" PROCEDE POUR L'OBTENTION DE- COLORANT DE BIXINE A PARTIR
DE GRAINES DE ROCOU".-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Si on mélangeait cet extrait, en
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING BIXINE DE-COLORANT FROM
OF ROCOU SEEDS ".-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a process for obtaining bixin dye from annatto seeds, in particular for coloring butter or margarine.
For the basic extraction of the dye, it is already known to treat the seeds with the aid of solvents, in particular with the aid of alcohol, ketones or chlorinated hydrocarbons. This known process for obtaining the dye has, however, appreciable drawbacks, in that the filters clog up and clog very quickly, while only a low yield can be obtained by coloring at capacity. unsatisfactory coloring.
. To remedy the drawbacks in question, in accordance with the invention, the known base extraction is combined with another treatment, according to which the crude extract obtained after evaporation of the solvent is subjected to an extraction with the known base. using low-boiling hydrocarbons, in particular using light gasoline or petroleum ether, after which the concentrate obtained after evaporation of the hydrocarbon is processed in an appropriate ratio according to the purpose intended use using fatty oils. Thanks to the second extraction which follows the base extraction, the accompanying materials of an unsaturated character, in particular of a resinous and tarry character, are specially removed, so that a particularly bixin dye is obtained. pure and above all physiologically irreproachable.
The crude extract is an oily liquid of dark color. If we mixed this extract,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to obtain a finished product of the usual type, with a fatty oil, it would be necessary to carry out filtration, so that the appreciable disadvantages of the known process would remain. The hydrocarbons, with the aid of which the crude extract must, in accordance with the invention, be treated again, do not in themselves constitute aes agents capable of dissolving the bixin dye.
These hydrocarbons, however, serve to extract the oily constituents from the crude extract, in which, on the one hand, the bixin dye is soluble and which, on the other hand, allow dissolution of the bixin dye in the oil. hydrocarbon. A clear purple dye is obtained in liquid form, which has a coloring power of about 30 g, stronger than the usual bixin dye dissolved in fatty oil, which is used in particular for coloring butter or butter. margarine.
This concentrate can then be treated with fatty oil in the appropriate ratio, depending on the intended purpose for its use. This mixture with fatty oil can be done at the place of use, in which case it suffices only to warm the fatty oil somewhat, for example rapeseed oil or olive oil. so that the air bubbles can be released more quickly, which are introduced into the oil at the same time as the dye concentrate. It is thus possible to bring the dye concentrate to the market, which allows appreciable savings in terms of packaging and transport. Neither the concentrate nor the mixture of the concentrate with a fatty oil has any tendency to dissociate into any components whatsoever.
The residue in the form of a dry powder obtained after evaporation of the hydrocarbon can still be
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
once moistened with a little oil and extracted again with petroleum ether or light gasoline.
For the second stage of extraction, a low boiling point hydrocarbon should be selected in order to prevent destruction of the dye at excessively high temperatures during evaporation.
Under certain circumstances, the process according to the invention can be improved by adding small amounts of oil to the low boiling point hydrocarbon. For this purpose, amounts of about 2 to 3% are sufficient. This variation or modification of the process is particularly suitable when the oily constituents of annatto seeds available are particularly poor. The color yield of the process is very high and poor.
rise, calculated on the basis of the seeds, at 8 to 12%, depending on the quality of these seeds, Depending on the process, the dye is completely extracted from the annatto seeds themselves, so that the residues of the first stage of extraction do not contain almost more workable bixin dyes.
The residues of the extracted annatto seeds, as well as the residues of the crude extract, still contain homologs of the desired bixin dyes, which cannot be, in the form they present, obtained by any extractant. . These homologues are demethylated and demethoxylated bixin dyes, which probably formed from the desired bixin dyes in the country of origin of annatto seeds by fermenting the roachy fruit.
To increase efficiency and re-operate
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Maximum recovery, these residues are treated in accordance with the invention with dimethyl sulfate, so that the desired extractable bixin dyes are obtained. This methylation takes place, in practice, technically by passing water vapor through the extraction residues still containing chlorinated hydrocarbons.
In this case, in addition to hydrochloric acid and water, methyl alcohol is formed, which at the stage of its formation carries out the methylation described above. The insimethylated dyes can be extracted by the method described above, so that the yield of bixin dyes is further increased by 1 1/2 to 2%.
The concentrate according to the invention can also, in particular, be added with physiological amino acids and compressed into tablet form, which in turn can, depending on the purpose for which they are used, be mixed with fatty oils. Thus there is the possibility of shipping the concentrate in the form of tablets, while the amino acids present in said tablets have the advantageous effect of improving the butter or margarine, which must be colored.
In this connection, amino acids are particularly suitable, which the human organism cannot develop itself from simpler materials and which must therefore be supplied to it. Among these compounds, there may be mentioned, for example, valine and leucine.
