  ROULEAUX DISTRIBUTEURS D'ENCRE A L'AIDE D'UNE BROSSE TOURNANT HORS DE CON- TACT AVEC LES ROULEAUX DISTRIBUTEURS D'ENCRE.

   (Inventeur : G. R.   Brodie) .

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  INK DISPENSER ROLLERS USING A ROTATING BRUSH OUT OF CONTACT WITH THE INK DISPENSER ROLLERS.

   (Inventor: G. R. Brodie).

   The take-up roll consists of a cylindrical roll, arranged parallel to the other rollers of the press. He is so arranged. to be able to move intermittently, by first coming into contact with the surface of the cylinder of the inkwell, in contact with which it is charged with an ink film and then coming into contact with the first roller of the series of ink dispensing rollers, to which it transmits the ink film which: it is loaded in contact with the inkwell cylinder.

   When the take-up roller is in contact with the inkwell cylinder, it tends to adopt the peripheral speed of the inkwell cylinder, while after being brought into contact with the supply roller, the take-up roller tends to adopt the higher peripheral speed of the latter. Thus, the peripheral speed of the take-up roll is constantly changing and, more often than not, is either higher or lower than the speed of the roll with which the take-up roll is contacted. This situation results in an irregularity of the ink film applied to the series of dispenser rollers. Furthermore, this circumstance has the effect of subjecting the various elements of the rotary press to excessive mechanical stresses and strains.

   Another drawback encountered in the operation of a rotary press is the return to the inkwell of dried ink particles or other solid particles, for example fibers from the web. paper, particles that may accumulate on the dispenser roll series. It often happens that such material "goes upstream" along the series of rollers and is transported.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 by the take-up roller to the inkwell cylinder, the cylinder which brings them back to the inkwell.

   The object of the present invention is to eliminate the take-up roller and furthermore to avoid any contact between the distributor rollers and the inkwell cylinder. These important advantages, as well as others, are due to the present invention, as will be apparent from the description thereof, which will be given hereinafter.

   According to the present invention, the printing ink is applied to the dispenser rollers by means of a brush extending over the same length as these rollers and rotating at high speed in the immediate vicinity of at least one roll. distributor, but out of contact with all the distributor rollers, this rotation taking place around an axis parallel to that of these rollers. The ink is applied to the bristles of the brush at one or more points along their path. The speed of rotation of the brush is such that ink is sprayed by centrifugal force at another part of this path onto one or more of the distribution rollers.

   The ink can be applied to the bristles of the rotating brush by causing the bristles to move in contact with the surface of a usual ink cylinder for example, the quantity of ink collected by the bristles being a function of the thickness of the ink film which covers the inkwell cylinder, and being adjusted by adjusting the knife in a manner known per se. However, the field of application of the invention is not limited to this method or to these particular means consisting in applying the ink to the bristles of the rotating brush. The inkwell cylinder can be replaced by other ink-charged regulating surfaces to apply the latter to the rotating brush. Such an ink-charged surface should extend the same length as the brush.

   In order to prevent the ink from being projected by the rotating brush onto other members of the press and the accessories thereof, the entire perimeter of the path of the brush is advantageously surrounded almost completely by surfaces ensuring the transport of ink, for example from dispensing rollers, and by the regulating ink transport surface, by which the latter is applied to the brush. However, other protective surfaces may be employed for this purpose, provided that these are constructed and arranged in such a way as to prevent the accumulation of ink at points from which it might drip onto. dispenser rollers and thus destroy the uniformity of the ink film transported to the cylindrical shape.

   The invention will be described and explained below in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows, in a somewhat schematic and fragmentary manner, a vertical section of a rotary press incorporating the embodiment of the invention considered herein as preferable.

   Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the rotating brush and the inkwell cylinder.

   In these drawings, the support frame of the rotary press is designated by 1, this frame supporting the various rollers which will be described hereinafter as is well known to technicians. An inkwell cylinder, known per se, is designated by 2, while cylinders 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 represent dispenser rollers which together with cylinder 2 of the inkwell surround with substantially complete the peripheral path of the rotating brush designated by 10. Further distributor rollers 11, 12, 13 and 14 serve to transport the ink film from the roller 7 to the cylindrical form 15.

   The various rollers and the cylindrical shape which have just been described can be of the known type. Moreover, apart from the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 In view of the fact that these rollers are arranged around the rotating brush, as well as the method and means used to supply the rolls with ink, the press can be of conventional construction and be operated in accordance with common practice.

   The rotating brush 10 is formed by flexible elements
16, preferably bristles or the like, affixed by adhesive or otherwise to blocks 17, preferably of metal, these flexible members and blocks extending the entire length of the rotating brush.

   The blocks 17 are provided with longitudinal grooves 18, as shown in the drawing, these blocks being called to be removably fixed, using machine screws 19 and clamping plates 20 for example, to the core 21 of the brush, which is in turn keyed or fixed in some other way on the shaft 22, with which it is called upon to rotate, this shaft being in turn supported by the frame 1 of the press. The clamping plates 20 are provided at their outer ends with shoulders 23, which fit into the grooves of the respective blocks 17 and also secure the latter to the main frame or core of the rotating brush.

   The longitudinal movements of the blocks 17 are prevented by the flanges 24. The shaft 22 is driven in rotation by any suitable means, for example an electric motor with adjustable speed, designated by 25.

   The method of construction of the brush shown here offers the advantage of allowing rapid removal of the bristle-holder elements for their replacement or cleaning. However, the illustrated brush can be replaced by rotating brushes of other types, without departing from the spirit of the present invention. For example, it is possible to use a cylindrical brush provided with bristles oriented in the radial direction and distributed uniformly over the entire peripheral surface of the cylinder or over one or more sectors of this surface. In most cases, it will not be necessary or advantageous to place the bristles around the entire circumference of the cylinder; however, it is understood that the bristles must be distributed in a substantially uniform manner over the entire length of the brush.

   During the operation of the press, a column of ink 26 is held in the inkwell 27. The cylinder of the inkwell is rotated, in a clockwise direction, in contact with the ink. , the thickness of the film of ink transported from the inkwell to the surface of the cylinder of the inkwell being controlled, in a manner known per se, by the knife designated by 28.

   The rotating brush 10, which extends over the same length as the other rollers, is arranged so that its axis is parallel to the axes of the latter and is spaced from the cylinder of the inkwell by a distance such that, when this brush is driven in rotation, the bristles 16 move in contact with the ink film of predetermined thickness, which is constantly maintained on the peripheral surface of the rotating cylinder of the inkwell. Thus, the bristles of the rotating brush are loaded with a controlled amount of ink from the cylinder of the inkwell, this ink being projected from the bristles, by centrifugal force, onto the surfaces of the dispenser rollers. surrounding areas.

   D. Preferably, the speed of rotation of the cylindrical brush is set independently of the speed of the other rollers. The speed of rotation of the brush is liable to vary within wide limits, the optimum speed being determined by other operating conditions, including the diameter of the path along which the rotation of the bristles takes place, the amount of ink required and the degree of viscosity and paste consistency of the ink. The optimum rotational speed of the brush is generally in the range of about 60 to 600 revolutions per minute.

   In the apparatus shown, the brush is mounted so as to turn

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 ner counterclockwise. When the brush rotates in this way, most of the ink is usually sprayed onto the surface of the dispenser roll which occupies the position of roll 3 in the design. In this arrangement, a uniform quantity of ink is constantly supplied to the train of dispenser rollers, the quantity of ink applied to the respective longitudinal sections of these rollers being precisely controlled by means of the adjustment of the knife 28.

   The rotating brush may be arranged relative to the inkwell cylinder such that the tips of the bristles barely touch the surface of that cylinder, or the brush may be placed in a position closer to the cylinder. the inkwell, in such a way that the bristles bend somewhat by contact with this cylinder. In the latter case, ink particles may be projected by the bristles onto the cylinder 3 at the moment when the tension exerted on the bristles is released by the fact that they break contact with the surface of the cylinder. of the inkwell. It can therefore be seen that the projection of ink from the bristles onto the distributor rollers may not be due solely to centrifugal force, but may be provided, at least in part, by the bending and straightening of the bristles.

   The relative amount of ink applied to any longitudinal section of the respective dispenser rollers depends on the thickness of the ink film with which the corresponding section of the ink-cylinder cylinder is loaded, which amount can be easily controlled, as indicated above, by adjusting the knife.
