Une autre caractéristique de l'invention réside dans un dispositif original pour le réglage des patins des freins;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans le second cas, frein sur différentiel (voir figs. 6 et 7) sur l'extrémité de l'axe ou de la clef de frein 12, portant l'engrenage 10, tra- versant le flasque 1 et s'étendant à l'extérieur de celui-ci est calé le pignon conique 32. Ce dernier attaque le pignon conique 33, avec lequel il forme un renvoi d'angle. Ce pignon conique 33 est fixé et porté par un ar- bre 34 qui est lui-même supporté et guidé par les paliers 35-36 et 37 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a mechanism for actuating the pads of drum brakes which has the particular feature of eliminating the profiled cams hitherto used for separating the inner pads of said brakes in order to apply them against the wall. inside the drum to obtain the desired braking action.
According to the invention, said cams are replaced by two straight gears housed inside the chamber delimited by the brake drum and its fixed flange. These two gears arranged side by side and in engagement, are each fixed on an axis, one of these passes through the flange of the brake and extends outside it and is intended to receive the device of 'actuation which will impart to it an angular displacement which it will transmit to the corresponding gear which causes an angular displacement of the same value but in the opposite direction of the second gear.
Each of these gears is coupled by means of an adjustable thrust bar with two yokes to the adjacent brake shoe.
The simultaneous angular displacement of the two gears transmits a thrust to the brake pads and applies them against the interior part of the brake drum.
This actuation mechanism is independent of the hydraulic actuation of the spacing of the brake pads; these two types of actuation can moreover be present in the same brake, it suffices, for this purpose, that the coupling of the gear drive is made in such a way that it does not oppose the movement of the brake pads when this is effected by hydraulic actuation, which can be obtained by providing an oblong light breakthrough in the web of the pads at the point where said web is attacked by the gear actuation.
The invention also relates to external devices for actuating the gears, both for wheel brakes and for those on the differential.
Ordinary first case, a lever is mounted on the outer part of the shaft driving one of the internal gears and this lever is actuated by one: adjustable rod connected to another lever wedged on the brake control shaft, ; in the second case, this end of the external axis carries a pinion, conical engaged by another bevel pinion so as to form an angle transmission and on the extended axis of this last pinion is wedged a lever which, as in the previous case, is actuated by an adjustable rod controlled by the brake control shaft.
Another characteristic of the invention resides in an original device for adjusting the brake pads;
Some embodiments given by way of non-limiting example are shown in the appended drawings in which: FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the inner mechanism of a drum brake.
Fig. 2 is a partial detail view of the actuation of the pads of a drum brake.
Figure 3 is a side view of the brake pad adjusting device.
Fig. 4 represents: - in section the actuation of a wheel brake equipped with the gear transmission according to the invention.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the action shown by fig 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
FIG. 6 represents in section the actuation of a brake on differential, by conical torque.
Fig. 7 is a front view of the actuation shown in figo6
In fig 1 the fixed brake flange is integral, depending on the case, either with the axle 2, or with the differential housing, the drum 3 is integral, as appropriate, either with the wheel or with the connecting transmission shaft. the differential gearbox
The brake pads 4-4 'are housed inside the drum 3 and pivotally mounted on the axes 5-5' (fig 1 and 3) forming part of the device allowing the adjustment of the distance between them. of the inner wall of the drum 3 and which will be described later in detail.
Each of the pads 4-4 'is provided on the inner face, that is to say, that which is opposite to that carrying the brake lining, with two extensions 6 and 7, intended, the first (item 6) to receive and in holding the push rod 8 of the hydraulic working cylinder 9, the second (item 7) to receive and allow the attachment of the end of the push bar connecting said shoe to the corresponding gear of the mechanical actuation.
According to the invention, the profiled cams used until now - and actuated by the brake key to achieve the spacing of the pads and their application against the interior wall of the drum are replaced by an actuating mechanism consisting of a pair of spur gears 10-11, one mounted on a fixed axis and integral with the flange 1 and the other on an axis 12 (or brake key) passing through said flange and extending to the outside and perpendicular to the plane of the latter. The two gears 10 and 11 are permanently engaged and the anterior ends of their respective axes are supported by the plate 13
Each of the gears 10 and 11 is coupled by means of a push bar to the brake pad which is adjacent to it.
The execution being the same for the two gears, the following description will be limited to one of these two sets.
The push bar 14 (fig.l) is shown on a larger scale in figo 2 and comprises: a yoke 15 whose two cheeks are joined by a pivot 16 which connects it to the extension 7 of the brake pad 4 and a yoke 17 fixed by a pivot 17 eccentrically disposed on the gear 10. The two yokes 15 and 17 are joined together by a bar 19, engaging via a threaded portion 20 in a housing 21, also threaded, drilled in the body of the yoke 17, this thread 20 is provided with a locking nut 22. At its opposite end the bar 19 ends in a cylindrical head 23 engaged in a housing 24 drilled in the body 25 of the yoke 15 Immediately behind this head 23 the bar 19 is provided with the hexagonal part 26.
The head 23 of the bar 19 is secured in the housing 24 of the yoke body 25 by a pressure screw 27; where appropriate, the cylindrical head may be provided with cavities intended to receive the tip of the screw 27
This embodiment of the push bar 14 allows the adjustment of its effective length, which adjustment is necessary, on the one hand, to ensure perfect balancing of the thrust exerted on each of the pads of the same brake and on the other hand, to make it possible to take up the possible play arising between the part of said pad and the wall of the drum following the wear of one or the other of these two elements or both.
Said adjustment takes place as follows; after loosening the locking nut 22 and the set screw 27, the bar 19 can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
more or less engaged or more or less clear, thanks to its threaded end 20 in or of its threaded housing 21 drilled in the body of the yoke
17 and its length can be exactly adjusted to the desired value ;, after which it is sufficient to lock the pressure screw 27 and the nut 22. The brake pads 4 and 4 'are biased towards each other by the return spring
28, fixed in the usual way.
In order to allow the free action of the hydraulic working cylinder 9 moving the pads 4 and 4 'apart when pressurized fluid is sent to it by the thrust exerted on the brake pedal and to prevent the actuating mechanism of said pads from speaking system of gears and push bars described above does not oppose the said action of the hydraulic working cylinder, an oblong slot 29 is pierced in the extension 7 of the pad 4 and the pivot 16, connecting the two arms of the yoke 16, crosses the said 'light. The position.: .. and the length of said slot 29 are calculated so that the pivot 16, in the rest position, bears against the outer end of this slot, that is to say against the end. close to the shoe in the extension of which it is pierced (see fig. 2).
This light 29 allows the movement of the pad in the direction;, active, that is to say in the direction of the drum ;, when the separation of the pads is caused by the hydraulic working cylinder, but does not interfere or not in no way delays the separation of said shoes by the system of gears and of the push bars, in the event of failure of the hydraulic device.
This original arrangement of the two control systems in the same brake allows the thrust exerted on the service pedal, the mechanical actuation of the same brake by the linkage actuated by the same pedal (as defined in a previous patent application by the same applicant) and also the mechanical actuation of this brake by the hand lever or the brake handle which is within reach of the driver of the vehicle.
Obviously, the two actuations of the pads of this brake are absolutely independent of each other and that said brake can, according to requirements, be equipped either with these two actuations, or only with the actuation. by the system of gears and push bars, in the case, for example, of heavy vehicles (trucks, tractors, trailers, etc.) the skid actuation by hydraulic means (one working cylinder per drum of brake) can be removed. Likewise, the latter type of actuation can be suppressed in the differential brakes.
As regards the external devices for activating the system of gears and push bars for the spacing of the brake pads, these are different, depending on whether it is a mounted drum brake. on wheel or differential.
In the first case (brake mounted on a wheel) (see fig. 4 and 5) on the end of the axle or of the brake key 12 carrying the gear 10, passing through the flange 1 and extending to the On the outside thereof, the lever 29 is wedged which, through the rod 30, is connected to the control shaft of the brakes, not shown. The outer part of the axis 12 can be enveloped, protected and supported by a housing 31.
In the second case, brake on differential (see figs. 6 and 7) on the end of the axle or of the brake key 12, carrying the gear 10, passing through the flange 1 and extending to the end of the shaft. 'Outside thereof is wedged the bevel gear 32. The latter attacks the bevel gear 33, with which it forms a bevel gear. This conical pinion 33 is fixed and carried by a shaft 34 which is itself supported and guided by the bearings 35-36 and 37;
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bearing 35 can be fixed to the outer face of the flange 1, while the bearings 36 and 37 are supported by the casing or the rear axle housing Between the bearings 36 and 37, the shaft 34 carries a lever 38, which, by a rod 39 is connected to the control shaft of the brakes not shown.
As for the original device for adjusting the brake pads, this is represented by fig 3
Between the lower ends of the brake pads 4 and 4 ', profiled in the form of a clevis or fork, is riveted on the inner face of the flange 1, a solid metal plate 40, carrying two vertical and parallel tabs 41 and 41. round light pierced in each of these tabs is crossed by a threaded rod 42-42 'furnished on either side of the corresponding tab with a nut 43-43' and a locknut 44-44 '.
The distance between the tabs 41-41 'is sufficient to leave between the ends of the head of the threaded rods 42-42' the free space for the adjustments to be made. At their opposite end, the threaded rods 42-42 'are engaged in the lower ends of the sliders 4-4 'profiled, as said above, in the shape of a clevis or fork, the axes. = 5 and 5 connect, respectively, the pads 4 and 4' in which they are fixed by thread - ge or by any other suitable means, to said threaded rods 42-42 'which they pass through perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the latter.
Finally, a spacer 45, secures the ends of the legs 41-41 'in which it is fixed by means of studs or screws 46-46' o This spacer increases the rigidity of the legs 41 and 41 'and guarantees their resistance to the ground - licitations to which they are subject.
From the foregoing description and from the examination of pin 3, the possibilities of adjustment and play take-up clearly appear presented by this assembly.
Indeed, the symmetrical position of the two pads 4-4 'with respect to the face of the drum on which they are called upon to act, is easily adjustable by adjusting the length of the threaded screws 42-42' which can be blocked in the desired position by nuts 43-43 and locknuts 44-44'a As the pads 4-4 'or the active face of the drum wear, their position in relation to the brake drum can be modified in the necessary proportion. Each of the two pads can be adjusted independently of the other.
