Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 fique d'environ 1,35 (par exemple une vinasse).On ajoute 8 parties en poids de méthanol puis on agite soigneusement le liquide aqueux et méthano- lique.On laisse alors la masse pendant 4 heures au repos pour obtenir la séparation des sels et des substances mucilagineuses.Au bout de ce temps on sépare le sel du liquide par filtration ou centrifugation puis on élimine le méthanol du liquide limpide par distillation.On envoie ensuite la solution exempte de méthanol à la pré-extraction;

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to a process for the concentration or enrichment of aqueous solutions of pyrrolidone-carboxylic acid and glutamic acid as well as their salts, for example of juice from sugar refineries, referred to briefly in the following as "vinasses". These vinasses generally contain 3 to 15% glutamic acid, preferably in the form of pyrrolidone-oarboxylic acid.

   Until now (these vinasses were subjected to hydrolysis in an acid or alkaline medium, almost always without prior purification, then after the decoloration, separation of salts and precipitation operations, glutamic acid in the more or less pure.

   This process has the disadvantage of introducing unnecessarily into the process the major part of the undesirable humic substances and hindering the recovery of glutamic acid, as well as other substances preventing crystallization, present in the vinasses, and of force them to be dragged in the form of dead weight in many operations. The presence of this dead weight also means that the liquid-liquid extraction process of stillage encounters in practice in the current state of the art insurmountable difficulties of industrial and economic order.We can undoubtedly in the laboratory, by a liquid-liquid extraction using an organic solvent, to obtain extracts which after continuous evaporation of the solvent give a residue largely free of inert substances but, with the extraction agents offered so far,

  sufficient yields can only be achieved by operating with a 40 to 60-fold excess of solvent and by leaving the different phases in contact with each other for many hours. Such a process would therefore be totally impracticable on an industrial scale for reasons The nature of the starting substances also has the consequence of making it impossible to extract using an extraction tower or centrifugal apparatus, two methods which precisely allow rational work against the current, because during the contact between the aqueous phase and the organic phase a separation of products takes place which not only make difficult or prevent the subsequent separation of the phases,

  but still cause clogging of the packing elements or blockage of the liquid pipes through which they pass ........ 4. 4. 4.

   The present invention provides a process which makes it possible to overcome these difficulties and economically obtain glutamic acid on an industrial scale. To this end, the vinasse is subjected, before extraction, to a preliminary purification intended to remove the humic substances and other substances preventing the crystallization that it contains.For this preliminary purification, it is often possible to limit oneself to slowly introducing and constantly stirring into the vinasse, if necessary acidified to a pH of 2 to 3, the organic solvent envisaged, in such quantity that the aqueous solution is just saturated with solvent, then to separate the precipitate formed, by filtration or centrifugation,

   after abandonment of the solution which is stirred from time to time. The slurry thus previously purified can then be subjected to the liquid-liquid extraction process by adding an additional quantity of the organic solvent already used.

   This way of operating is not always sufficient, however; it has therefore been found necessary to form the deposits as completely as possible before adding the organic solvent by adding to the vinasse, acidified if necessary for a pH 2 to 3, lower alcohol, eg methanol, then removing deposits, eg by filtration or centrifugation, the alcohol then being removed from the filtrate by distillation.

  When even this treatment does not make it possible to obtain a vinasse which can be extracted by the organic solvent, it is recommended to carry out another preliminary purification in the form of a pre-extraction, by extracting the filtrate using a at most partially soluble organic solvent

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 in water, preferably ethyl acetate, the solvent absorbing the humic substances still contained in the filtrate as well as the other substances preventing crystallization. While the vinasse thus previously extracted, and in very large part free of inert substances, can be sent to the main extraction after removing the ester by distillation, the ester is distilled off from the ethyl acetate extract and can be returned to the operating cycle .

   It was recognized that it was possible to use, for the extraction of the vinasses treated by one of the two methods indicated, a whole series of water-saturated organic solvents, either separately or in mixtures.

  Besides butanol, phenols, benzyl alcohol, furfurol, aniline and ketones are found to be suitable.

   The last mentioned solvents often have the advantage over butanol that they can be used in smaller amounts to give the desired extraction effect. In this connection, benzyl alcohol proves to be particularly advantageous. When using the preliminary extraction according to the invention, the solvent consumption is lower than when extracting non-stillage. By choosing the number of stages, minimum 3 and maximum 10, as well as the extraction agent, depending on the case, an extraction ratio of 1 to 15 can be achieved in the worst case. most favorable cases a ratio of 1:

  1.Stillage free of inert substances or dead weight then allows work against the current, in particular in countercurrent extraction centrifuges, in several stages, or in corresponding extraction towers, which makes Extremely fast extraction.

   The Applicant has also found that it could be advantageous, depending on the case, to subject the organic extract obtained by extraction, before the continuation of the treatment giving pyrrolidone-carboxylic acid and glutamic acid, to a new extraction with the. using alkali in aqueous solution, the extracted organic liquid can be subjected to a new extraction, either immediately or after distillation. The portion of organic solvent still in the new extract can be recovered by distillation, optionally fractionated. aqueous alkaline. The aqueous alkaline extract then obtained is treated in a known manner to have pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and glutamic acid.

   The following examples illustrate the invention without limiting it: Example 1 - Prior purification -
If necessary, by adding 32% hydrochloric acid and stirring, to a pH of between 2 and 3, 10 parts by weight of a concentrated solution of residual beet sugar juice with a specific weight of d. 'approximately 1.35 (for example a vinasse). The organic solvent intended for the subsequent extraction is then added slowly, with constant stirring, in an amount such that the aqueous solution is just saturated with the solvent. sufficient separation of salts and mucilaginous substances, the solution is left for 24 hours with occasional stirring. The precipitate is then separated by filtration or better by centrifugation and the clear liquid can be extracted immediately,

   already saturated with the organic solvent to be used.

  Example 2 - Pre-purification with pre-extraction -
If necessary, by adding 32% hydrochloric acid and stirring to a pH of between 2 and 3, 10 parts by weight of a concentrated solution of residual beet sugar juice of a specific weight are brought up to.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 fique of about 1.35 (for example a vinasse). 8 parts by weight of methanol are added and the aqueous and methanol liquid are stirred carefully. The mass is then left to stand for 4 hours to obtain separation of the salts and mucilaginous substances. At the end of this time, the salt is separated from the liquid by filtration or centrifugation and then the methanol is removed from the clear liquid by distillation. The solution free of methanol is then sent to the pre-extraction;

  the liquid obtained is extracted, approximately 10 parts by volume, 5 times with each time 10 parts by volume of an organic solvent saturated with water, preferably ethyl acetate. The acetate extract is distilled off. ethyl acetate in order to recover the organic solvent and the syrupy extract thus obtained is discarded. After having also subjected to a short distillation the aqueous solution pre-extracted with ethyl acetate in order to recover the ethyl acetate remained in solution, it is sent to the extraction proper.

  Example 3 - Extraction with pre-extraction -
The previously purified aqueous solution obtained in Example 1 or 2 is extracted using an excess of organic solvent saturated with water.

  With normal butanol as the solvent, this is best carried out with 15 times the amount of butanol and in three phases. By increasing the number of extraction phases, the excess of organic solvent can be reduced.

  This extraction can be carried out in the laboratory in separating funnels, and industrially in extraction towers or with the aid of extraction centrifuges.

   We operate suitably in several stages against the current.

  To recover the extractant, the raffinate remaining after the extraction (aqueous solution extracted by a short distillation, optionally fractionated) is subjected. After extraction, an organic extract is obtained, the treatment of which can be continued by re-extraction.

   For this, the organic extract is re-extracted with a volume of aqueous alkali less than its volume. This re-extraction is suitably carried out in several stages. The re-extraction in 3 stages requires a volume of alkaline water equal to 20% of the volume of organic solvent saturated with water previously required for the extraction, for this purpose the water going to the re-extraction is added beforehand. an amount of alkali (for example NaOH) sufficient for the pH of the extraction mixture to be between 9 and 10 What has been said for the main extraction in the laboratory or on an industrial scale is valid for re-extraction.

   After the re-extraction, the organic extractant can be used for a new extraction, and the new aqueous alkaline extract can be treated, after removal by short distillation of the organic extractant remained in solution, by known methods, to obtain glutamic acid and its derivatives.
