<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The invention relates to steering handlebars for cycles in general and in particular for motorcycles, and it applies more particularly to those of the latter called scooters.
It is known that in cold weather the drivers of such machines have the habit of covering the handles of their handlebars with kinds of funnels made of lined or simply waterproof fabric, in order to protect their hands from the frozen draft caused by the speed. - of the vehicle. This protection, which is certainly effective, however, has the notable drawback of being unattractive, and above all of considerably hampering driving of the scooter. Indeed the different

The object of the invention is to produce a handlebar that protects against bad weather and the cold allowing easy operation of the controls grouped around the two handles. The handlebars according to the invention can advantageously carry the various measuring devices generally mounted on such devices. Finally, it can be used as a safe for small items such as handbag, road map, etc.
The handlebars according to the invention are essentially characterized in that it is constituted by a continuous transverse envelope, the ends of which, open towards the rear, form two lateral housings provided with gripping means for the rider's hands.
In the preferred embodiment, and which as such is more particularly referred to herein, the casing is made of sheet metal, stamped so as to form two lateral housings separated by a central housing, and it comprises a soft part. Light alloy alloy forming a box, through which the handlebars are attached to the tube which is inserted into the steering column.
It is easy to understand that the two side housings can receive steering handles around which the controls of the cycle members can be grouped. The central housing receives the casing in cast alloy secured to the casing in pressed sheet metal by screwing. This box, closed by a folding door, reinforces the assembly and is secured to a suitable lower boss through which the

The handlebars according to the invention also comprise various particular arrangements which will be discussed at greater length in the body of the description. These provisions relate in particular to the mounting of the controls inside the side housings.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics that it presents and the advantages that it is likely to provide:
Fig 1 of this drawing shows in perspective a scooter provided with a handlebars established according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view on a larger scale of the front of this handlebar.
Fig. 3 is a corresponding perspective view from the rear.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of said handlebar along IV-IV (fig. 5).
Fig. 5 is a front view showing the rolled edge of the sheet.
Fig. 6 shows the internal arrangement of the various maneuvering controls.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of these commands.
Fig. 8 and 9 show in section the upper rolled edge of the sheet, respectively along VIII-VIII and IX-IX of fig 5.
In fig, 1 there is shown a motorcycle, of the so-called "scooter" type, provided with a handlebar according to the invention. As usual, this handlebar is mounted on the steering tube 1 connected to the fork 2, and on which is attached an electric projector 3.
The handlebars in question have a sheet metal casing 4,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
stamped so as to form two .Lateral housings rounded off by a central housing of generally semi-cylindrical shape, slightly raised and at more pronounced angles.
As shown in fig. 3 and 4 the central housing receives a metal part of molded light alloy forming a box 5, fixed to the sheet 4 by means of screws 6. The front wall of the latter comprises a concave part 5a intended to leave room for the conve- rear xity of the projector 3 (fig. 1). The upper part of the box 5 is formed by the sheet 4 which further comprises at this location perforated bosses in which are mounted measuring devices 7 such as counting, speed, ammeter, etc ... whose connection s 'is carried out from inside the trunk 5. The latter is closed at the rear by a folding door 8 pivoting on a pin 9 and operable using a closing button 10.
Finally, the lower wall of this box, slightly inclined downwards from rear to front, comprises on its lower face a cylindrical bos sage 5b inside which is fixed the tube 11 intended to be mounted inside the tube. direction 1. The boss 5b is fixed to the tube 11 in any suitable way, for example by pushing in, by pins, by screwing, etc. The lower rear edge of the t8le 4 is tightened between said boss 5b reinforced by a rib 5c and a metal base 12, forced into the tube 11 and screwed with the case 5.
The side housings of the sheet 4 receive the handles 13 and 14 carried by side tabs 5d molded with the box 5. These handles, covered with rubber or similar coverings, open outwardly on the front of the sheet 4 by orifices, respectively 4a and 4b, through which the brake cables and sheaths 15 pass, de-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
clutch or the like, coming from the control levers 16 articulated at the rear end of each handle 13 or 14. The orifices
4a and 4b are advantageously hidden by decorative plugs, made of plastic for example, in the center of which holes are made for the passage of sheaths or cables 15.
The handlebars established according to the invention can be provided with several other controls for the various components of the scooter on which it is placed. In freezes 6 and 7, there has been shown in particular a rotating handle device acting on a cable, connected to the carburetor for example. This device comprises a sleeve 17 mounted to pivot on the handle 14 and controlling a chan- nelled connecting rod 18 connected by a yoke 19 to a pin 20 carried by a tab 5 integral with the case 5. The other end of this pin pivots in the boss. 5b of the box 5 and carries a wheel 21, the knurled periphery of which is braked by a friction system, consisting for example of a ball pushed back by a spring.
The wheel 21 is integral with an angled arm 22 on which the end of the cable coming from the carburetor is anchored, while the sheath of said cable is inserted into a chimney 23. By turning the sleeve 17, through the intermediary of the connecting rod 18 is rotated the axis 20 which thus separates the arm 22, and pulls a length of cable.
It is easily understood that this system can be mounted on each of the two handles; the box 5 moreover comprises a tab 5d on each side, just as the boss 5b is provided with two opposed journal holes. In this way, the user can choose his mounting, and he can thus provide two rotating handles, one for the throttle, the other for the ignition advance for example.
We also know that it is currently frequent to operate the gearbox by means of a command available.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
mounted on the handlebars. For this purpose, the guides according to the invention is provided with a tube 24 journalling in tabs 5f and 5g of the box.
5 and at one end of which is mounted an operating lever 25 terminated by a ball 26; the lever 25 can also be made integral with a rigid wire 27 bent so as to be able to be operated easily with a finger. It is also possible to provide a depression in the side of the trunk 5 so that a point integral with the lever 25 engages therein at the position of the corresponding lever, for example corresponding to the neutral point of the gearbox. the opposite end of the tube 24 is provided with a cable stop arm 28 cooperating with a duct chimney 29 fixed on the sheet 4.
Inside the tube 24 is threaded a pin 30, one end of which carries a cable stop arm 31 cooperating with a sheath duct 32 while the other end is made integral with a control 33 made of rigid metal wire to which we give an appropriate profile. This control can advantageously be used, for example, for adjusting the air intake in the carburetor (improperly called a "starter" in common parlance).
The arrangements described above allow the production of a protective handlebar in which all the controls can be operated from inside said handlebar, that is to say without having to take your hands out of the housings intended to receive them. .
Of course, a very large number of possible commands have been described, but in practice the user only implements those which are suitable for the particular case considered.
In order to prevent rainwater from flowing inside, the rear edge of the sheet 4, above the box 5, is half-rolled as shown in 4c (fig. 8), so as to form a channel collecting the water expelled by the air flow used to move the vehicle; along the side housings, the channel is closed and
