Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to fluorescent lamps, the luminescent material of which is a "phosphor" consisting of a mixture of phosphates and calcium and / or strontium fluoride, a manganese compound and an antimony compound.

   It has already been proposed to incorporate such luminescent materials into the glass of a discharge tube, ensuring that they maintain or restore their proper structure in the glass.

   It is also known practice to mix the abovementioned compounds in certain particular proportions in order to obtain luminescent products.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The usual dense-floral-material preparation methods do not make it possible to obtain a standardized color in the trade while retaining the maximum luminosity, and trial and error are used.

   Moreover, it has not yet produced in practice a low-pressure mercury discharge nozzle of the shade "white 6500" or "daylight white" containing only a material as defined above.

   To obtain such luminous effects, it was necessary to use tungstates mixed with powders composed of phosphates and fluorides or chloride of calcium and / or strontium, a manganese compound 03 and a compound of 'antimony.

   Such mixtures are expensive and change color as they finish.

   The above luminescent materials can be represented as a solid solution of oxides, halides, P2 05 and optionally other ingredients.

   The present invention relates to fluorescent lamps whose luminescent material or "phosphor" consists of a solid solution containing predetermined proportions of P2 05, calcium oxide, calcium fluoride, manganese chloride. divalent and antimony oxide.

   These proportions are liable to vary depending on the color, but are subject to the condition that the molar sum of the halides and oxides is equal to 3.215 to within 1% per mole of
P2 05, The amount of calcium fluoride is approximately 0.282 mole per mole of P2 05.

     The amount of antimony trioxide @ between 0.002 and 0.02 mole per mole P2 05.

   The three aforementioned characteristics are not responsible for the tint and rather determine optimum light conditions. The invention is not limited to critical compositions of optimum brightness, but at the same time provides the conditions

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 necessary to obtain powders which, when incorporated in low pressure mercury discharge lamps, radiate in a black body shade.

   According to the invention, the amount of manganese chloride varies depending on the color depending on the amount of calcium oxide as shown in the diagram of the accompanying drawing.

   This diagram comprises on the ordinate the amount of manganese chloride and on the abscissa the amount of calcium oxide,
Per mole of P2 05, the quantity of manganese chloride varies between 0.02 and 0.10 mole and the quantity of calcium oxide varies from 2.80 to 2.92 moles.

   According to the invention, a suitable method of manufacturing these powders consists in calcining a finely ground mixture of predetermined proportions of bibasic calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, divalent manganese chloride, and oxide of antimony. These proportions are liable to vary depending on the color so that the molar sum of all the ingredients is equal to 3.215 to within 1% if the amount of bibasic calcium phosphate is equal to 2 moles.

   Preferably, this molar sum of all the ingredients varies according to the shade and is equal to within one thousand to 3.214 for the "white 3500" shade, to 3.208 for the "white 4500" shade and to 3.220 for the "white 6500" shade. ".

   The amount of calcium fluoride is approximately 0.282 moles per 2 moles of bibasic calcium phosphate.

   The antimony trioxide is added in an amount greater than the proportion of antimony contained in the finished product, since a difficultly controllable amount of antimony evaporates during calcination in the form of chloride. The evaporation of antimony is all the greater as the quantity of chlorinated compounds, in particular manganese chloride, is higher.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   It is therefore appropriate to add a larger quantity of antimony for higher chloride contents. In order to obtain good powders, it has been found that 0. 008 to 0.02 moles of antimono trioxide per 2 moles of bibasic calcium phosphate give the best results.

   The amount of calcium carbonate varies depending on the color between 0.80 and 0. 92 mole and the amount of man- chloride. thickness varies between 0.1 and 0.02 mole with respect to two moles of bibasic calcium phosphate.

All products in the mixture must be of very high purity. This is particularly true for the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 phosphate, the main constituent of the mixture.

   In order to obtain reproducible results, and to ensure a high quality light output of powders and lamps, the Applicant has used the particularly pure phosphates prepared according to the Belgian patent filed on February 7, 1956, to : "Process for the production of bibasic alkaline earth phosphate. And luminescent powder containing such a phosphate".

   The constituents of a powder are mixed, then very finely ground, in a hammer mill. After grinding, the constituents are mixed again to prevent any separations which might have occurred during grinding. The product thus prepared is placed in crucibles of fused silica with a capacity of 2 to 3 liters and covered with lids of the same material. Calcination takes place at a temperature of about 1170 0 for 4 to 5 hours. After cooling in closed crucibles, the mass obtained still undergoes a slight grinding ge, and is ready to be applied in lamps or other fluorescent devices by a method known per se.

   The lamps equipped with the powders of Examples I, II III above have standardized tints of the black body.

  Example I corresponds to the shade white 3500 ", II corresponds to the shade" white 4500 "and III corresponds to the shade" white 6500 ".

   The colors of the black body described are not limitative. On the contrary, they can be adjusted to any intermediate value by varying the proportions of the comfort constituents to the values indicated by the diagram,
It is also possible to extrapolate the diagram to the neighborhood of the range given by the aforementioned examples. The tolerances for the colors being quite wide, it is admissible to deviate a little from the precise values. ,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

It will easily be understood that it is possible according to the invention to produce a homogeneous range of powders for practical use, whereas the known methods only produce certain shades.

   The powder coated lamps, the composition of which is determined according to the attached diagram, have a brightness of about 60 lumen / watt after 100 hours of operation.

   As mentioned above, fluorescent powders according to the invention can be used in low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps. This is due. the fact that the discharged into mercury vapor emits ultraviolet light of wavelength 2537 A which excites the fluorescence of these powders.

   These powders can also be used to coat the ampoules of the discharge tubes in high pressure mercury vapor.

   This application is advantageous, because said powders have a very marked fluorescence upon excitation by ultraviolet rays of wavelength 3650, emitted by discharge lamps in high pressure mercury vapor. The color of this fluorescence is much yellower and the intensity is weaker than the color and intensity of the fluorescence excited by the far ultraviolet (2537 1 ...). In addition, the color and intensity of this fluorescence is maintained even at a high temperature.

   It is known that powders prepared according to the prior processes and also consisting of calcium phosphate and fluoride, a manganese compound and an antimony compound do not emit fluorescent light when they are excited by the ultraviolet light 3650.

   The invention therefore makes it possible to increase the luminous efficiency of discharge lamps in high pressure mercury vapor and to correct very harsh blue light by a yellowish component.
