Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   The invention relates to methods of preparing alkylaryl compounds by reacting benzene and propylene in the presence of an acid-reacting alkylation catalyst, such as aluminum chloride, to produce a reaction mixture containing mono-isopropylibenzene from di-isopropylbenzenes and higher poly-isopropylbenzenes, separating cumene from the mixture as product and separating either para-di-isopropylbenzene or meta-disopropylbenzene as another product, or separating the latter two as products .

  The reaction of benzene with propylene in the presence of an acid reacting catalyst is known. In addition, cumene and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 para-di-isopropylbenzene have acquired a certain industrial importance; meta-di-isopropylbenzene offers interest in the preparation of resorcinol via conversion to di-hydroperoxide followed by cleavage by treatment with acid. With regard to the future industrial development of these materials, in practice one is faced with the problem of producing each of these materials in the desired state of purity or high concentration in an economical manner.

   The findings associated with the present invention, relating to the resolution of the above problems and to objects achieved in accordance with the invention, include: providing an economical process for obtaining both cumene and para or meta-di-isopropylbenzene, or both, by reacting benzene and propylene in the presence of an acid-reacting alkylatin catalyst, recovering desired products and recycling other products or by-products; other objects which will appear as details or embodiments of the invention are mentioned below.

   In order to facilitate a good understanding of the inventions, the following specific, preferred embodiments will be described in detail.

    EXAMPLE j
In a suitable reactor having a corrosion resistant inner surface (eg glass, ceramic material, or corrosive resistant metal or alloy). provided with an agitation system such as a gas or mechanical device, and with a means for heating or cooling its contents, for example a coil or a jacket, a reflux condenser, a drip tube. 'introduction of gas and possibly an eva pipe to pass oration to make / the substances with low boiling point are introduced:

        @ 25 parts by weight of aluminum chloride
480 parts of benzene c.p. or thiophene-free)

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

12.5 parts of isopropyl chloride (or 25 parts of anhydrous hydrochloric acid as feed during the reaction time); then propylene (eg 95% propylene gas is absorbed in this mixture for a period of 1 to 2 hours - or until the desired amount of propylene is absorbed, with stirring and while maintaining the temperature in the range of about 70 to 8000, the feed rate is about 150 liters per hour at room temperature and under normal pressure.

   This temperature can be maintained either by passing cooling water through the indirect heat exchange system or by allowing the mixture to boil and reflowing its condensate if the temperature tends to rise too high. , or alternatively by passing water vapor through this system if the temperature tends to drop too low.

   The reaction mass is then re-fortified at room temperature, for example indirectly by means of cooling water, then it is poured into about 500 parts of water; then 100 parts of about 18% aqueous hydrochloric acid are added and the resulting mixture is stirred for about one quarter of an hour. Then we let the mixture stand, and so two layers are formed. ' The hydrocarbon top layer is recovered, washed with about half its volume of about 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide and then with about the same volume of water; then it is dried by removing the water by azeotropic distillation with the hydrocarbon present at a lower boiling point.

   The hydrocarbon layer is then fractionated in an efficient column. The cumene fraction is recovered as product,
 EMI3.1
 and recovering either eta ... di-isopropylbenzene (P.E. 203, 20) 6 and para-di-isopropylbenzene (P 3, B, 70, 40) or both, oomm. separate products. The meta moiety may contain a small amount of the ortho isomer, if any is present in the mixture of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 reaction; however, this is not technically detrimental.

   Higher aromatics, mostly triisopropylbenzene, and other lower aromatics can be recycled. A small amount of hexane as a by-product formed in the reaction system can be removed if desired.

   Using a propylene: benzene molar ratio of 1: 4 and removing only cumene and para-di-isopropylbenzene from the system, all other aromatics being recycled, 14 parts by weight of para-. di-isopropylbenzene and 40 parts of cumene per 100 parts of the hydrocarbon mixture produced,
Practically similar results are obtained if cumene and meta-di-isopropylbenzene are the only aromatic products separated and recovered.

   EXAMPLE 2 The procedure of Example 1 is followed except that the propylene: benzene ratio is 1.0, and that 9 parts of para-diisopropylbenzene or 8 parts of meta-di-isopropylbenzene are recovered with 50 parts. of cumene per 100 parts of the hydrocarbon mixture produced.

    BXWLE
The process of Example 1 is followed except that the propylene: benzene ratio is 0.8 and 6 parts of para-di-isopropylbenzene or 12 parts are recovered. of meta-di-isopropylbenzene together with 50 parts of cumene per 100 parts of hydrocarbon mixture produced.

   The process of the invention can be carried out by charge, intermittently or continuously, preferably according to the latter mode.

   In a continuous process, aluminum chloride and isopropyl chloride are charged to the reactor together.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 ment with benzene and propylene, part of the reaction mixture being continuously removed and the catalyst and aromatic hydrocarbons obtained as by-products being continuously recycled.

     The top layer or hydrocarbon is continuously separated from the removed material, washed with hydrochloric acid solution and then with dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide (5-15% or other similar alkaline material, then with water. The washed hydrocarbon is then fractionated to remove a cumene fraction as a desired product, and the hexane formed as a by-product can also be removed if desired.

   A di-isopropylbenzene moiety can be removed and then further fractionated to separate para-di-isopropylbenzene as a product. Higher alkyl aromatics and ortho-and metal-di-isoproylbenzenes can be recycled.
If desired, a meta-di-isopropylbenzene fraction can be separated and the para-di-isopropylbenzene can be recycled.

     Conveniently available raw materials containing propylene, which are preferably free from other unsaturated compounds, can be used. The reaction system can be vented to allow the escape of lower boiling point hydrocarbons which do not react immediately. The benzene introduced should be free from other aromatic compounds, be low in sulfur and preferably be free from sulfur; , it may contain some paraffins which can be separated in the system.

   Results comparable to the previous ones are obtained with various modifications, such as the following: the catalyst can be any alkylation catalyst of the type.
Friedel-Crats or with acid reaction, for example acid: hydrofluoric, boron trifluoride, aluminum chloride, etc. The propylene: benzene ratio, in molar ratio, can be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 in the range of about 0.7 to 1.5 moles of propylene per mole of benzene, preferably 0.8 to 1.4.

   Higher ratios give a relatively uneconomical system from the point of view of cumene production, while lower ratios give an uneconomical system from both the point of view of cumene production and the production of the desired diisopropylbenzem as. -product.

   The reaction temperature can be in the range of 8 to 150 ° C., preferably. 50 to 110 c for the aluminum chloride catalyst. The reaction time may be 0.1 to 10 hours, preferably 0.5 to 4 hours.

   High temperatures are generally linked to shorter times; the catalyst, the temperature and time conditions are chosen to give the sulfurized conversion at the desired flow rates. Additional aluminum chloride catalyst (determined, for example, by an in-situ control alkylation reaction, using a sample of the recycled slurry product as catalyst, for catalytic activity can be added as needed. Spent catalyst is treated with water containing 15 to 30% hydrochloric acid to break up the catalyst complex, and the resulting hydrocarbon phase is separated and reused in the system.
