<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

to complex chromium compounds, in which one chromium atom is linked to two dye molecules, is not possible by known methods, or is only possible in unsatisfactory yields, so that a preparation of these chromium compounds on an industrial scale has not hitherto been envisaged.
Now, it has been found that such complex chromium dyes can be prepared from o-alkoxy-o'-oxyazo dyes, by a reaction proceeding undisturbed and with excellent yields, by treating the dyes of starting, at fairly high temperature, in the presence of organic solvents, with hexavalent chromium compounds which are subjected to reduction. Solvents which are themselves capable of reducing the hexavalent chromium compounds are advantageously used, otherwise reducing substances, for example salts or esters of sulfurous anhydride, of sulfuric acid, of sulfuric acid are added. thiosulfuric acid or arsenious anhydride, as well as carbohydrates soluble in the solvent used, such as mono- and disaccharides.
As suitable solvents, mono- or polyvalent alcohols, as well as their esters and etheres, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, butyrolactone, ethanolamines and carboxylic acid amides can be used. Retorts composed of hexavalent chromium, there may be mentioned, by way of example,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mono- and dichromates of alkali metals. Suitable for the new chromating process are all mono- or disazo dyes, which contain at least once the o-alco-o'-oxyazo group in the molecule; it is also possible to use mixtures of two such azo dyes.
These dyes are obtained by mixing, for example, amino-1-zlcoxy-2 benzenes with compounds whose position, in which the coupling takes place, is close to a phenolic or enolizable group. Both the disazo compounds and the couplers, or azo components, can be further substituted at any positions, as will be apparent from the following examples.
For the production of the dyes obtained by the new process, it is true, in a large number of cases also, from the corresponding o-o'-dioxyazo dyes. However, the production from o-alkoxy-o'-oxyazo dyes is preferable in all cases where the corresponding o-o'-dioxyazo dyes cannot be obtained, or only in unsatisfactory yields, as a result of the lowest coupling energy of diazotized o-aminophenols to o-aminoanisols.
The chromium complex dyes prepared according to the new process are suitable for coloring organic solutions or plastic masses, for example Zapon varnishes and common varnishes, articles in cellulose esters and ethers, as well as for bulk dyeing of acetate rayon. te or other spun artificial fibers. However, they are especially suitable for dyeing polyamides or polyurethanes, as well as animal fibers, in a neutral or weakly acid bath.
Disazo compounds and couplers shown

in the following examples, can also be mixed with one another in other proportions and be transformed, according to the new process, into said complex chromium compounds, both in the case of homogeneous products and of mixtures.
The parts shown in the following examples are parts by weight.
EXAMPLE
EMI3.1
20 parts of the azo dye obtained from diazotized 1-aminor2-methoxy-5-methylbenzene-4-sulfonamide and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5- are introduced into 150 parts of diazotized 1-aminor2-methoxy-5-methylbenzene-4-sulfonyl ether. pyrazolone. The mixture was heated to 1200, then added over an hour with stirring 5 parts of finely powdered crystallized sodium dichromate. The reaction mixture is heated for 6 hours at 1.31..1-1350, then the complex chromium compound formed is separated by pouring the mixture into 1500 parts of water to which has been added, to complete the precipitation of the dye, 150 parts of sodium chloride.
The separated and dried dye dyes the wool in a weak acid bath in red shades with very good solidity properties.
Similarly, the following azo dyes can be converted into their complex chromium compounds
