PROCESS FOR PREPARING A CONDENSATION PRODUCT OF PHENOL AND FURFURAL.
It is known that the catalytic influence of alkaline substances on the course of a condensation reaction between a phenol, for example hydroxybenzene or methyl-hydroxybenzene, and furfural is weaker than when using. such catalysts in the reaction of a phenol and formaldehyde. Therefore, it is generally impossible to prepare economically, at the same temperature, the condensation products of phenol and furfural corresponding to the phenolformaldehyde used in industry. However, at higher temperatures a tough and viscous material often forms which cannot be worked in the usual way.
In order to overcome these drawbacks, it has already been proposed to make certain alkaline substances act as catalysts on a mixture of reaction components, comprising an ammonia or a primary amine, which accelerates the condensation reaction and counteracts the toughness of the product of the reaction. reaction to high temperatures.
The same effect can be obtained by adding more alkaline substances during the condensation reaction.
The invention also accelerates the condensation reaction and prevents that at high temperatures the material becomes viscous and tough; it uses as catalyst one or more polyethylene polyamines, that is to say linear compounds comprising at least two ethylene residues linked by an amino group, these bonds carrying the terminal primary amino groups.
The invention therefore consists of a process for the preparation of condensation products of phenol and furfuraldehyde, characterized in that the condensation reaction is brought about under the influence of a bond.

linear formed by at least two ethylene residues linked by an amino group, which bears amino groups taken at the end.
This invention is particularly important for the preparation of condensation products of phenol and furfural in which more than 0.75 gram-molecules of furfuraldehyde is bound per gram-molecule of phenol, since such condensation products exhibit properties. analogous to those of the corresponding condensation products of phenol and formaldehyde and can therefore replace these in many applications.
When preparing these condensation products with other catalysts, the aforementioned drawbacks give rise to serious difficulties.
According to the invention, the condensation reaction can therefore be carried out between 120 and 17000, conditions under which the preparation of these condensation products requires only a relatively short time. It is not necessary to add catalyst during the condensation reaction.
Preferably, 2 to 6 g will be used. of catalyst per gram molecule of phenol, as this assures a rapid condensation reaction and provides good quality products. The invention is illustrated by the following example.
Example of realization.-
In a retort fitted with a stirrer and a distillation condenser, two gram-molecules of monohydroxybenzene (free of water) and 12 g are mixed. of water, 2 1/8 gram-molecules of furfuraldehyde (free of water) and 6.4 g of a mixture of linear polyethylene polyamine consisting essentially of diethylenetriamine and triethylene tetramine.
In 30 min, this mixture is brought to a temperature of 160, then it is maintained for 2 h. at a temperature between 160 and 1640, during which time a further 0.06 gram-molecule of furfural is added.
