<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>

The present invention relates to improvements in fluid heating apparatus, such as water heaters, steam generators, boilers and the like and more particularly to apparatus of the type in question comprising a thermostatic control device for regulating the power supply. of the said apparatus.
A disadvantage of known thermostatic control devices is that their operating characteristics are subject to change during use. Thus, for example, known immersion type thermostats are prone to scale formation and exposed bimetallic elements are prone to carbon deposits.
The present invention therefore relates to an apparatus for heating a fluid comprising a thermostatic device for adjusting the fuel supply to the apparatus, this device having a positive action, being simple to manufacture and to install. to assemble, being easily adjustable and not having the disadvantage mentioned above.
The invention therefore relates to an apparatus for heating a fluid, comprising a combustion chamber and a tubular system arranged so as to be subjected to the heat of combustion and in which the fluid to be heated passes. comprising a circumferentially continuous tubular ring, a support arranged so as to be substantially unaffected by the heat of combustion and to which the support the continuous ring is rigidly connected at a point on its circumference by a fitting extending through the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
insulating wall of the apparatus, an actuating element fixed to the continuous ring at a point on its circumference spaced from its point of connection to the support,
which element extends through the aforesaid insulating wall and is movable in response to the expansion of the ring, so as to actuate a device mounted on the support, the latter device serving directly or indirectly to adjust the supplying fuel to the apparatus, so as to control the temperature of the heated fluid to a predetermined value.
It will be understood that the thermostatic action of the apparatus depends on the differential temperature of the continuous ring and of the support, which necessarily gives rise to relative displacements between them and does not depend on the use of materials having coef - different expansion ratios. Thus, the continuous ring and the support can be of materials having the same coefficient of expansion, although, if desired, these members can be made of different materials having different coefficients of expansion.
The continuous ring may be formed by at least two adjacent turns of a spirally wound part of the tubular heating system, fixed to each other, for example by welding, so as to form in fact a continuous ring. In a preferred embodiment, the spiral wound coil of the tubular heating system forms a water wall for the combustion chamber continuously and two adjacent turns of said part, which preferably are located. -in the hottest part of the combustion chamber are welded to each other, so as to form the continuous-ring.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
@
The aforesaid support preferably takes the shape of a second ring surrounding the continuous ring and, preferably, substantially. concentric to and last ..
This second ring may generally have a U-shaped section or the like. The structure of the apparatus is such that the support or second ring remains relatively cold, in view of the fact that the combustion chamber is isolated therefrom by the insulating wall of the apparatus.
Thus, for example, while the continuous tubular ring may be exposed to combustion temperatures ranging from about 1200 to 3000 F, the support or second ring will only be exposed to temperatures ranging from room temperature. normal from about 70 F to about 200 F, depending on the degree of heat conduction through the insulating wall of the device. It will easily be understood that with differences in temperature between the continuous ring and the support or second ring of the order indicated above, these members can both be made of the same material, for example. low carbon steel, and should not be made from materials with different coefficients of expansion.
It is clear that by using part of the tubular heating system as the main part of the thermostatic control device, a very sensitive and positive control of the fuel supply is obtained, since the final expansion of the ring is obtained. tubular is directly affected by the passage of fluid through it, regardless of temperature variations in the combustion chamber.
The movement of the actuating element carried by the continuous ring can be used to cleave 66.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ways to adjust the fuel supply to the appliance. Thus, in one embodiment of the invention, the actuating element serves directly to actuate a fuel control valve shown on the support or second ring. In a second embodiment of the invention, the actuating element serves to actuate a switch mounted on the support or second ring, which itself regulates the fuel supply, for example by controlling a solenoid actuated fuel valve or valve.
In the case where the support is in the form of a second ring surrounding the tubular ring, spacers may be provided between the two rings which each extend through the insulating wall of the apparatus and which by an appropriate circumferential arrangement allowing an initial determination of the relative displacement characteristic of the element and of the actuator.
Thus, for example, when the device and the actuating element are arranged opposite one another on a diameter and when two spacers are arranged opposite one another on a second diameter perpendicular to the first, it is clear that, when the tubular ring expands, the action of the spacers will consist in deforming the support or second ring, so as to move the device inward and to increase the relative displacement of the device and of the actuating element. If so.; Sire the spacers may have a length such that at least one of the two rings is initially deformed from its normal shape.
Other advantages and features of the invention will emerge from the following detailed description.

Figures 1 and 2 show that the turns of the water wall section are conta ct. The turns 41 and 42 are thus effectively made impossible to move with respect to one another, while they expand and contract as a whole during heating and cooling. The support ring 49 has an opening 50, into which extends a cap screw 51, which is received in a threaded hole 52 in the spacer 46. The screw 51 is tightened firmly, ae so that the support ring 49 is rigidly fixed to the tubular ring R at one point.

the latter at its ends, as indicated at 59 (figure b). The element 58 has an opening 60 (Figures 2 and 3), in which is mounted a small flanged sleeve 61, which serves as a guide for the rod 55. The rod 55 extends so as to be able to slide, beyond the sleeve 61 into a housing 62, which serves as a mounting device for a fuel control valve or valve generally designated by the reference numeral 63. The housing 62 has a cyclic portion. lindrique 64 at one end of which is welded, as indicated at 66, a flat plate 65.
This plate 65 'has an opening 67 in which the sleeve 61 extends, to align the housing 62 with the support ring 49. The plate 65 is attached to the part 58 by a pair of bolts 6 $, as shown in FIG. 3.- It will be noted that the cylindrical part 64 of the housing 62 extends through an opening 69 made in the sleeve 13, this opening allowing access to the bolts 68. The opening 69 is, in turn, closed. by a plate 70 fixed to the sleeve 13 by screws 71.
A ring 75 (Figure 4) has an edge shaped so as to allow that ring to extend partially into the outer end of the cylindrical portion 64 of the housing 62 to which said ring 75 is welded, as shown. at 76. The fuel control valve 63 comprises a base 77 and a body 78 between which is interposed a flexible diaphragm 79, the assembly of these parts being ensured by a series of head screws 80. The base 77 of the valve is applied against the ring 75 and the entire valve is mounted on this ring by several relatively long head screws 81.
Thus, the fuel valve 63 is mounted in a fixed position with respect to the support ring 49 at a point diametrically opposite to the or-

The body 78 also comprises a chamber 90 in the vicinity of the diaphragm 79 and a cylindrical jaw 91 is placed in this chamber around the rod 85.

63.
The rod 85 has an extension comprising a cylindrical portion 93 at its inner end, this extension being conical over part of its length, as indicated at 94. The valve body 78 also comprises an inlet chamber 95 and an outlet chamber 96 with an annular seat 97 mounted between them. One end of a pipe 101 is connected to the bottom of the tank 100 at 102 and the opposite end of this pipe is connected to the inlet 103 of a conventional fuel pump 104. A usual T-fitting 105 has one of its ends connected to the outlet 106 of the pump. The T-fitting 105 is connected to the pipe 35 leading to the nozzle or nozzle 33 of the burner. The other side of the T-fitting 105 is connected by a pipe 107 to a usual fitting 108 (figure 4) mounted in a threaded opening 109 communicating with the inlet chamber 95 of the valve or valve 63.
The body 78 of the valve has a threaded opening 110 communicating with the outlet chamber 96 and a fitting 111 of the usual type is mounted in this opening. One end of a pipe 112 is connected to the cord 111 and this pipe is connected at its other end at 113 to the upper end of the reservoir 100 (FIG. 1). The body 78 of the valve or valve also has a threaded opening 114 (figure 4), which is formed by a usual plug 114a.
The valve actuating rod 55 is threaded at 115 (FIG. 4) at its outer end and an internally threaded stop 116 is mounted on the threaded part 115.
The stop 116 is arranged to come into contact with the element 8b, so as to determine the position of the rod 85, so as to control the bypass of fuel through the valve 63. The stop 116 can rotate with respect to the rod 55, so as to allow an appropriate initial adjustment of the rod 85 relative to the seat 97, a nut 117 carried by the threaded part 115 of the rod 55 making it possible to lock the rod 85 in the correct position.

the fluid in the heating system 2 can be at a temperature between about 1000 F, when the apparatus is used to heat water, and a relatively high temperature of several hundred degrees, when the apparatus is used to heat water. The apparatus is used to generate steam under high pressure. The liquid or fluid at the above temperatures is in direct contact with the internal surface of the heating system 2 including the tubular ring R. On the other hand, the outside of the tubular ring R is subjected to the temperature produced. by the fuel burnt in the combustion chamber 8, this temperature being able to vary between approximately
1200 and 3000 F.
On the other hand; the valve support ring 49 or fuel valve is exposed only to ambient temperatures or at most to the heat which has passed through the layer of insulating material 12 and has entered the chamber. air circulation space 14, so that the temperature of the ring 49 will vary between the normal room temperature of about 70 F and about 200 F- Assuming that the heating system 2 and the ring of Support 49 are made of similar materials, especially low carbon steel, "the ring portion R, subjected to relatively higher temperatures than the support ring 49, will expand much faster.
It will be understood that since the tubular ring R 1 and the support ring 49 are fixed relative to each other by the spacer 46 and the screw 51, the tubular ring R will, upon expansion, cause the valve control rod 55 to move away from the spacer 46. On the other hand, the expansion of the relatively cool support ring 49 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
546251 substantially negligible, such that the valve or fuel valve 63 remains substantially stationary, but its rod 05 is moved to the right against the force of the spring 92, by contact of the stop 116 with the element 88 Such movement of the rod 85 will allow an increased passage of fuel from the inlet chamber 95 to the outlet chamber 96, so that the fuel, at the lees,
to be driven by the pump 104 into the pipe 35, is allowed to bypass the nozzle 33 through the pipe 107, the valve or valve 63 and the pipe 112; to finally return to the reservoir 100. Thus, when the temperature difference between the tubular ring R and the support ring increases, the rod 85 of the valve 63 will be actuated, so as to open the latter more or by pass more fuel to the tank 100, so that the fuel supply to the nozzle or nozzle 33 of the burner is automatically reduced. The conventional spring loaded shut-off valve 35a completely interrupts the supply of fuel to the burner 33, when the valve 63 bypasses or diverts the maximum amount of fuel to the tank 100, during a period when the temperature is excessive.
On the other hand, if the temperature difference were to decrease, the contraction of the tubular ring R would cause withdrawal of the rod 55, so as to allow the spring 92 to return the valve rod 85 towards the end. left, when looking at Figure 4, so as to reduce the bypass of fuel through and valve 63 / thereby causing an increased volume of fuel to be supplied by pump 104 to line 35. the pressure in line 35 exceeds the spring load applied to valve or valve 35a, this will open and allow fuel to flow to the gas.

burner 33 through line 35.
The above-described action of the tubular ring R and the support ring 49 is illustrated schematically in FIG. 5, in which the cold state of the tubular ring R is shown in solid lines and the heated or expanded state. of the tubular ring R is shown in phantom.
The expansion of the tubular ring R relative to the support ring 49 has been greatly exaggerated, to demonstrate the principle in question, but assuming that this is so, it will be seen that the plate 53 carrying the rod 55 of valve control is moved a substantial distance from the solid line position to that shown in phantom, causing the rod 55 to move a corresponding distance The range of motion of the rod 55 relative to the valve 63 can be modified or controlled in various ways, so as to obtain any desired action from the fluid bypass valve 63. Thus, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3,
two additional spacers 46a can be mounted on the tubular ring R on a diametrical line BB perpendicular to the line on which the spacer 46 and the rod 55 are mounted. The interior spacers 46a are mounted on plates 44a welded to the tubular ring R in the same manner as the plate 44 previously described. the outer end of the two spacers 46a has a shoulder 46b, which is in contact with the inner face of the support ring 49, and a cylindrical part 46c which extends beyond the shoulder 46b in an elongated slot 46d made in the ring 49.

It emerges from Figure 3 that, during a expansion of the tubular ring R, this ring tends to move the control rod 55 to the right along the diametral line AA, in the manner previously determined. written with reference to Figure 5. It will also be seen that the spacers 46a acting along the diametrical line BB will tend to deform or elongate the support ring 49 along said diametral line, so that the part of the tubular ring 49 carrying the valve 63 will tend to move to the left or in the opposite direction to that of the movement of the actuating rod 55.
Thus, the expansion of the tubular ring R can be caused to cause a compound movement, in which the rod 55 moves in a direction such that the valve 63 opens so as to bypass fuel, while the support ring 49 moves the valve 63 in a direction such that a similar result is obtained. In this way, a greater degree of overall opening of the valve or valve 63 can be obtained for a given temperature difference than when the valve 63 is held relatively fixed and when only the rod 55 is moved. .
Figure 6 schematically illustrates another

modified arrangement of the tubular ring R and the support ring 49, so as to provide an even greater relative displacement between the stem 55 and the valve
63 than that obtained by the use of additional spacers. It will be remembered that the spacers 46a are in contact with the support ring 49, when the parts are in the cold state, without producing any distortion or deformation of the ring 49.
In Figure 6, spacers 46A are arranged on the diametrical line BB, but have a length slightly greater, or 1/16 of an inch, than the space provided between the rings, so that the support ring 49 is initially deformed and changes from a truly circular shape to a somewhat oval shape (the ring 49 being less rigid than the tubular ring the main axis of the oval coinciding with the diametrical line BB This provides an initial state comparable to that in which the support ring 49 is deformed by expansion of the tubular ring R.
Thus, it is clear that when the support ring 49 is in a pre-distorted state when it is cold, the thermal expansion of the tubular ring R will increase the distortion of the support ring 49, so that the part of this ring carrying the valve 63 ae will shift to the left to a greater degree per unit of thermal expansion of the tubular ring R than if the ring 49 had not been initially distorted. In other words, a greater relative movement between the actuating rod 55 and the valve 63 can be obtained with the arrangement shown in Figure 8 than with that illustrated in Figures 3 or 5. It will also be understood. that the length of the spacers 46A can be altered, so as to produce any relative movement

desired between the stem and the valve 63.
Not taking into account the modified action which can be obtained in the control of the valve or fuel valve 63 by the use of the spacers 46a and 46A, the degree of opening of the valve can be modified by adjusting the stopper. 116 as described above, and in order to facilitate this adjustment, the cylindrical part 64 is cut, so as to form an access opening 118, to allow the adjustment of the stop 116 and the nut. locking 117, so as to vary the position of the stop 116 along the threaded portion 115 of the rod 55.
FIG. 7 illustrates an embodiment of the invention, in which a usual switch or switch 120 normally closed replaces the aforementioned valve or valve. The switch 120 is connected in circuit with a solenoid controlled common type valve 121, as explained in more detail below.
Thus, the valve or valve 63 has been replaced by a relatively simple hollow bracket 122, fixed to the year 75 by head screws 123. In the bracket 122 is provided a bore intended to receive a stressed rod 124. by a spring. An arm 125 extends from console 122 and switch 120 is adjustably mounted to said arm by screws 126. Switch 120 has a pin 127 in axial alignment with rod 124 and arranged to be influenced by this rod and actuated in order to open said switch.
One contact of the switch 120 is connected to a conductor 128 and its other contact is connected by a conductor 129 to one terminal of the solenoid valve 121, the other terminal of this valve being connected to a conductor 130. The wire 128 and the driver 130
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
are connected to contacts of a main switch 131 from which electric current is supplied by main lines j2 and 133.
The solenoid valve 121 is mounted in a fuel supply line 134 terminating at a burner 135, which may be of a type suitable for burning gas or liquid fuel. The solenoid valve 121 is held by a spring in the closed position, so as to interrupt the supply of fuel to the burner and its solenoid must be energized to cause the opening of said valve. If the difference in expansion between rings R and 49 becomes such that rod 124 is brought into contact with pin 127 and switch 120 is opened, the circuit to solenoid valve 121 will be interrupted and the valve will be de-energized, which will interrupt the fuel supply to the burner 135.
Upon an adequate change in temperature conditions, the rod 124 moves away from the pin 127 and the switch
120 closes automatically so as to re-energize and open the solenoid valve 121 so as to allow fuel to reach the burner again
135 Thus, the fuel supply will be controlled automatically according to the differential expansion of rings R and 49. Solenoid source 121 can be closed at any time Independently of the automatic control, by opening the switch
131 by hand.
The switch control device of Figure 7 has the advantage over the fuel bypass valve control device that it can be used both in the case of gas powered appliances and in that of gas powered appliances.

oil, while it serves as a common control device for gas and oil comoninsin appliances.
Although some preferred modes of using the differential expansion of the tubular ring R and the support ring 49 to control the fuel supply have been described and illustrated, it is clear that However, modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the following claims, the invention being, moreover, not restricted to the specific construction details of the preferred embodiments described herein. memory.
