 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  SALOPIAN ENGINEERS LIMITED residing in SHROPSHIRE (Gde Bretagne).
DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL TRACTORS.

   The present invention relates to wheeled agricultural tractors intended to carry at the rear a plow or other mounted or semi-mounted implements by means of a system of hydraulic lifting connecting rods, the articulations of the connecting rods generally serving for assembly. interchangeable instruments.

   The object of the invention is to increase the efficiency of a wheeled tractor for hard work (in particular in the case of plowing) without significantly increasing the weight of the tractor and its equipment.

   Since a tractor generally has to perform many tasks, the light weight of the tractor is desirable to reduce soil compaction by wheel pressure which tends to occur in all jobs except plowing. But a low weight causes: the wheels spinning in the event of hard work, even if the engine power is sufficient to provide the traction force necessary for this work.

   A rear mounted plow commonly carries a caster which, when the hydraulic mechanism lifts the plow to rotate at the ends of the furrows or for transport, moves away from the ground. When the charm is lowered, its wheel rests on the natural surface of the ground and determines the depth of penetration of the plow (s) of the plow.

  The plow caster follows the tractor more or less in line with the tractor's off-furrow wheel, which is usually the left rear wheel and which also rests on the unworked area. The other rear wheel of the tractor, usually the right wheel, follows the last plowed furrow in the previous course in which it is guided, so that the tractor is tilted towards the plowed ground by an equal height of the depth plowing. As a result, weight is placed on the furrow wheel

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 and the weight supported by the wheel out of the groove decreases.

   While the furrow wheel not only rests on the firm surface of the newly plowed furrow but also occupies the width of the furrow fairly exactly, providing some lateral stop, the other wheel simply rests on the soil surface. This surface can be loose; it can also be wet; as a result, the coefficient of adhesion may sometimes be lower on the out-of-groove wheel than on the in-groove wheel. The traction force of the tractor is based on a good grip of the two wheels and, in addition to the installation of wheel strips intended to bite into the ground, it is often necessary to add weights to the rear wheels of the tractor or to ballast them. rear tires to improve grip.

   Despite these measures, there is often slippage, so it may be necessary to limit the plowing depth or the number of furrows imposed on the tractor to a little less than what would be possible using the full power of its engine. In the worst conditions on very wet ground, or on a steep climb, the wheels may even start to spin in place, causing the wheels to sink and subsequently stall the engine due to its inability to exit. the wheels from the holes they dug.

   The present invention allows grip to be increased, particularly under conditions where the out-of-groove wheel tends to slip and, by reducing the tendency of the wheel to slip or spin in place, effectively utilizes engine capacity. .

   The object of the present invention is a wheeled agricultural tractor of the type mentioned provided with a support comprising a carrying element placed so as to support an element of the hydraulic lifting device so as to receive the weight of a plow or other implement. when the lifting device is lowered to bring the instrument into the working position, means being provided to adjust the height at which the element of the lifting device is supported by the supporting element and therefore the height at which it is the instrument in its working position.

  The support can be placed on one side of the tractor (for example the left side or the side of the wheel out of furrow) so as to present the supporting element to a part of the lifting device (for example a draw rod) located that side. '
In the case of plowing, the tractor also receives loads from the weight of the soil turned over by the plow as well as any downward thrust component produced by the plowing. The adjustable support allows you to control the plowing depth. No caster is required to adjust the plowing depth and if such a caster exists on the plow it can be removed or removed from the ground by lifting it.

   Since the transferred weight is borne entirely by the tractor, some of this weight is applied to the right rear wheel, as it has been found in practice that in deliberately seeking to spin the wheels, none of the wheels tend to slip before the other, which proves that the grip of the right wheel is also improved. In addition, the use of a bracket for the left side of the tractor to support a reversible "hitchhiker" plow has shown that the improvement in grip occurs in both directions of tillage, albeit in one of the ways. meaning the left wheel has become the furrow wheel.

   In one embodiment of the invention, the support is formed by a longitudinal boom pivoting on the tractor and comprising a bearing surface, the height adjustment being effected by a device causing this boom to pivot around its fulcrum.

   Thus, such an arrow can be located under the rear axle boot of the left wheel and pivots on a part fixed to this boot,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 a screw or other means for adjusting the position of the end of the boom at the front of the box to vary its height relative to the tractor frame, the height of the outgoing rear end thus also being adjusted.

   In many tractors, the rear axle box on the right side may not easily accommodate the joint of a longitudinal boom because of the position of the tractor's controls there, but since As stated above, an arrow placed under the box on the left side can be used effectively even when the left wheel becomes the tractor's furrow wheel.

   To take account of the undulations of the ground, the support can be loaded by a spring so as to allow limited vertical movements of the work implement relative to the tractor. This tends to keep the plowing depth uniform. To remedy any tendency to slip resulting from a tendency of the contact with the support to be broken due to conditions exceeding the compensating power of the spring, it is possible to associate. With the support a hydraulic cylinder provided with means under the control of the. operator to lift the bearing surface until contact is restored.

   Thus, in the form of support constituted by a longitudinal boom, the spring and the hydraulic cylinder can be combined with a screw adjustment device placed at the front end of the boom, where. the boom is connected to the tractor frame.

   The description which will follow with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of nonlimiting example will make it clear how the invention can be put into practice.

   Fig. 1 is a side view of a tractor and a multisoc plow mounted at the rear in the working position, the rear wheel out of the furrow, of the tractor being supposed to be removed.

   Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the middle part of Fig.

   Fig. 3 is a perspective view with a rear wheel removed further showing slight variations.

   Figs. 4 and 5 are partial sections through lines 4-4 and 5-5 of FIG. 2.

   Fig. 6 is a view on a larger scale with partial section of the adjustment device shown in FIG. 2.

   Fig. 7 is a side section of part of FIG. 6.

   Fig. 8 is a rear perspective view of the hydraulic lifting device showing its association with a support jib as well as one of the variants of FIG. 3.

   The tractor 10 has one of its front wheels 11 (the gunche wheel) resting on the surface 12 of the ground and the other front wheel as well as the rear furrow wheel 13 resting on the bottom 14 of the last furrow previously dug. The rear wheel not shown (left wheel) rests on the surface 12 with the tractor tilted to the side of the plow depth 15.

   The plow 16 is connected to the tractor 10 by a pair of traction rods 17 (see also Fig. 8) and a middle upper rod 18, the rods 17 being connected by lifting rods 19 to arms 20 attached to the ends of the plow. a transverse shaft 21 of the hydraulic unit 22 of the tractor. A control lever 22 makes it possible to normally lift the plow 16 to the transport position above the ground 12 while maintaining the hydraulic pressure and to lower the plow while removing the pressure.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   A bracket 24 is fixed under the axle box 25 (using, if there are any, smooth or threaded holes drilled in the boot) on the side of the wheel out of the furrow of the tractor 10 to form a fulcrum at transverse pivot 26 for an arrow 27 with an inverted U-section. The rear end 28 of the boom ends with the point of articulation 29 of the left traction rod 17 and the lifting rod 19, and has a bearing surface formed by an insert plate 30 (Fig. 5) located below a pivot shoe 31 suspended under the articulation 29 or in its vicinity.

  When the plow has been lowered by removing the hydraulic pressure on the articulated system by means of the control lever 23, the weight of the plow is transferred to the rear end 28 of the boom 27.

   The front end 32 of the boom 27 is connected to the tractor by an adjustment device 33, the details of which appear in FIGS.

  6 and 7. To a transverse pivoting block 34 (Fig. 4) provided with journals 34A rotating in the wings of the boom is connected the lower end 35 of a cylinder rod 36. The piston 37 of the cylinder moves in a hydraulic cylinder 38 connected by a pipe 39 to the hydraulic unit 22, under the control of a lever 40 which already exists in many groups for controlling other hydraulically actuated equipment which can be mounted on the tractor.

   The head 41 of cylinder 38 is drilled to receive the smooth end 42 of a threaded rod 43, and it is recessed at 44 to receive a washer 45 held by a cotter pin 46, the screw thus being free to rotate relative to the cylinder head. The rod 43 is screwed into a nut formed by a pivoting transverse block 47 supported in a block 48 provided with longitudinal journals 49 rotating in the lugs 50 of a support bracket 51 fixed to a part 52 of the tractor. A handwheel 53 is attached to the upper end of the rod 43.

   Fig. 3 shows a modified console 51A having elongated ears 50A and suitable for mounting on certain types of tractors this figure also shows the pivot shoe 31 carried at 29A in front of the articulation point 29 of the connecting rod 17 and the rod 19 (see also Fig. 8). The rear non-groove wheel 13A of the tractor is visible in Fig. 8.

   Between a flange 54 attached to the cylinder rod 36 and the pivoting block 34 is mounted a strong compression spring 55. When no hydraulic pressure is applied to the cylinder 38, the upward thrust of the downstream end 32 of the boom 24 is transmitted by the pivoting block 34, the spring 55, the end 36A of the piston rod 36, the cylinder head 41, the threaded rod 43 and the console 51 to the part 52 of the tractor.

   The plow is set to the desired working depth by rotating the handwheel 53, and the spring 55 allows the charm to move up or down relative to the tractor when working in undulating terrain. Normally, an oil pressure is not applied in the cylinder 38, but if the compensation allowed by the spring 55 is not sufficient to maintain between the plates 30 and 31 the contact necessary to avoid the risk of the wheels slipping. , (following which the wheels could start to turn on themselves and sink), the operation of the lever 40 when this circumstance occurs or when the operator sees that it is likely to occur, ensures maintaining or reestablishing contact between the plates 30 and 31 to prevent slippage.

   Such a hydraulic control is generally necessary only rarely and only for a few moments, so that the hydraulic unit 22 is not subjected to excessive use.

   The diameter of the cylinder 38 is such that the application of the total available oil pressure is not sufficient to completely lift the plow out of the working position. Such a lifting of the plow is effected by operating the lever 23 in the usual manner.

 the. The handwheel 53 and the lever 40 can both be operated by the operator seated in his seat.

   The boom 27 is relatively light with the U-section shown, but an equivalent box section or the like can be used to achieve the necessary rigidity. The adjustment device 33 is also relatively light. The advantage of the invention derives from the transfer of the weight of the plow to the tractor and not of an additional weight applied to the tractor. In particular, it is not necessary to ballast the tires or weigh down the wheels; wheel bands are also not required.

   The shoe 31 pivots so as to maintain its face applied to the plate 30 and the dimensions of the plate and the shoe are sufficient to provide a suitable reciprocal bearing surface and to allow relative lateral movement between the plow and the tractor during work. . The articulation of the front end 32 of the boom 27 with the rod 36, and the double journal articulation of the threaded rod 43 on the console 51 gives the flexibility necessary to bend to the relative movements between the boom 27 and the tractor, other than the relative movement allowed by the compensation spring 55. A hanging tab 56 (Fig. 2) passing through a slot in the upper face 57 of the boom 27 may be provided to oppose the transverse torsion of the boom.

   Tests carried out with a four-wheel tractor weighing 2 1/4 tonnes (including the assistant lifting device) and rear-wheel drive, show that by loading the tractor with a five-furrow semi-effluent plow weighing 600 kg, the two rear wheels start to spin at exactly the same time for an upward slope of 1 to 3 and a plowing depth of 30 cm. This shows that the weight is supported so as to share the grip between the two rear wheels roughly equally. Slippage can be greatly reduced, and by using cylinder 38 when necessary, the wheels are completely prevented from spinning in place.

   In this way, the engine capacity can be used more fully and the tillage speed can be increased, good tillage being possible up to slopes which are not normally suitable for wheeled tractors. It is often possible to plow a greater number of furrows. Significant fuel savings are achieved and apart from greatly reducing tire wear, the tractor's transmission mechanism also suffers less wear.

   When the invention, as in the preceding description, is applied to a hydraulic lifting device comprising the two traction rods 17, the lifting rods 19 and the upper middle rod 18, the hydraulic energy plays no role in the support of the weight of the plow when it rests on the rear end 28 of the boom 27, but the flexibility of the connecting rod system allows it to contribute more than half of the weight of the plow to the wheel out of the furrow of the tractor, can be cam from the position of the arrow 27 on the side closest to this wheel.

   The device of the invention can form an integral part of a tractor. However, the invention is particularly advantageous as an accessory applicable to existing tractors. The complete attachment, boom 27, pivot support 24 and adjuster 33, can be mounted very quickly on the tractor. No modification of the existing equipment is necessary and the presence of the device does not interfere with the use of the tractor with other implements. In addition, when it is mounted on a tractor, the device can be used to transfer the weight of instruments other than the plows to the rear wheels, if this transfer is advantageous to allow the tractor to exert a large tractive force.
