The invention relates to improvements made to the sections of rails and relates in particular to unitary rail sections of the single-rail type suitable for being connected to one another in series in substance in the manner described in Applicants' patent No. 518,098 of March 2, 1953.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of the rail sections so as to increase their adaptability and relative strength, and to provide a more rigid rail structure than that described in the relevant patent. consists of a mono-rail unit which is a modification of the mono-rail described and claimed in patent 518,098, characterized by a base or foot in the form of an inverted eye, and a head or mushroom of substantially circular section, which comprise between them and rigidly connected thereto, a series of vertical, spaced apart web-forming plates and a series of inclined and alternating tie-plates or struts.
The invention is described below with special reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a monorail section unit according to the present invention; andFigo 2 is a sectional elevation taken along line 2-2 of Fig.l.
Each single-rail section unit comprises an inverted U-shaped base or foot a, to the upper face of which is rigidly connected, by welding or other process, the lower edge of a series of plates forming web b and plates forming ties or struts, inclined c, the upper edges of which are welded, or rigidly connected in some other way, to the lower side of a head or head of a circular rail d, which may be solid or tubular. The web plates b are advantageously arranged one at each end of the unit and one approximately midway between the end plates, while the slanted tie or strut plates c are arranged on either side or alternating depending on the length of the rail unit.
The plates forming fasteners or struts are of substantially triangular conformation as clearly shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing, each of the triangular plates being secured to the head or head of the rail. It will be observed that this triangular conformation provides maximum support over the entire length of the head or mushroom head of the rail while satisfying the condition of minimum weight and serves to make the structure very rigid and stable in service without causing the - Cun significant increase in the weight of the unit compared to the structure described in the aforementioned prior patent.
At each end of the rail unit is provided a tenon and opening connection fulfilling a purpose similar to that described in the aforementioned patent, and the ends of the rail unit are made suitable for being supported by pedestals. adjustable transverse also as described in said prior patent.
The ends of the dangling wings of the base, or inverted U-leg, are omitted to provide convenient mounting of the ends of the unit to the transverse pedestals.
