 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  BREMSHEY & C, residing in SOLINGEN-OHLIGS (Germany).

   DOUBLE SOFA CHASSIS.

   The subject of patent 506.120, an improvement on patent n.489.367, is a double sofa frame which comprises two steel tubular frames of identical dimensions, provided with foot brackets in several pieces arranged at the ends of the head, folding. below the frame and elbows outwards, so that one of the frames, after folding down the foot stirrup, can be tucked under the other frame with the foot stirrup open.

   The above double sofa frame is, in accordance with the invention, perfected and further transformed because the leg stirrups are constructed in three pieces, using short vertical center pieces rigidly connected to the ends of the spmmier and in which are inserted above, removable retaining stirrups, constructed in the form of frames, serving to support the mattress and the like, and below the stirrups proper, which can be folded inwards and cannot be removed provided with a movable articulated frame.

   A construction of this kind of foot stirrups offers over the known device the advantage that the side retaining stirrups can be constructed relatively high, so as to form a particularly good support for the bedding, or respectively for the arms. which must be placed on the upholstered seat for daytime use of the sofa and can also accommodate a correspondingly greater height. As the retaining brackets are in fact removable, their height can easily exceed the intermediate space existing between the retracted lower frame and the upper frame.

   Likewise, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 The bending of the foot stirrups can now be flatter, because in earlier versions of sofa frames it had to be adapted by short elbows to the height of the side retaining stirrup attached to the retracted lower frame. The flattened elbows result in constructional advantages, greater stability and a more pleasing appearance of the foot stirrups. Finally, the possible disassembly of the side retaining stirrups is also advantageous because during daytime use of the sofa frame, these stirrups can still serve to keep a cover taut protecting the two frames.

   The connection between the three parts of the foot stirrups according to the invention is established in a particularly advantageous and stable manner if one stamps at the upper and lower ends of the fixed central parts, sockets provided with conical recesses, in which Enter conical pins stamped at the ends of the retaining stirrups or respectively of the foot stirrups. This connection guarantees more support on parts of the foot stirrups and facilitates their handling. The sleeves can also be located at the ends of the brackets and the tapered pins at the upper end of the fixed central part of the bed base. This simplifies the setting-up and edging of the cover.

   According to the invention, the folding foot stirrups are connected by joints to guided fishplates so as to be able to slide in the lower bushings of the fixed central parts and at the inner end of which is fixed a piston guided in the tubular central part. and serving as a support for the articulated connection. This results in a very stable extensible connection between the parts mentioned, which makes their handling particularly simple when the foot stirrups are retracted or deployed.

   The drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of the double sofa frame according to the invention.

   Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the sofa frame when in use during the day.

   Figure 2 shows, also in perspective, the end of one of the two parts of the frame, and Figure 3 shows on an enlarged scale the foot ends of the double frame, partly in vertical section.

   The bed base 1 provided with an elastic extension device is rigidly connected at its four corners to central tubular parts 2, arranged vertically and at the upper and lower ends of which are stamped sockets 3 or respectively 4 provided with recesses 5 or conical orifices 6. The latter serve to receive conical pins 7 or respectively 8 which adapt thereto and which are arranged at the ends of the upper retaining brackets 9 and of the foot brackets themselves. 10 having a flat elbow 11. The pivots 8 of the calipers 10 are connected to lugs 12 of the fishplates 13 articulated at this location and at the inner end of which is fixed a piston 14 which moves in the central tubular part 2.

   The fishplates 13 are of sufficient length for the pistons 14 to enter in the immediate vicinity of the upper bush 3 when the foot caliper 10 is retracted.

  This results in a double longitudinal guide, one of the support points of the fishplates 13 of which is located on a short axial segment 15 of the internal opening of the bushes and of which the second fulcrum is formed by the piston 14. . This guidance still persists in the stretched position of parts 10, 12 and 13 in which the foot stirrups 10 are folded down to the center of the frame. One of the sofa frames can in this position be tucked under the other, the foot stirrups 10 of which remain vertical, and this operation is facilitated by adapting to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 foot brackets 11 of the rollers 16.

   The relatively high constructed retaining brackets 9 are particularly suitable as a support for the mattresses and bedding 17 when using the sofa frame at night, and as a support for the arms 18 when using during the day. The arms of the sofa themselves can therefore be relatively high. The retaining brackets 9 are removed before retracting the lower frame, because when the lower frame is retracted, the distance measured between the central part
2 of the lower frame and the frame 1 of the upper frame is significantly smaller than the height of the retaining bracket.

   The two sofa frames, tucked into each other during daytime use, are covered with a cover 19 provided with openings '20 through which penetrate the pivots 7 of the retaining brackets. 9, so as to keep the cover 19 firmly in place and taut (Fig. 1). Optionally, the tapered pivots 7 can also be arranged at the upper end of the fixed central parts 2 and the sockets 3 at the ends of the retaining brackets 9, and in this way the positioning of the cover 19 is facilitated by introducing the openings 20 on the pins 7.

   The removable retaining brackets 9 can of course also be chosen low enough so that they can remain attached to the lower frame even in its retracted position.
