<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO DUST VACUUMS.
(having been the subject of a patent application filed in the United States of America on November 18, 1952, non-W.A.
Humphrey .- declaration by the applicant)
This invention relates to canister-type vacuum cleaners employing a flexible hose connected to a dust collector and comprising an elongated housing mounted, for example, on skids, to be dragged across the floor in a generally horizontal position.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved device for exhausting air from the outlet end of the vacuum cleaner.
According to the present invention, the canister vacuum cleaner comprises a housing provided with an exhaust port in an end wall, a baffle spaced from this end wall facing the exhaust port to deflect the exhaust port. air leaving the lumen away from the axis of the latter, and a deflector placed under the lumen between the chica + ne and the end wall to prevent air from being blown up and down on the floor or a support surface on which the vacuum cleaner rests.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the exhaust port is arranged to receive a hose coupling fitting for blow cleaning, and an opening is made in the chuck in the same alignment as. the exhaust port, a valve normally being provided to close this opening, but capable of opening to allow the introduction of the pipe coupling. The valve may include one or more pivoting flaps which normally close together the opening in the baffle and are hinged near their outer edges so that they can be pushed back into the open position by the fitting. coupling of the hose when it is inserted.
Preferably, the end wall of the housing has a reinforcement.

dark and the exhaust port is formed in the recess of the wall. The end wall provided with the recess may have a protruding edge located approximately in the same plane as the baffle, such that the dust extractor can be erected to rest on the baffle and the protruding edge.
When the end wall of the housing has a recess and a protruding edge some parts of which extend at least to the plane of the baffle so as to form a stable support for the upright vacuum cleaner, one or more intermediate parts of the projecting edge can be less high, notches being able for example to be formed in the edge to allow the escape of the air when the vacuum cleaner operates upright.
The invention can be put into practice in different ways: a specific embodiment will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 2, of a dust extractor according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view, with partial cut away of the dust extractor seen from the discharge side.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2, the valve being closed, and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 with a pipe coupling inserted into the exhaust port.
The dust vacuum cleaner shown in the drawings comprises a housing 10 mounted on a pair of shoes 11 and having at its opposite ends a suction end cap 12 and an exhaust end cap 13, the first being provided with a suction port 14 to receive the coupling of a pipe 15, the other end of which is connected: - to a dust-removing or suction instrument. Inside the housing 10 are a filter bag 16 and a motor-fan unit 17 producing suction, the rear or exhaust end 18 of which is housed in an elastic cup 19 which in turn rests in an annular rim. 20 of a partition 21 fixed to the housing 10 and supporting the motor. Between the engine and the partition 21 there is a final filter.
Suitably spaced openings 23 are provided in the bulkhead to allow air from filter 22 to pass therethrough.
The wall of the cap 13 of the discharge end has a re-entrant portion 25 forming an outer recess or diffusion chamber 26. Thus the material of the end cap is recessed from the edge 27 resulting in an inclined wall. 28 leads to a transverse end wall 29 provided at its center with an exhaust port 30. A sleeve 31 is interposed between the transverse wall 29 and the partition 21 and engages in the flange 20 for reinforce the transverse wall 29. Openings 32 are made in the sleeve 31 to allow the passage of the air coming from the space 33 between the cap 13 of the discharge end 13 and the partition 21.
On the outside of the cap 13, in the recess 26, is a flat disc-shaped baffle 35, which is kept spaced from the transverse wall 29 by a pair of brackets 36 secured to the wall by bolts 37 'on the legs. opposite sides of the exhaust port 30. The disc 35 is pierced with an opening 38 which is in the same alignment as the exhaust port 30. The baffle 35 is located in the same plane as the ridge of the edge. 27 of bonnet 13 so that when the vacuum cleaner is erected upright the baffle and brim 27 rest together on the floor.
Each of the supports 36 has the general shape of a U and com-

takes a base 40 bearing on the end wall 29 of the end cap .. exhaust pipe and, at the ends of the base of the upper branches
41 and lower branches 42 extending in planes perpendicular to the base but oblique with respect to its length. These branches have a notable width so as to guide the air coming from the exhaust port
30. Each of the branches 41 and 42 has at its end an ear 43 in which is mounted a pivot 44 carrying a valve flap 45. A torsion spring 46 on each pivot 44 normally maintains the flaps.
45 of the valve in a closed position closing off the opening 38 of the baffle 35.
The upper edges 50 of the upper branches 41 together with the end wall 29 and the baffle 35 form an upper outlet 51 for the air exhausted by the lumen 30. In a similar manner; lateral outlets 52 are formed between the disc 35, the end wall 29 and the adjacent edges 53 and the upper and lower legs
41 and 42 of each support 36.
A lower outlet 55, directed from top to bottom, is formed between the lower edges 56 of the lower legs 42, the end wall 29 and the baffle 35. As shown in FIG. 1, an arcuate baffle 58 extending from baffle 35 toward end wall 29 to a point 59 in close proximity thereto prevents air exhausted through lower outlet 55 from hitting directly on it. - support face 57.
As shown in figs. 2, 3 and, 4 the cap 13 of the exhaust end has in its edge 27 a pair of diametrically opposed notches 60 to allow the escape of air from the recess 26 when the vacuum cleaner is placed upright on the chicane 35 and the edge 27.
As shown in FIG. 4, a flexible pipe coupling fitting can be inserted into the cap 13 of the discharge end by pushing its end 61 into the opening 38 so as to separate the valves 45 from each other until until its end reaches the exhaust lumen 30. A spring latch 62 then engages the edge of the opening 38 to hold the flexible hose coupling in place.
In normal service, for vacuum cleaning, the flexible hose coupling 15 is inserted into the suction port 14, as shown in FIG. 1. The air sucked in from a dust collector or squeegee by the flexible pipe and through the filter by the motor-fan unit 17, is then discharged through the openings 23 of the partition 21, into the chamber 33 and from there through the openings 32 of the sleeve 31, then through the exhaust port 30 into the air diffusion chamber 26. it hits the valves 45 and the baffle 35 and is diverted to the outside through the upper outlet 51, the side outlets 52, and the lower outlet 55.
The air passing through the side outlets 52 is guided by the legs 41 and 42 of the supports 36 so as to be discharged laterally, parallel to the support surface or the ground 57 and then along the inclined wall 28 to exit. The box. The legs 42 of the supports 36 cooperate to direct the air from the bottom upwards through the upper outlet 51. Any air flowing from top to the bottom through the lower outlet 55 hits the arcuate deflector 58 which guides it laterally and backwards. bottom up away from support surface or floor 57.
Thus, the air discharged from the exhaust port 30 is distributed in a number of separate divergent veins, none of which is directed to the surface of the ground where the air might tend to lift dust and dirt. .
If the dust vacuum is to be used for the blast cleaning, the flexible hose coupling is removed from the suction port and inserted into the exhaust port.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
evacuation as shown in fig 4. The end of the coupling fitting will push back the valves 45 which pivot around the pins 44 overcoming the action of the springs 46. When the coupling fitting has been inserted fully into a position where it is held by the latch 62, it closes the outlets 51, 52 and 55 so that all of the air coming from the lumen 30 must pass through the flexible pipe 15.
The latter can be released by releasing the latch 62.
The vacuum cleaner can also be used in the upright position, in which case the air exhausted by the exhaust port 30 finds an exit through the notches 60.
