<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a catamenial band as well as a method and a device for its manufacture. These bands generally consist of a compress of absorbent material and of a sheath which surrounds it, of gauze or other material, which has at its ends fixing means intended to be attached to a belt, or the equivalent, who holds the tape.
Until now these fixing means were usually made by folding the ends of the sheath and knotting them, or also by twisting these ends to form a cord which is bent to make an eyelet, the free end being held annually. synthetic tape or equivalent, folded around both sides.
The invention aims to make the manufacture of these tapes

more economical and simpler and relates in particular to the said ends of the strip. According to the invention each of these ends is provided on both faces #, with a layer of synthetic or plastic material, or 1- * equivalent, which e- ;. intimately united at these ends, for example glued or welded to the fibrous material * so that at this location the fibers, threads or the material, are joined together and reinforced. Either before, or after, or during this meeting, holes are drilled in this synthetic material which thus constitute solid fixing eyelets.
A great advantage of the invention is that the ends of the strip can be produced continuously in a machine, in a simple way. For this purpose, it is possible for example to bring each end of the strip between two plates or ribbons of synthetic material which, as mentioned above, are then joined, by welding or the like, at the ends of the strip and so also; between eax.
Instead of constituting perforated plates, the layers of synthetic material can also form a bead at the ends of the strip. This bead is then attached to the seam or other support means, using a similar fastener. ble to a suspender clip.
Instead of using plates or ribbons in material ,. synthetic, it is also possible to coat or impregnate at least the outer layer of the ends, with plastic which is optional. ment pressed in the form of a wafer or bead.
Another subject of the invention is a machine for implementing the method.
The accompanying drawings illustrate several strengths of the embodiment of the invention. Fig. 1 shows in perspective an embodiment of the strip. Fig. 2-shows on a larger scale an embodiment of one end, the flg. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 2 and fig. 4 a section through the line IV-IV of FIG. 2. FIG. 5 schematically shows a

faith-me of realization of a machine for the fahr: I.eat1.on. dec cxtr <J7Il t /. of the band, and fig. 6 shows lino part of the tape losing the manufacturing process.
The strip of FIG. 1 is constituted by a compress surrounded by a sheath, for example made of gauze, the ends of which are reinforced by layers of synthetic or plastic material 2 and pierced with holes 3. Such a layer of synthetic material, in the form of a plate. , is applied for example on each face of the end which is thus enclosed between these plates of synthetic material, which is then joined by welding or gluing.
Hole 3 is drilled at an appropriate time in the manufacturing process and serves as a fixing eyelet. The synthetic material layer 2 can optionally be extended by a part 2a into the strip, in order to reinforce the latter, but this is not essential. The layers of synthetic material 2 applied to the ends can also be joined together by means of a thin flexible connecting sheet of synthetic material, or the equivalent, which covers one side of the strip and serves as a protection against humidity on the outside.
Figs. 2 to 4 show another embodiment of the synthetic material layers 4 applied on both sides of the material 1a, to the ends of the strip which are thus intimately united with the synthetic material layers between which they are trapped. The layers of synthetic material can optionally be thicker at the edges 7 in order to have greater resistance. The hole 5 may be in the form of a buttonhole, with a wider part 6, to facilitate hooking to the belt clip. Figs. 2 and 3 also show an embodiment with a bead 8 provided alone or at the same time as the hole 5.
The bead can also be produced by a part of plastic material placed around the end la of the strip, for example in the form of a plastic sleeve or of a plastic tape surrounding the part la.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Different kinds of ticks or plastics can be used, as long as they are flexible and can easily be glued or welded to the ends of the strip. If a synthetic material impregnation is provided, a suitable synthetic material solution is used.
The machine shown schematically in fig. 5 consists of two grippers or claws 13 which each take a strip of synthetic material 9 and slide it above and below the part 10 of the strip located between these strips of synthetic material. The bands 1 still hold together, at this stage of manufacture, by an intermediate part 1b (fig.6) which corresponds to the part 10 shown in fig. 5.
The bands holding together are moved longitudinally by the machine and when the intermediate part 1b reaches the place where the synthetic material tapes 9 extending transversely to the longitudinal direction of the band are located, the tapes 9 are pressed with the aid of 'tools 11 against part 10 of the strip, while under the effect of a high frequency field or the equivalent these tools solder the ribbons to each other through the material of the strip, then knives 12, 12a cut the two ribbons and the grippers 13 are withdrawn without dragging these ribbons, to pick them up further and drive them again towards the strip.
The bands are then transported to the next workstation, where the finished tapes are deburred, stamped to the desired shape and perforated, after which the bands which held together are separated from each other.
The machine can also be built differently.
