<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

. In self-propelled single-wheel track vehicles, in particular, it is common practice to have the motor unit between the wheels, more or less close to the rear wheel, depending on whether the driver is required to rest his feet laterally on the engine block or whether a free floor has been provided between the seat and the handlebars to facilitate installation of the driver and improve driving comfort. In machines of the latter type, a crankshaft motor oriented transversely to the direction of travel is generally preferred and a transmission parallel to the engine and which drives the rear wheel using a chain.
However, when, in the latter embodiment, the entire motor unit, including the rear wheel, is fitted with a closed fairing, which makes it necessary to provide a

cooling fan: special for the engine, generally air-cooled, the overall width of the machine has exaggerated dimensions. This is also true, in particular, when the engine has several cylinders and a blower of the dimensions provided accordingly.
On the other hand, the longitudinal arrangement of the engine, practiced in non-faired motorcycles, could only be applied to so-called open-frame vehicles at the cost of an inconvenience, because the floor reserved for the driver should then be used, at least. largely, to receive the engine. In such an arrangement of the motor unit, which must occupy only a reduced position, it is important, on the one hand, that the oscillating rod for the driving wheel is sufficiently long, so that, during a travel important of the springs, the joint must bend only a few degrees of angle and, on the other hand, that the parts of the motor unit are easily accessible after removal of a cover covering the - seems from this group. In particular, the V-belt must be able to be replaced without difficulty.
Based on the foregoing, the invention aims to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks and to establish an advantageous arrangement of the power unit in single-wheel track vehicles, preferably those which include an open frame and in which the rear wheel, articulated elastically using an oscillating connecting rod, as well as the motor unit located between the wheels, are covered with a fairing. To this end, the invention makes use of an engine with a crankshaft oriented in the direction of travel and provides, between this engine and the rear wheel, in accordance with an arrangement considered to be new, a known V-belt transmission. per se, the belt of which is oriented transversely to the direction of travel and from which the rear wheel is controlled by means of a cardan shaft.
While the known V-belt transmissions were all oriented in

The transmission - which presents unequal advantages to date, both because of its ability to adjust progressively, and by its possibilities of economical execution - can, by the nature of its construction, be accommodated in a partial space in the direction of the axis of rotation, while its overall length may be appropriate to the admissible width for a single-wheel track machine. However, until now, single-wheel track vehicles, equipped with motors oriented in the direction of the step, only included gear transmissions, so that it was only possible to bring the motor closer to the rear wheel. 'by placing the transmission laterally to this wheel, in the oscillating rod itself.
Gold? this arrangement has inevitable drawbacks due. the fact that the unsprung masses are very large in the vicinity of the rear wheel, which consequently reduces the performance of the machine.
According to the invention, the cylinder or cylinders of the engine are horizontal or form an angle with the horizontal. This has the effect not only of lowering the center of gravity of the machine as much as possible, but also of leaving a valuable and accessible location for the auxiliary devices. A lighting dynamo, possibly with a starter, can be placed above the engine, by connecting them to the crankshaft by a belt. It is also possible to fit the engine cooling fan and the lighting dynamo to a common control shaft, which allows the length of the motor unit to be reduced to a minimum, since the fan can also be / in this way above the engine, without additional expense.

the primary shaft and the secondary shaft of the transmission, as well as the joined crankshaft and the cardan drive shaft, The crankshaft and the cardan shaft are located on two opposite sides of the longitudinal median plane of the machine.
Furthermore, it is advantageous that the primary shaft and the secondary shaft of the V-belt transmission are located at different levels. This either makes it possible to further reduce the width, outside of the entire machine, or to make the pulleys larger, and therefore to extend the adjustment limits.
Another improvement can be achieved by arranging the V-belt transmission and clutch in front of the engine. Thus, the belt can be removed from the pulleys after having removed the fairing. It is also advantageous to provide a reduction mechanism behind the V-belt transmission, in the vicinity of the engine.
This makes it possible not to exaggerate the dimensions of the bevel gear provided on the rear wheel.
In addition, this arrangement of the power unit per.met 'to attach thereto a relatively long swing arm, intended to receive the rear wheel. This offers the advantage - that despite a large elastic travel of the drive wheel, the universal joint only has to bend by a few degrees of angle and thus only experiences a slight wear.
The simplest solution consists in having the rear wheel swinging arm directly supported by the first motor using the bearings known per se. The lighting dynamo can be constituted by a dynamo-starter combination and be arranged above the cardan joint and gearbox mechanism provided behind the transmission. trapezoidal belt.

2 and the rear wheel 3, while the propulsion unit, consisting of a motor 4 and a progressive transmission with trapezoidal belt 5, is disposed in the vicinity of the rear wheel 3, in front of the latter.
The motor unit 4, 5 and the rear wheel 3 are covered with a fairing 6 shown in horizontal section @ and whose indeformability allows it to absorb the major part of the payload of the machine.
In order to be able to have a floor 1 with maximum dimensions and to reduce the wheelbase - this last feature being of great importance for the characteristics of the machine, the motor unit 4, 5 is brought as close as possible to the rear wheel 3 elastically articulated to the frame by means of an oscillating arm 7, the arrangement being such that the crankshaft 8 of the engine is oriented in the direction of travel and is coupled directly to the primary shaft 9 of the V-belt transmission '5 oriented transversely in the direction of the market, On the other hand, the crankshaft 8 is located laterally in the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle, while the secondary shaft 10 of the belt transmission tr.

The latter simultaneously constitutes the upper countershaft of the reduction gear 29. The lower receiving shaft, not shown, of the reduction gear 29, is joined by a universal joint 30 followed by a shaft 31 which controls. the rear wheel 34 through the bevel gears
