Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   The present invention relates to fittings for pipelines of pressurized fluid agents, and particularly to fittings for valves and similar apparatus, equipped with control means for the discharge of fluids via auxiliary pipelines connected to the fittings and to means. used to discharge fluids via the pipes.

   A first object of the present invention is to provide an improved connection of the type indicated above, for interrupting the discharge by the means used for the auxiliary conduits when the elements of the connection are detached or simply loosely connected.

   Another object is to provide an improved device for preventing relaxation.

   A third object is to provide cooperatively acting connecting members adjusted to each other in balanced relation, without taking into account the connecting forces which might tend to adjust unbalanced relation members.

   The aim is to provide fittings having the characteristics mentioned above, the elements of which are simple and inexpensive in construction, are easy to assemble and will always be in good working order and require no replacement or repair.

   Other objects, not specifically listed above, will emerge, the invention being described in more detail in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. I is a sectional view of the valve, constructed according to the present invention , attached to a container for a fluid medium under high pressure; - Figure 2 is a sectional view, taken along line 2-2 in Figure 1; connecting components for the exhaust have been omitted; - Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the outlet of the valve, with the connecting members in position; - Figure 4 is a sectional view showing a discharge pipe coupled to the outlet of the valve; - Figure 5 is a detailed view of a ring used to connect certain elements of the connector.

   The drawing and, in particular, figure 1, shows a container 10 for the storage of a fluid medium under high pressure, such as for example carbon dioxide and a control valve for the discharge 12, attached to the container. .

   The valve 12 is of the type illustrated in U.S. Patent No. 2,383,961 and generally comprises a body 14 fitted with an inlet 16, an outlet 18, including a threaded portion 19 (, Figures 2 and 4) and a valve seat 20 placed between the inlet and the outlet to cooperate with a valve member placed on a spring 22. A cap 24 closes one end of the chamber or cylinder 26, containing a piston 28 which can be actuated by the 'fluid agent to move a rod 30-which will move the valve member 22.

   The operation of the piston 28 tending to remove the valve member 22 from its seat, is controlled by a pilot part of the valve 31, normally placed against the seat 32 surrounding an orifice 33, and adapted to be removed from its seat. by a pilot valve control head 35 attached to the valve body. When the pilot part of the valve 31 is lifted from its seat, the fluid medium is led to the piston chamber 26 by means of passages which will be described.

   A portion of the chamber 36 of the valve body, sealed by the control head 35, establishes communication between the orifice of the valve

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 pilot 33 and a passage or pipe 38 (Figs. 1 and 2), which joins a pipe or passage 40 extending longitudinally through the wall of the threaded portion 19. A second pipe or passage 42 passes longitudinally through the wall of the threaded portion and joins a pipe or passage 44 which extends into the piston seat at the rear of the piston 28. The lines 40 and 42 are designed to be communicated with the fluid stream by means of an annular groove 46 created in an annular chamber 48, as described below, thus completing the circuit of the fluid stream from chamber 36 to piston chamber 26.

   The fluid agent discharged via the outlet 18, is led towards the place where it is to be used, by means of a pipe 54 connected, while remaining removable, to the threaded portion 19, by means of a nut 55 having an orifice 56, the utility of which will be described below. Elements are provided at the free part of the threaded portion which cooperate with the connecting nut and the groove 46 to complete the fluid flow circuit, mentioned above, when the nut is properly secured.

   In accordance with the present invention, said elements (Figs. 3 and 4) comprise an annular member, such as a flat, elastic, and slightly deformable metal ring, 60, designed to be placed on the base 48 and to be placed in the groove 46 to fix this last and provide a flow path of the fluid. A second annular member 62 is mounted above the ring 60 and is removably retained by a ring 64 disposed in an annular groove 66 drawn in the inner wall of the member 62 and an annular groove 68 drawn in the outer wall. of the reduced free part 70 of the threaded portion, thus retaining the ring 60 on the threaded portion.

   The ring 64, as shown in Fig. 5, is generally square in shape and this ring, when secured between the grooves 66 and 68 is designed to retain both the member 62 and the threaded portion, with sufficient force. friction to hold the member 62 on its base during transport of the valve, thus preventing the entry of foreign matter into the groove 46 and the pipes 40 and 42.

   The second annular member 62 has an inclined or tapered outer wall 72 which provides a seat for the flared end 74 of the pipe 54 and, when fixing the connecting nut, serves to push the member 62 towards the ring. 60. The member 62 has a face at the end 76 for fixing the outer face of the ring 60, so as to hold the ring on its seat and to seal the passage during the pressure of the fluid in the chamber. groove. As shown, the end face may have inclined inner and outer portions 78 and 80, respectively providing an annular apex portion 82 which contacts ring 60 in the area extending beyond groove 46.

   When the connection nut is fixed, this annular portion at the top applies pressure on the ring 60 between its inner and outer peripheries. This forces the ring 60 to bend slightly in the groove 64 and to press with uniform pressure against portions of its seat at the inner and outer peripheries of the groove 46 to obtain a balanced position of the ring and adequately close the seal. groove in order to transform it into a passage for the establishment of the communication of the flow of the fluid between the pipes 40 and 42.

   In operation, with the connection nut attached, as shown in Figure 4, the control head is arranged so as to remove from its seat the pilot member of the valve 31, the fluid being thus conducted from the container to the chamber. piston 26, via. the orifice 33, the chamber 36, the pipes 38 and 40, the groove 46 and the pipes 42 and 44. This causes the movement of the piston 28 to remove from its seat the member 22 of the main valve and thus drive 1 discharge of the fluid agent contained in the container, via the outlet 18 in the pipe 54.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   If the control head 35 is inadvertently employed when the line 54 and the union nut 55 are detached, the fluid setting the piston in motion does not reach the piston chamber, but is released into the atmosphere via. line 40. Accordingly, the main discharge of the fluid will not occur, and the possibility of an explosion of the vessel is eliminated.

   If the control head 35 is inadvertently used when the nut 55 is loosely attached to the threaded portion, the fluid operating the piston is discharged inside the nut, near the free part of the threaded part and is released. sent to the atmosphere through port 56, preventing the main discharge from occurring.

   It emerges from the foregoing description that the present invention provides an improved connector of the type indicated. The elements of this connector are simple and inexpensive in construction, and are easy to manufacture and assemble.

   The improved arrangement of elements to complete the circuit of the fluid stream for causing the movement of the piston prevents leaks tending to cause faulty piston operation. The fitting is of sturdy construction and can easily withstand any severe use to which it may be subjected.

   As various changes can be made in the form, construction and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of this invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages, it should be understood that the present description is to be regarded as illustrative and not as a li mitative.

   It should also be understood that the following claims cover all the generic and specific features of the invention described herein, and any statement of the scope of this invention which, as a fact of language, can be said to fall within this scope.

  I claim:
1. the combination of a duct element including attachment means, an annular base and a radial tube extending the element towards the inside of said base and provided with a groove on the intermediate outer perimeter between the two ends.
