<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a hydraulic adjustment system comprising a cylinder, one end of which is connected to a pipe intended to supply an adjustment liquid to a device to be adjusted, and an alternating piston movable in the cylinder and acting on the liquid. adjustment.
The invention is mainly characterized in that the reciprocating piston moving in the fixed cylinder has a longitudinal bore in which protrudes, through one end of the piston, a fixed plunger (fixed with respect to the cylinder) arranged so as to pump, in said pipe, a liquid, so as to compensate for any loss of liquid in said pipe during the movement of the piston in the direction which away from the end of the cylinder which is connected to the adjusting pipe, the piston comprising a passage provided therein, regulated by a check valve situated in the piston and connecting the active chamber of the cylinder to the active chamber of said piston bore.
An embodiment of the invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings which show an embodiment of the invention, applied to a system for adjusting the rudder of a ship.
Figure 1 shows a circuit diagram of the control system.
Figure 2 shows an axial section of the cylinder and piston arrangement of the adjustment system.
Figure 3 shows a similar axial section where the parts however occupy a different operating position.
Figure 4 shows yet another axial section of a cylinder and piston arrangement of the adjustment system, the moving parts occupying an outer terminal position.
The drawings show the invention applied, insofar as it concerns Figure 1, to a steering system for a ship o In the drawing, the reference 1 indicates the rudder of the ship, mounted to pivot at 2 and arranged to be regulated by a rudder bar 3 via a hydraulic adjustment system 4. This adjustment system 4 comprises two cylinders 5, arranged in parallel, spaced apart and each of which contains a piston 7 (see the other figures) which is capable of to slide in its cylinder under the effect of a gear 8.
The shaft 9 of the gear 8 is coaxial with the shaft 10 of the bar and is rigidly connected to the latter, the same gear therefore serving to actuate the two pistons 7 and moving them in opposite directions.
The cylinders 5 are respectively connected, at their lower ends, to pipes 11 and 12 which, in turn, are respectively connected to actuating devices 13 and 14 which are arranged to directly actuate the rudder 1.
Each of the two pistons 7 comprises a cylindrical bore 15 in which protrudes a plunger 16 which is fixed at its upper end to the upper wall of a container 17 serving as a source of supply of working liquid and in the bottom wall of which the upper end parts of the cylinders 5 are fixed in a sealed manner. The bore 15 communicates with the cylinder 5 by a passage 19 formed in the piston 7, said passage being regulated by a valve 20 arranged as a check valve and charged by a spring 21. The piston 7 comprises a fluid inlet port 22 arranged so as to place the bore 15 of the piston in communication with the container 17 so that the liquid present in the container can pass through the inlet port. 22 and enter bore 15.
The arrangement further comprises a second piston, i.e. plunger 16, having a passage 23 which extends from the inner end of the plunger and communicates with it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that with the outside of the plunger by one or more orifices 24 arranged between the ends of the plunger 16 and arranged so as to put, in certain positions which the piston 7 occupies while moving, the inner end of the bore 15 in communication with the inlet port 22. The passage 23 has an extension 25 which extends to the outer end of the plunger 16, said extension 25 being regulated by a valve 26 which is also arranged as a check valve and is loaded by a spring 27.
The extension 25 opens at the outer end of the plunger 16 where it communicates with the upper part of the interior of the receptacle 17. In addition, the plunger 16 is provided, at its inner end, with a finger 28. arranged to actuate the valve 20, so as to cause the latter to open the communication between the bore 15 and the passage 19 which communicates with the interior of the cylinder 5.
The arrangement works as follows:
In the operating position shown in figure 2, the inlet port 22 is closed by the wall of the cylinder 5 and if the gear 8 turns clockwise, the inlet port 22 is discovered as shown in figure 3 and comes into communication with the container 17. If the rotation of the gear 8 continues, the piston 7 withdraws further from the cylinder 5 so that, finally, the piston 7 assumes an external terminal position.
When gear 8 rotates in the opposite direction from the position of Figure 4, port 24 of plunger 16 and inlet port 22 of piston 7 close, causing a certain vacuum in the bore 15 and the passage 23. If the rotation of the gear 8 continues in the same direction, the inlet port 22 is uncovered as a result of which, due to the vacuum, the liquid s' flows towards the bore 15. If the rotation of the gear 8 continues, the orifice 24, associated with the plunger 16, enters into communication with the interior of the receptacle 17, the orifice 22, associated piston 7, then being closed by the wall of cylinder 5.
Now, if the gear 8 is rotated in the opposite direction, a pressure builds up in the bore 15 which, if there is air present in the piping of the control system, is created. opens valve 20 whereby liquid is transferred from bore 15 into the control system piping while increasing the pressure therein to a value determined by the spring load of check valve 26. All air accumulated, thus compressed under the check valve 20, is removed from the system by moving the piston 16 to the end position shown in figure 4 in which the finger 28 pushes and opens the valve 20, whereby the air The tablet escapes to the interior of the oil container 17 through the passage 23, the orifice 24 and the orifice 22.
The air remaining in the extension 25 is discharged to the outside through the valve 26 the next time. the piston 7 is moved from the position shown in figure 3 to that shown in figure 4.
It is understood that the movement of the piston 7 in the cylinder 5 causes the rudder 1 to pivot to the corresponding extent.
It can be seen that the constructive execution of the invention is obviously not limited to the embodiment shown and described above, but is susceptible of various variants, in its details, in the field of the invention.
