EMI2.1
<tb> 100kg <SEP> fonte <SEP> de <SEP> cubilot <SEP> et <SEP> 50kg <SEP> acier <SEP> : <SEP> 150kg <SEP> alliage <SEP> avec <SEP> env. <SEP> 2,2%c.
<tb>
EMI2.2
100 If il If Il 100kg " : 200kg fi n 1,6%c. 50 " " n n 100kg if : 150kg If Il If l,l%c.
50 n " " It Opkg n .: 50kg rr n If 0,7%c.

METHOD OF MANUFACTURING SHOTS OF CAST IRON OR STEEL.
Melt shot made by spraying a melt from a cupola in water usually has a carbon content of 3% or more which cannot be reduced by addition at the time. smelting, steel or wrought iron because the melt absorbs carbon from the coke in the cupola. The shot having such a high carbon content has a white structure, that is to say based on cementite and therefore a great brittleness which has the result that, when used for the sawmill or for blowers jet, the isolated grains break prematurely and consequently lose efficiency. In addition, this shot causes heavy wear of the projection devices.
To reduce these disadvantageous characteristics, it has already been possible to completely or partially eliminate the cement structure by heat treatment of the shot and the elimination of carbon in the form of graphite. However, the grains then acquire a relatively softness. high and they wear out quickly in use.
The present invention relates to a process suitable for the manufacture of cast iron or steel shot having a carbon content of less than 3%, and which, at the same time has the advantage of making it possible to control the content at will. carbon and consequently the properties of the shot with regard to hardness, elasticity, etc ... and this without great expense.
According to the invention, it is proposed for this purpose to combine cast iron, melted in a cupola and still in the liquid state, after casting with liquid steel and then to project, in a manner known in it even, the alloy thus obtained in water or in a similar liquid. Steel in the liquid state can be produced in a converter or an electric furnace.

By suitable choice of the quantitative proportions of molten iron and molten steel, the carbon content of the alloy can be determined at will within very wide limits.
Taking as a basis the cast iron cupola with a content of 3.2% carbon and steel with a content of 0.1% carbon, we obtain for example:
EMI2.1
<tb> 100kg <SEP> cast iron <SEP> of <SEP> cupola <SEP> and <SEP> 50kg <SEP> steel <SEP>: <SEP> 150kg <SEP> alloy <SEP> with <SEP> approx. <SEP> 2.2% c.
<tb>
EMI2.2
100 If il If Il 100kg ": 200kg fi n 1.6% c. 50" "n n 100kg if: 150kg If Il If l, l% c.
50 n "" It Opkg n.: 50kg rr n If 0.7% c.
The process thus makes it possible, by modifying the proportions of the two constituents in the mixture, to produce iron or steel shot having the desired carbon content, from 3% and below, and having very high qualities. different. It is thus possible to produce a soft shot suitable for example for the surface treatment of sensitive materials, such as also a tenacity and not fragile shot and also a shot with a harder and more breaking grain which, however, is much less fragile than the grain. grain of a shot obtained with pure cupola iron which therefore has a higher carbon content.
The process also provides the possibility of adding alloy metals capable of improving the quality of the shot, such as silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium, vanadium, etc., these metals can, whether in the liquid state or in the solid state, be already added to the molten steel or only to the alloy in the liquid state. Addition in solid form makes possible the temperature rise produced by the hot steel in the melt.
In addition, the shot, in the crushed or unground state, can receive an additional heat treatment; for example, it can be kept for about a heifer at a temperature between about 700 and 800 G and then given a light quenching. .
The new process also makes it possible to effect very quickly and without particular conditions, the modification of the qualities, that is to say of the chemical composition and consequently of the mechanical properties of the granules, and thus makes it possible to reduce considerably to in the future the number of particular species currently in existence.
