EMI2.1
<tb> I <SEP> II
<tb>
<tb> Si <SEP> 62 <SEP> à <SEP> 65 <SEP> % <SEP> 80 <SEP> à <SEP> 82 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Al <SEP> 11 <SEP> à <SEP> 14% <SEP> 6 <SEP> à <SEP> 7 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Ca <SEP> 18 <SEP> à <SEP> 20 <SEP> % <SEP> 7 <SEP> à <SEP> 8 <SEP> % <SEP>
<tb>

STEEL MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR TRANSFORMER AND DYNAMO.
According to a known process, instead of producing steels for transformers and dynamos in an electric furnace, this operation is carried out by the basic refining process at the converter by blowing air at relatively low temperature into a cast iron beforehand. desulphurized with change of slag and subsequently treating the steel in two phases so as to pour it with the second slag into a first bag or similar apparatus, to transfer it without its slag into a second ladle of casting or similar apparatus, to deoxidize and alloy it after addition of corresponding amounts of ferro-silicon, aluminum and calcium-silicon, then to cast it after a sufficient residence time.
Thanks to the mode of driving the charges to the converter and to the subsequent treatment which has just been described, it is in fact possible to produce steels for transformers and for dynamos having the highest degrees of purity and the best electromagnetic properties, such as 'that is to say steels which could only be produced in the past by an electric furnace.
In the known process, during the subsequent treatment of the steels in the second ladle, the alloying and deoxidation operation takes place under a strongly basic slag which is formed by the addition of calcium-silicon and alloying agents and ie deoxidation of ferro-silicon and aluminum.
It has now been found that it is possible to further significantly increase the quality of steels for transformers and dynamos by the described process, when the deoxidation and alloying of the steels is carried out in the second ladle. or similar apparatus with an al-

three-part bond comprising silicon, calcium and aluminum.
These three-element alloys have already found use in deoxidation, for example of structural steels, and their composition was approximately as follows: 45% silicon, 25% calcium, 15 to 20% aluminum, res - you being iron.
Extensive research has shown that in the processing of steels for transformers and dynamos, high qualities are achieved when, for the alloying and deoxidation of steels refined by the basic converter refining process, we work in the second bag with a deoxidizing slag and deoxidation products of the following composition:
40 to 60% CaO
5 to 15% SiO2
10 to 30% of A1203 the remainder being oxygen compounds of iron and sulfur, etc.
According to the invention, it is possible at the same time to form such a slag and deoxidation products of the same composition and to combine the steel for transformers and dynamos (more than 2.3% and up to 4.4% silicon) using a three-element alloy comprising silicon, aluminum and calcium, of the following composition:
60 to 85% silicon
5 to 15% aluminum
5 to 20% calcium The following three-element alloys have been found to be particularly useful:
EMI2.1
<tb> I <SEP> II
<tb>
<tb> If <SEP> 62 <SEP> to <SEP> 65 <SEP>% <SEP> 80 <SEP> to <SEP> 82 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Al <SEP> 11 <SEP> to <SEP> 14% <SEP> 6 <SEP> to <SEP> 7 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Ca <SEP> 18 <SEP> to <SEP> 20 <SEP>% <SEP> 7 <SEP> to <SEP> 8 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>
The corrections to be made to the basicity of the slag and to the silicon contents of steels, etc., can be made by corresponding additions of ferro-silicon and aluminum.
It has been observed that during the subsequent processing of steels for transformers and for dynamos in the second ladle, with the use of the three-element silicon-calcium-aluminum alloy characterized above, slags are produced which are both strongly reducing and very fluid which quickly separates from the bath,
energetically rid it of its impurities and lead to very pure steels which are particularly free of slag.
