Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The object of the invention is a system for cooling the pistons of combustion engines, especially high-power diesel engines for trucks, in which a quantity of oil derived from the main circulation of lubricating oil is sprayed or injected, to using a device such as a nozzle, and under the full pressure of circulating lubricating oil, against a part of the piston to be cooled, for example, the inside of the piston bottom. The object of the invention is to make the quantity of lubricating oil intended for cooling the piston or the bottom of the piston depend on the number of revolutions of the engine.

   In high-power diesel engines for trucks, the temperature of the piston, mainly of its hottest part - the bottom of the piston - is regulated by the continuous projection or ejection of the piston. 'a trickle of oil against this part. For this purpose, a nozzle supplied with oil taken from the main lubricating oil circulation is usually used. This nozzle can obviously be replaced by any other projection or launching device, provided that it fulfills the same function. In this case, a device of the aforementioned type is provided for each cylinder. However, the use of a nozzle as a device for spraying the oil has hitherto had the drawback that this nozzle frequently becomes clogged as a result of the impurities contained in the oil.

   To remedy this, we found ourselves faced with the need to provide a nozzle with a diameter larger than that which would normally correspond to the intended purpose. Thus, the experience acquired in practice has shown the advantage of not using a nozzle with a diameter of less than 1.5 mm.

   Now, by adopting a nozzle of such a diameter, the quantity of lubricating oil flowing through all the nozzles in the case of a polycylindrical engine is really considerable. For an 8-cylinder engine, the total section of the nozzles of all the cylinders, adopting for example the above-mentioned nozzles with a diameter of 1.5 mm, is approximately 14 mm2, which would correspond for a single symbolic nozzle of replacement at a nozzle diameter of approx. 3.5 mm. However, practical measurements have established that the total quantity of lubricating oil used by the engine corresponds to the section of a symbolic replacement nozzle whose diameter would be only 4.5 mm, which immediately shows that the proportion lubricating oil flowing out of the spray nozzles is very considerable.

   Under these conditions, the lubricating oil pressure must therefore be high enough to be able to supply sufficiently all the parts of the engine which need oil. This in turn presupposes a relatively high propulsion capacity of the oil pump. However, oil pumps of this size are disadvantageous from the point of view of engine economy, since they consume a substantial amount of energy which the engine must be able to supply.

   If, on the other hand, by using oil spray nozzles for cooling the piston, the oil pump is too sparingly dimensioned, the lubricating oil pressure drops to zero when the engine is idling or idling, the quantity of oil conveyed decreasing in effect proportionally to the number of engine revolutions while the flow section of the spray nozzles remains the same.

   This results in the disadvantage that during the idling or idling of the engine the lubricating oil, following the path of least resistance, for the most part flows through the relatively large bore nozzles, whereas bearings, for example, only receive a small quantity of lubricating oil; Moreover, this unnecessary flow occurs at a time when cooling the piston or the piston bottom is not absolutely necessary.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   It goes without saying that similar situations can also arise when, instead of the nozzles, a device is used for spraying the oil against the bottom of the piston, the consumption of which is intended to cool the pistons. requires, for construction reasons, larger quantities than those normally required.

   In order to eliminate the drawbacks pointed out, provision is made, according to the invention, to equip the device for the cooling oil derived from the main circulation of lubricating oil and projected against the bottom of the piston, with a device. shut-off operating independently of the pressure relief valve usually provided in the lubrication circuit and controlled by the oil pressure of the main lubricating oil circulation so that in the event of a drop in pressure to a preset limit, for example when the oil pump is idle, the flow of oil through the spraying device is automatically stopped.

   If a nozzle is used, in a known manner, as an oil projection device, there is provided upstream of this nozzle, according to another characteristic of the invention, a check valve which responds to the pressure existing in the nozzle. main circulation of lubricating oil in the event of idling or idling of the machine in such a way that the flow of oil through the nozzle is blocked under the above operating conditions.

   This makes it possible to adopt an oil pump of significantly reduced capacity without in any way compromising the effective cooling action exerted on the pistons.

   The drawings illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the invention.

   They show :
Fig. 1 a vertical section through an injection engine, with a nozzle connected to the main circulation of lubricating oil for cooling the piston, this nozzle and its support being shown partially in perspective.

   Fig. 2 a section on an enlarged scale of the nozzle and its support produced according to the invention.

   In fig. 1, which represents the usual type of injection engine with a combustion chamber in the piston, reference 1 designates the piston, the inner bottom wall 2 of which is sprayed with oil ejected by the nozzle 3 placed near the engine crankcase and supplied under pressure from the main lubricating oil line 4 to the nozzle 3 through the channel 5 provided in the support 6 of the nozzle.

   As best shown in fig. 2, the nozzle 3 is preceded by a check valve 7 mounted in the nozzle support 6 and undergoing the constant pressure of a spring 8. The supply of oil to the nozzle 3 by the valve 7 and the support nozzle 6 is indicated by arrows 9.

   Reference numeral 10 denotes a cleaning orifice made in the nozzle holder and normally closed by a. plug. The tension of the spring 8 is such that it is normally overcome by the pressure existing in the main lubricating oil line 4, the valve 7 therefore remaining constantly open during normal engine operation and the oil being ejected through the nozzle 3 against the bottom of piston 2. As soon as the oil pressure set by the spring tension falls below normal, for example when the engine is idling or idling, the valve 7 is closed by when the spring pressure becomes sufficient, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 nozzle 3 thus being closed and the lubricating oil can no longer flow except to the other parts to be lubricated, ie preferably to the bearings of the engine.

   The valve 7 preceding the spray nozzle 3 has no relation to the pressure relief valve ordinarily provided in the lubricating oil circulation for the discharge of the excess lubricating oil in the bottom of the crankcase and its operation is completely independent of that of this pressure relief valve.

   So. as pointed out at the beginning, the device designed according to the invention is particularly useful and advantageous in that the heating of the piston of the engine is very reduced during the idling or at idling of the engine. and that the projection of cooling oil against the bottom of the piston is therefore superfluous under these operating conditions.
