 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   REVENDICATIONS.

   Ayant ainsi décrit mon invention et me réservant d'y apporter tous perfectionnements ou modifications qui me paraîtraient nécessaires, je revendique comme ma propriété exclusive et privative :

20 - Canne plongeuse suivant 1,

   Plunger rods, currently used for emptying barrels, are designed to achieve automatic closing as soon as the emptying is practically completed and a certain quantity of air is sucked in at the same time as the liquid. For this purpose, a movable valve in translation in the rod, placed in principle in a position close to the vertical during its use, is likely to come to rest on a seat located at the free end of this rod for ensure its closure.

   During the emptying period, the end of the rod being applied to the bottom of the barrel to ensure the preliminary lifting of the valve, the latter is kept in the high position, thanks to the pressure drop of the liquid sucked through. the canneo As soon as the cane begins to suck air with the liquid, this pressure drop is reduced and becomes insufficient to maintain the valve which returns to its seat ensuring the automatic closing of the canneo
In rods of this type, the closing of the valve is not effected positively in a sufficient manner so that a simple impact on the rod during handling or the fact of raising this rod at the hand. horizontally, adding to the vacuum caused by the pump, opens the valve.

   The liquid contained in this cane then spreads on the ground which is dangerous in the case, in particular, of flammable liquid.

   The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and the improvement which is the subject thereof, consists, in its character of principle., In combining, with an automatically closing plunger rod, positive locking means of the valve which are put out of action by a manual action and on the contrary, automatically locked by the free fall by gravity of this valve
The locking means can be of any suitable type.
An advantageous embodiment consists in mounting on the valve, of generally ovoid shape, at least two O-rings of elastically deformable material which engage, in the locking position, on either side of a projection. internal annular, forming a seat,

   housed at the end of the canneo
The invention also extends to the objects of detail constituting this embodiment and in particular to the following points applied separately or in their various combinations: a) The lower O-ring, which passes beyond the annular projection forming a seat during the locked closure, is arranged in an annular groove the conical bottom of which diverges towards the free end of the rod. b) In the groove indicated in a), but by providing it with a greater width, it is possible to place two O-rings which successively play the role of a spring when these rings pass over the projection forming seat.

   c) The upper and lower rings can no longer be mounted on the valve, but in grooves formed in the rod, the valve comprising the annular projection engaging between them. d) The upper ring can be mounted on the valve and the lower rings in the rod or vice versa.

   Other particular points will appear in the following text made with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example only, and in which: - Figure 1 is a schematic sectional elevation of the rod

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 advanced diver in suction position.

   Figure 2 is a section, on a larger scale, of the lower region of the cane, the left part showing the valve resting simply on the seat and the right part showing it locked on this seat.
FIG. 3 shows, on a very large scale, the position of the rods or valve when the latter is locked.

   In the embodiment shown, the rod is formed by a tube 1, the free lower part of which carries an inlet nozzle 2, the upper part of this tube being extended by a handle 3 fitted to receive a plug valve. 4 and an indicator 5 opposite which can move an articulated finger or paddles 7. The rod is connected to a pipe 8 connected in particular to the suction of a pump. Inside the tube 1 can move, in translation, an assembly consisting of a valve 9, of generally ovoid shape, a rod 10 and two cruciform guides 11. A stop, constituted by a spring 12, is provided to limit towards upwards, the position of the movable valve assembly as will be indicated later.

   Reference will now be made more specifically to FIGS. 2 and 30. The nozzle 2 internally has an annular projection 13 forming a closing seat which, in the locked closed position and according to an important characteristic of the invention, is interposed between a tori ring. - That upper 14 and a lower ring 15; the O-ring 15 is combined, in the advantageous embodiment shown, with another O-ring 16.

   The O-ring 14 is engaged in a groove 17 and the rings 15 and 16 in a conical groove 18, these grooves being formed in the valve 90
It will be noted that the bottom 19 of the groove 18 is conical and converges towards the free end of the rod. In addition, this valve 9 carries a shank 20 which, in the locked closed position, protrudes outside. of the nozzle 2, a spring 21 normally protecting this tail 20 during handling or when the end of the rod is placed without pressure on the bottom of the container to be emptied.

   The operation of the improved rod is as follows: the rod being in the locked closed position (on the right in FIG. 2 and in FIG. 3), the user engages the rod in the barrel and applies the spring 21 against the barrel. bottom 22 thereof (Figure 1) o By compressing the spring 21, it brings the tail 20 'in contact with this bottom and causes the unlocking of the valve.

   Due to the vacuum created by the pump, to which the pipe 8 is connected, the liquid moves in the direction of the arrows (the valve 4 being open) and causes pressure drops in its movement and consequently , the movable assembly of the valve and its assembly which comes to rest against the elastic stop 12 as illustrated by FIG.
The weight of the movable assembly of the valve is calculated for the purpose indicated above but also to allow the fallback by gravity of this movable assembly and ensure the locked closure as soon as the rod sucks in air which corresponds to the end. for emptying the barrel
Locking is carried out as indicated below
The rod 16 arriving at a certain speed in contact with the projection 13 forming a seat,

   is braked and tends to move in the direction of arrow f (on the left in FIG. 2) relative to the groove 18, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 frustoconical bottom 19 allows, thanks to this slight displacement, a greater centripetal contraction of the ring 16 and facilitates the passage of the projection
13. A single ring such as 16 could be used, the ring 15 then being deleted. However, in the case of pumping certain products (gasoline, kerosene, etc.) it is necessary to use, for these O-rings, an elastically deformable material resistant to these products and the Shore hardness range is relatively small.

   In order to ensure operation without any failure, we combined, with the ring 16, a second ring 15 which increases the elasticity of the assembly and plays, relative to the ring 16, the role of a spring in the previously indicated operation. The second ring 15 then passes easily over the projection 13 owing to the fact that it is placed in the zone of reduced diameter of the groove 18. The assembly is then stopped by the ring 14, the projection 13 then being locked between the. ring 14 on the one hand, and ring 16 on the other hand.

   When the locking is carried out as indicated above, the vacuum created in the suction pipe of the pump tends to move the valve 9 and its movable assembly in the direction of the arrow Fo The rings 15 and 16 are then pushed back onto the conical bottom 19 and in the direction of the increasing diameters of this bottom thereby ensuring hermetic locking; in the most unfavorable case, the hermetic locking is provided at least by the ring 16, the flattening of which is limited by the ring 15.

   The passage of these rods 15 and 16 on the seat 13 can therefore practically only be achieved by acting strongly, in a positive manner, on the tail 20 of the valve.
It is obvious that the embodiments described and represented are given here only as an indication and not as a limitation. In general, any modifications or variants which do not change anything in the main characteristics explained above, nor in the aim pursued. , remain within the scope of the present invention.
