared is to be used. simple tests what are these optimum conditions. For this purpose, for example, the substance obtained can, after washing and grinding, be mixed with the liquid to be treated and, always under the same conditions, for example at the boiling point, be filtered through a BUchnel funnel with the empty. We observe the filtration speed and, for example, the discoloration.

   For carrying out the process, all types of devices can be applied, provided that the mass can be brought to the correct temperature in an efficient manner. Externally heated stirring vessels, either horizontal or vertical, a tubular system heated by steam or otherwise, etc., can be used for, in addition to the process according to the invention, a horizontal cylinder. provided with a stirrer has been found to be effective. In the present case, part of the mass is heated until a solid substance has been obtained, after which it is repeatedly impregnated with fresh acid slurry, and heated. In some cases of mixing with additions, external heating is superfluous.

   According to the invention, it is also possible to add other substances to the acid sludge, either to increase the capacity of the plant by a more rapid development of the reaction, or because these substances are very good. market, or to make a separate heating unnecessary.

   The residue from the production of the granular material, which cannot be used as such, can be recycled into the apparatus. As additions, sawdust or other wood residue, charcoal, peat, agricultural residues, coal tar, phenol, fossil fuels, and other materials can be used. suitable, molasses, etc ..... If one does not want to heat up externally, the additions of sulfuric acid should give an exothermic reaction. In addition, granular substances containing no carbon

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 can be added as carriers, for example, if one wants to make a granular substance to replace bone black.

   For this purpose, pinch stone, apatite, granular briquettes, etc. can be used.

   The addition of a substance, such as sawdust, for example, can also be useful to obtain a final product having a less dense structure with better properties. This product is more often than not a better adsorption agent for colloids and coloring matters, just as in most cases filtration with this product is more easily done.

     Sometimes the product can be improved or modified by treating it during or after preparation, after washing or not, with oxidizing substances; for example, from air, oleum, nitric acid solutions, etc., or by further treatment of this product with disinfectants. This is shown by some examples. Especially when using poorly reactive additions, such as pitch and asphalt, treatment with oxidizing substances is advantageous.

   If desired, the product obtained can be activated at an elevated temperature, for example, between 900 and 1400 C with superheated steam or other oxidizing gases *. In this way, the usual industrial type of activated carbon can be obtained, which does not include substances which facilitate filtration, but only decoloration capacity.

  Likewise, a gaseous adsorption carbon can be obtained in a simple manner, according to the present method. In this case, hard dense granules are used.

   Hard spherical granules having a high weight per liter can be obtained, especially if the above horizontal shaft furnace is used for the manufacture. According to the invention, the granules are then impregnated each time again with the acid sludge by repeatedly adding fresh acid sludge. They then stay in the heater for a very long time, up to 100 hours. Finally, granules can be obtained which weigh, as a dry substance, more than 700 g., Per liter. Such a dense structure can be disadvantageous and it is often preferable not to impregnate several times, which makes it possible to obtain a product having a low weight per liter.

   During heating, SO2 gas can be released; it can be used for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. The washing liquid also contains sulfuric acid. This solution can be thickened or concentrated by systematic extraction to a degree such that the acid obtained is directly usable, for example for the decomposition of phosphates. SO2 can also be prepared starting from this solution, by heating it with a material carbonaceous, for example, a residue.

   The products obtained can be used for very different adsorption processes, for example for the purification of solutions of sugar or glucose, water, alcohol, solutions of organic substances, such as glycerin, sorbitol. , etc ... The high weight per liter granules, activated at a higher temperature, can be used for the adsorption of all kinds of gases, for example, gasoline, benzene, gasoline vapors. acetone, etc ...

   If the heating according to the invention is carried out for a shorter period, and if the granules obtained are not impregnated several times, the weight per liter of the dry substance, when this is suitable for the purpose. usage, is much lower. It can even fall below 300 g. The adsorbent obtained in this way has other special properties and is more suitable for the adsorption of high molecular weight substances, for example, colloids.

    Very good products are obtained by adding H2SO or, better still, oleum to the acid slurry. The products obtained in this way have

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 improved ability to facilitate filtration or decoloration
The adsorbents according to the invention can be partially dry. However, on drying them completely, their activity decreases to a great extent. Inability to fade decreases, for example up to 30-40% of the original value, so that it is not desirable to dry the adsorbent completely. Light drying, for example, to a water content of 10 to 20%, can be done without danger of this kind.

   The products according to the invention are distinguished from activated carbon in that they have a much lower carbon content.

  This content is less than 75 to 80%, the activated carbon containing more than 90% carbon. The products according to the invention therefore have an entirely different structure or constitution, namely a more colloidal character.

   Certain examples of implementation of the process according to the invention are given below, without however constituting a limitation of the invention.

  Example I. -
The process according to the invention is carried out in an apparatus shown in FIG. 1. A metal tank 1 having a diameter of 300 cm and a height of 200 cm is provided with a stirrer 2 driven by an electric motor 3. thanks to the gears 4 and 5 The metal tank 1 is heated externally by a gas supplied by the pipe 6a, and also has a gas outlet 6, an inlet 7, and an outlet 8 which can be closed by a register 9 The metal tank is gradually filled with acid sludge supplied by inlet 7, so that the mass does not overflow while foaming. The temperature varies between 140 and 160 C during this process.

   The mass gradually solidifies and becomes granular When the tank has been filled to 90 cm from its base, after about 5 hours, the supply of acid slurry is stopped, and the mixture is again heated for another hour Example II .-
The apparatus of Example I is immediately filled with 1 part clear acid slurry and 1/2 part 20% oleum. After mixing, the product is heated to 170 ° C. and then washed and ground.

  Example III.-
The kettle used in Example I is half-filled and the mixture is then slowly heated without using a stirrer, so that there is no overflow with foaming. This should be done very slowly. The heating period may vary and sometimes amount to 3 x 2 hours before solidification occurs. The temperature is then increased to 11000. The mass is left to stand for a certain number of hours, before being released from the acid after rupture or division by washing.

  Example IV. -
In the tank of Example I, 2000 kg of dried sawdust and 6000 kg of acid sludge are mixed. The mixture is discharged after stirring for half an hour and stored for another 5 hours before being washed and crushed. The temperature in the tank is approximately 70 to 90 C. External heating is unnecessary.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

     Example V
In this example, an apparatus shown schematically in FIG. 2 is used.

   In tank 10, equal weights of clear acid slurry and oleum having an SO3 content of 20% are mixed continuously.

   The mixture flows in the pipe 12 after passing through the valve 11. This pipe is heated by steam under pressure in the casing 13, which is provided with a manometer 14 and a steam trap.
15. The valve 7 is adjusted so that the mixture, after having passed the steam jacket 13, has a temperature of 1400 to 150 C. The temperature is measured by the thermometer 16. The mixture leaves the pipe 12 at liquid state, but solidifies a little later.

   The product obtained is stored for 5 hours and then it forms an excellent adsorbent after washing and grinding.
The plugs 17 and 18 of the apparatus of FIG. 2 allow cleaning of the pipe 12, after completion of the process. Example VI .-
In this example, an apparatus according to FIG. 3 is used.

   An iron cylinder 19 having a diameter of 80 cm and a length of 600 cm closed at its ends, is disposed approximately horizontally. One end is, however, 40 cm higher than the other. In this cylinder, is. provided a shaft 20 on which are mounted six strips 2o which practically touch the wall The strips are cut at intervals while lugs 22 are arranged on the wall for the realization of a better mixture The shaft and its strips rotate one revolution per 40 seconds thanks to an electric motor and via a worm wheel 24.

   At the top of the highest part of the cylinder is a supply opening 25 and, at all points, are arranged gas exhaust ducts 26, 6 inches.Ten openings 27 are also provided which are plugged and allow the inspection and cleaning of the cylinder (in Figure 3, only two openings 27 have been shown).

  On the lower side of the cylinder, at the lowest point, there is an 8 inch exhaust pipe 28 which can be plugged. Inside the cylinder, 1/3 of its length from the highest point, is a wall 29, having a height of 30 cm, which prevents liquid acid sludge from flowing towards the cylinder. the other end of the cylinder Around the cylinder is a heating space 30 which can be heated by gas burners 31. The heating space has two exhaust pipes 32 and 33.

   At three points equidistant from each other, namely at the front, in the center and at the end of the cylinder, the temperature can be taken. In normal operation, 700 kg are fed continuously per hour. of acid sludge obtained from the refining of light petroleum distillation products at the Shell Olieraffinardery in Pernis (Holland). This acidic sludge has an H2SO + content of 66% and, therefore, is liquid.

   When the cylinder is in operation, it is 80% filled with the reaction product which takes on a granular form The granules are surrounded by liquid acid slurry for about 300 cm of the length of the cylinder Temperatures in the cylinder are 180 C to the front, 150 C in the center and 150 C at the end.

   The granules are discharged semi-continuously at the end of the furnace so that the level of the granules in the cylinder remains substantially constant. The granules leaving the cylinder are stored for a few hours before being washed.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

  Example VII.-
In the cylinder described in Example VI, 200 kg of dry sawdust are added per hour, in addition to 600 kg of clear acid sludge ...

  ExampleVIII.-
400 kg of acid sludge are fed into the cylinder described in Example VI per hour instead of 700 kg. The length of stay is then proportionally longer. example IX.-
In the cylinder described in Example VI, instead of 700 kg of clear acid sludge, 400 kg of clear acid sludge, 100 kg of so-called thick acid sludge, obtained during the refining of a heavy mineral oil, are fed per hour. , 200 kg of H2SO4 and 15 kg of 53% HNO3 Example X.-
In the cylinder described in Example VI, in addition to the 700 kg of acid sludge, 90 kg of crushed briquettes having a grain size of 0 si to 15 mm are fed.

  Example XI.-
The substance obtained according to Example IV, after washing, is boiled for 20 minutes with a 10% solution of caustic lye.

  Example XII.-
The product obtained according to Example IV is boiled for 40 minutes after washing with a 10% HNO3 solution.

  Example XIII.-
The product obtained according to Example VI is activated for one hour after washing and drying at 900 G with superheated steam in a fluidized bed. Besides the superheated steam, combustion gases from an oily fuel burner are used to bring the pellets into a state of suspension.

  Example XIV.-
The product obtained according to Example IV is treated in the same way as in Example XIII.

  Example XV.-
The agitator shaft of the cylinder described in Example VI is arranged to perform twice as many revolutions as in Example VI. The granules leaving the device are then much finer, namely 0.3 to 0.03mm instead of 1 to 3 mmo. If the shaft makes even more turns, the granules become even finer.

   The following examples relate to the application of the adsorbent obtained after it has been freed from acid or other chemical materials by washing and, if necessary, after said agent has been ground Example XVI.-
Raw Cuban sugar is refined, that is, washed with water in centrifuges and released from the syrupy film surrounding the crystals.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   The sugar is then dissolved in water up to 60 Brix, the solution being heated up to 75 C.

   This solution is mixed with the washed and ground product obtained according to Example II in an amount of 1.2% by weight of the sugar present and filtered through filter presses after a contact period of 20 minutes. Previously, the pH of the liquid was adjusted to 6.8 with lime. Filtration is easy and the filtrate is quite clear, in practice from the start. 75% discoloration occurs. If a bleaching charcoal is used for the same purpose, filtration will not continue. Full filter presses are not obtained, the filtrate is not clear and the filtration pressure increases rapidly.

   The filtration is only continued in this case if an auxiliary agent for the filtration is added in a sufficiently large quantity, for example 0.8% of diatomaceous earth Example XVII.-
The product obtained according to Example VI gave satisfactory results when filtering the solution of Example XVI, but these results were not as good as those obtained with the product of Example II. Filtration continues less well and discoloration occurs for only 55%.

  Example XVIII.-
The filtration of Example XVI is carried out with the product prepared according to Example III, used as a filter promoting agent. With 1.4% by weight of this agent relative to the sugar present, good filtration is obtained. Only 60% discoloration occurs.

  Example XIX.-
The filtration of Example XVI is carried out with the product prepared according to Example XII. Again, 1.2% adsorbent is sufficient.

  The discoloration takes place for 58%.

  Example XX.-
The filtration of Example XVI is carried out with the product prepared according to Example XI. With 1% adsorbent, 55% staining is obtained.

  Example XXI.-
The solution which is obtained after the treatment with the adsorbent agent of Example XVI is passed through the granular product prepared according to Example Xo This product had, however, after washing, first been calcined in an oven. , in the usual way for bone black, at. about 500 C. The product obtained in this way can replace bone black and be regenerated in the same way as bone black.

  Example XXII. -
When converting wheat flour using HCl to a glucose solution, 0.5% of the ground product obtained according to Example II is supplied to the converter.

   Filtration of the subsequent neutralized solution through filter presses is much better than if this product has not been added; 60% discoloration occurs. Without the addition of the adsorbent, filtration is practically impossible.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

  Example XXIII. -
A glycerin solution is filtered as described in Example XXII.

  Example XXIV.-
As described in Example XVI, a strongly colored peat water is treated. Filtration is carried out on a common sand filter and good drinking water is obtained.

  Example XXV. -
The granular product obtained according to Example XIII is placed, after drying, in tanks above which pass the vapors, containing gasoline, of a rubber products factory. Thanks to this process, all gasoline is removed from these vapors.

  Example XXVI. -
The ground product, obtained according to Example XIV, is added to the sugar solution, obtained by the treatment of Example XVI, in an amount of 1% by weight of the sugar, after which the solution is filtereda In the filtrate, only 4% of the original coloring matter is found.

   According to the invention, not only an unsurpassed auxiliary agent for filtration can be obtained, but also activated carbon of the ordinary type, carbon for gas masks, and bone carbon substitutes.

   A great advantage is that the raw material already contains the activating agent so that the products obtained are very inexpensive. Acidic sludge is, in most cases, a worthless residue that is difficult to dispose of, because, when dumped into rivers or elsewhere, it causes serious damage to river and woodland fauna.
