 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Lorsque les bagues tant intérieure qu'extérieure sont d'une seu- le pièce comme on le voit aux fig. 1 et 2, on effectue 11-assemblage en pla- çant les bagues 1 et 9 l'une dans l'autre avec une certaine excentricité; on insère ensuite le nombre de rouleaux voulu d'abord dans l'un et ensuite dans l'autre rang; puis on écarte les rouleauxles uns des autres par l'inser- tion de l'une des demi-cages de manière que chacun de ses bras 16 en saillie axiale s'interpose entre deux rouleaux consécutifs de l'un des rangs et que l'anneau de bout 15 qui les porte se loge dans l'entaille 19 du côté corres- pondant de la bague intérieure;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   IMPROVEMENTS TO ROLLER BEARINGS.

   The present invention relates to truncated roller bearings of the type in which two parallel rows of frustoconical rollers are interposed between tapered raceways formed on outer and inner raceways, said two rows of rollers being separated by a single cage and cooperating with stop members in the form of a flange or rib secured either to the inner ring or to the outer ring.

   In known bearings of the above-mentioned type, the large ends of the rollers bear against one or more ribs provided at the ends of the raceways, in particular, at the point or points where they have their largest diameter but this rib or these ribs reduce the length The space available between the two bearing rings to accommodate the roller spacer.

   The first object of the present invention is to provide a roller bearing in which there is sufficient space to accommodate a cage.

  Its further object is to produce, in a bearing with double row of rollers of the above-mentioned kind, a spacer ring of the rollers capable of being assembled by a simple operation into an independent element.
According to the invention, a double row roller bearing of the species considered here comprises outer and inner members in one or two parts each having two adjacent conical raceways inclined in opposite directions, each race bearing belonging to an inner or outer member having, between its ends, a flange or thrust rib, in combination with two spaced rows of truncated rollers arranged between opposite raceways of the inner members.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 laughing and exterior,

   these rollers having between their ends circumferential grooves cooperating with the flanges or ribs of the corresponding raceways and a single cage or spacer slotted radially, situated between the raceways and common to the two rows of rollers, this cage having end parts which cooperate with notches formed in the outer ends of the inner or outer member, or both, to form an integral whole.

   The inner and outer members may each be made in one piece, or there may be an outer member in one piece and an inner member composed of two rings with a single raceway, or there may be a one-piece inner member and an outer two-piece member consisting of two rings with a single raceway.

   Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings is a section of a roller bearing according to a first embodiment of the object of the invention, the rollers being seen in elevation.

   Fig. 2 is a section of this same bearing made in a different plane, namely, through the arms of the cage.

   Fig 3 is a partial plan view of the rollers and the cage, with the outer bearing element assumed to be removed.

   Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one half of the two part cage employed.

   The rod 5 is a section along the line V-V of FIG. 4.

   Figs. 6 to 10 are sections similar to that of FIG.

  1 but show various construction variants and arrangement of the inner and outer rolling rings of the bearing.

   Considering fig. 1 to 5 of the drawings, the bearing with two rows of tapered rollers which they represent comprises an outer rolling ring 1 in one piece having side by side, around its inner periphery, two tapered bearing races 2, 3 inclined radially outwards in opposite directions in the direction.de transverse axis of the bearing and separated in the middle of the bearing by a notch 4, the ring in question having its minimum section in the region of this transverse axis.

   Two spaced rows of tapered rollers 5, 6, respectively, the large bases of which are turned outwards, are interposed between the respective raceways 2, 3 of the outer ring and two tapered raceways 7, 8 occupying the end parts of a biconical inner raceway 9. These raceways 7, 8 formed by the inner race go by inclining radially inwards from the middle of the race towards the opposite ends of the latter, the outer diameter of the ring having its maximum halfway of the length thereof.

   Each raceway of the inner ring forms, approximately in the middle of its length, an annular flange or rib 10, 11, projecting outwards, but the raceways join together at their inner edges by a cylindrical surface of the same diameter as that of the large base of these paths, as seen at 12, so that no ribs protrude in the middle of the bearing.

   The projection of the intermediate ribs 10, 11 above the raceways 7, 8 is such that the outer circumferential surfaces of these ribs are at the same height as the middle part 12 of the ring, that which forms the connection between the two raceways or slightly below.

   Each roller 5, 6 of the respective rows has, approximately in the middle of its length, an annular groove 13, 14; these bleedings are a width

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 slightly greater than that of the ribs 10, 11 carried by the corresponding inner raceways, and the grooves 13 of one of the rows of rollers receive the rib 10 formed on one of the raceways while the grooves 14 cut in the rollers of the other row regain the rib 11 formed on the other raceway, so that these ribs prevent the rollers from moving axially.

   The two rows of rollers have a single spacer cage housed in the gap between the inner and outer rings of the bearing. This cage is made up of two similar halves comprising a ring-shaped part 15 on one side of which axially protrude arms or spacer bars 16 produced by said annular part. These two halves are juxtaposed so that the end faces of the arms 16 of one of the halves abut with the end faces of the arms 16 of the other half, and they are assembled by means of long rivets 17 which pass through coaxial holes 18 drilled in the axis of these arms 16, or else by means of tie rods or other suitable members.

   The annular portions 15 of the half-cages fit smoothly into shoulder notches 19 provided in the outer ends, so that the cage is supported by these notched ends of the inner ring.

   When both the inner and outer rings are in one piece as seen in figs. 1 and 2, 11-assembly is carried out by placing the rings 1 and 9 one inside the other with a certain eccentricity; then insert the desired number of rolls first in one and then in the other row; then the rollers are separated from each other by the insertion of one of the half-cages so that each of its axially projecting arms 16 is interposed between two consecutive rollers of one of the rows and that the end ring 15 which carries them fits into the notch 19 on the corresponding side of the inner ring;

   once this is done, the second half-cage is put in place by likewise passing each of its arms 16 between two consecutive rollers of the second row and by abutting the ends of these arms to those of the arms 16 of the other half-cage. cage, while the ring which carries these arms is also housed in the corresponding notch 19 provided in the end of the ring; finally, the two half-cages are assembled by means of rivets 17 as has been said previously, thus producing a solid whole composed of the outer ring, the inner ring, the rollers and the cage.

   In the case of the variant shown in FIG. 6 the outer ring is divided radially at its center indicated at 20 and is made up of two parts 1, 1b instead of coming in one piece as in FIG. 1. In this case, the end rings 15 of the half-cages are lodged not only in the notches 19 of the one-piece inner ring 9 but also in the shoulder notches 21 formed in the outer ends of the two halves. outer rings la and 1. The rollers 5, 6, the grooves 13, 14 of which end on the ribs 10, 11 of the inner race 9, roll between the raceways 7, 8 of the inner ring and the raceways 2,3 formed by the two corresponding outer half-rings la, lb.

   Thanks to this arrangement we also obtain an autonomous assembly.

   Fig. 7 shows another variant in which it is the outer rolling ring 1 which is in one piece while the inner rolling ring is radially divided into 22 so as to form two separate inner half-rings 9a , 9b having respectively 7.8 raceways.

   In this case, it suffices for the end rings 15 of the half-cages to fit into notches 19 formed in the outer ends of these half-rings 9a, 9b. The rollers 5, 6, by cooperating with the raceways 2, 3 of the outer ring 1, prevent the latter from being removed.

 rée in the axial direction and thus produce an integral whole. The rollers have grooves 13, 14 which engage with ribs 10, 11 formed by the corresponding inner half-rings 9a, 9b.

   In the case of the embodiments described above, in which the outer bearing ring (fig. 6) or the inner bearing ring (fig. 7) consists of two raceway half-rings u - nicely, the assembly of the bearing elements does not differ in any way from what it is in the case (fig. 1) where both the inner and outer rings are in one piece, except where the outer ring is in two parts (fig. 6) there is no need to place the rings eccentrically when fitting the rollers, and if necessary, as many units as possible can be included in each row of rollers understand, whereas where the inner ring is in two parts (fig. 7) a maximum of rollers can be included in one of the two rows.

   In the case of the variants shown in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10, the large bases of the rollers face outwards. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 8 the rollers 5, 6 having their large base facing outwards roll on raceways 3, 4 of an outer ring 1 formed in one piece and on raceways 7, 8 which an inner ring has 9 also formed in one piece, said rolling surfaces sloping radially inward from the outer ends of these rings as seen in the drawing.

   On the rolling surfaces 7, 8 are formed ribs 13, 14 on which the grooves 13, 14 of the rollers engage and the construction of the cage is similar to that which has already been described. The outer annular parts 15 of this cage fit into shoulder cutouts 19 formed in the ends of the inner ring, but it is not necessary that they also be housed in cutouts in the outer ring.
According to fig. 9, the construction is the same as in the case of FIG. 8, but the inner ring is divided into 22 so as to form two inner half-rings 9a, 9b respectively having two raceways 7, 8 on which protrude ribs 10, 11 intended to be housed in the grooves 13, 14 rollers 5, 6.

   The cage rings 15 fit into notches 19 cut in the ends of the bearing rings 9a, 9b, but it is not necessary that they also fit into the notches in the outer ring 1.

   Fig. 10 shows an embodiment in which the construction is similar to that of FIG. 8, except that the outer ring is divided into 20 to form two separate half-rings la, 1b respectively having the raceways 2, 3, the inner race 9 being made in one piece, and having Raceways 7, 8 on which protrude ribs 10, 11 which cooperate with grooves 13, 14 made in the rollers 5, 6. The rings 15 of the half-housings fit only in notches 19 machined in the ring inner 9, because it is not necessary that they also fit into the notches of the outer ring.

   To assemble the bearing according to fig. 8, the rollers are inserted after having arranged the bearing rings eccentrically with respect to one another. In the case of fig. 9, where it is the inner ring which is in two parts, one can directly improve the number of rollers of each row, while in the case of fig. 10, where it is the outer ring which is in two parts, it is possible to fill up with rollers from one of the rows, the other row being put in place by eccentric arrangement of one of the half-rings la or 1b with respect to the inner ring 9.

   In all cases, the stop ribs 10, 11 may be present on the outer ring of the bearing instead of the inner ring.

   If you want the resistance to axial thrust to be greater in one direction than in the other, you can give the rollers of one of the rows a greater obliqueness than those of the other, or increase their length, or increase both their obliqueness and their length,
