Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

On

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

0,92.

   <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The polymerization of ethylene under high pressure is the subject of numerous patents and publications. More recently, attempts have been made to operate for ethylene and others; olefins under relatively low pressures and in the presence of catalysts. Among these, mention should be made of the organic aluminum compounds which have been protected by numerous patents.

   The process for the polymerization of ethylene makes it the object of the present invention consists in the action of a mixture of an organic compound of an alkali metal and a compound of a metal of the 4th group of the periodic system on ethylene gaseous or dissolved in a suitable solvent at a pressure below 100 atmospheres and at a temperature above 10 C.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   As organic alkali metal compound, use is made in particular of amyl sodium prepared from 1-chloro-n-pentane and metallic sodium in an organic solvent. As the compound of a metal of the 4th group, titanium tetrachloride is used, for example. The amount of catalyst used and the amylsodium: titanium tetrachloride ratio have an importance on the speed of the reaction and the qualities of the polymer obtained. The constituents of the catalyst can be introduced into the reaction medium either as a mixture or separately before or during the polymerization.

   The products obtained according to the present invention by polymerization of ethylene are solids with a density greater than 0.93, the melting point of which exceeds 11,590 and the molecular weight of which is generally greater than 50,000. These polyethylenes are characterized by a very low content of methyl groups, as it is possible to demonstrate by infrared analysis. In addition, they exhibit marked crystallinity on X-ray diffraction analysis.

   The reaction products, after removal of the catalyst, can be used as such or fractionated with suitable solvents so as to obtain products having both higher melting points and greater molecular weights.

   The molecular weights shown in the examples were calculated conventionally based on measurements of the intrinsic viscosities of solutions in tetralin at 130 ° C. Melting points were determined by inflection in the cooling curve as a function of time. The densities were determined at 20 C / 20 C by the flotation method.

   The following examples relate, unless otherwise indicated, to pure ethylene. The invention does not, however, exclude mixtures of ethylene with, in a smaller amount, propylene. The last example relates to this case.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Example 1 - ''.: Em A solution of 4 g of titanium tetrachloride in 150 cm3 of isooctane is introduced into an iron tube, resistant to pressure and with a capacity of 250 cm3. A suspension of 8 g of amylsodium in 50 cm3 of pentane is added thereto. The tube is connected to an ethylene cylinder and a pressure of 50 atm is admitted. The temperature rises from 20 to
30 C, then slowly descends to 2090. The pressure of 50 atm. is maintained for 17 hours at 20 C. The polyethylene formed, soaked in isooctane, is dried under vacuum, washed with methyl alcohol, then hot with hydrochloric acid diluted to
5% to dissolve the catalyst. The polymer is then washed with hot water until neutral, then drained and dried. We
This gives 30 g of white polyethylene with an average molecular weight of 225,000.

   Melting point: about 125 C.

   Example 2.

   The conditions of Example 1 are observed, but the amounts of the catalyst are as follows: 8 g of titanium tetrachloride and 2 g of sodium amyl. 3 g of polyethylene insoluble in tetralin and with a melting point of 12020 are obtained.

   Example 3.

   Same conditions as in Example 1, except for the temperature: 80 ° C., the time: 5 hours, and the solvent: pentane. 25 g of polymer of 225,000 molecular weight, a melting point greater than 130 ° C. and a density of 0.95 are obtained.

   Example 4.

   The same amounts of reagents as in Example 1 are used. The temperature is maintained at 2090 for 14 hours, then at 80 ° C. for 5 hours. We thus obtain
40 g of polymer which was treated as follows:
The product is hot extracted with isooctane.

   The soluble part (2 g), precipitated by acetone, has a molecular weight of 9,100 and a melting point of 105 C.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

The insoluble part is extracted hot with xylene for 2 hours. The soluble part (2 g), precipitated with acetone, has a molecular weight of 27,200 and a melting point of 115 C.

   The insoluble part has a molecular weight of
530,000 and a melting point above 130 C.

  Example 5.

   The ethylene polymerization can be carried out at atmospheric pressure in a 4-necked flask, fitted with a stirrer, a thermometer, a condenser and a tube for the introduction of ethylene. In a balloon
2 liters with 4 tubes, we start by putting a solution of
4 g of titanium chloride in 500 cm3 of isooctane and a suspension of 8 g of amylsodiumdanslOO cm3 of the same solvent. Ethylene is passed through the flask for 24 hours. The temperature is maintained at around 25 C without having to heat continuously. Finally, 3 g of washed and dried polymer are obtained, with a molecular weight of 80,000 and a melting point of 125 C.

  Example 6.

   Under the conditions of Example 1, ethylene, containing 10% propylene, was subjected to polymerization.

   22 g of polymer with a molecular weight of approximately
100,000, melting point 112-117 C and specific gravity
0.92.
