<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a device with a filling head, more particularly intended for filling pressure-resistant containers with gas under a high pressure.
The invention particularly aims to allow the. providing a filling head for completely filling pressure-resistant containers with gas under high pressure, this head being of inexpensive construction and efficient operation.
The invention is embodied in a device 'for

the filling of containers with a gas under a high pressure, comprising a support provided with a work table and a piston surmounted by a rod, a pusher with a tubular lower end fixed to this rod, a tubular element having an internal shoulder surrounding this pusher and cooperating by friction with it, several closing fingers fixed on this shoulder, - this tubular element having an external groove, an annular seal housed in this external groove, of the tubular element, a sleeve arranged around the tubular element and having at least one orifice for the inlet and the outlet of the gas, as well as a bevelled internal surface in which a circular groove is formed,
a seal housed in this groove, and members fixed to this sleeve in order to ensure its adaptation in a sealed manner to the container.
The description which will follow, given with reference to the appended drawing given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.

gases under high pressure, which are opposed to each other to simplify the representation.
In the drawing, a support 10 substantially L-shaped, comprising a base 11 and a vertical element 12 integral with the previous one, is fixed on a work table by bolts 18.
The base 11 carries an element 14 provided with a notch in the form of the V or U, intended to center a receptacle 15 resistant to high pressures.
The vertical element 12 carries a fixed table 16 and a pair of flanges 17 serving to hold a cylinder and a piston of the usual type 18, actuated by a gas.
The table 16 has a substantially U-shaped notch, accommodating a filling head comprising a cylindrical sleeve 19 (FIG. 2).
The actual filling head comprises the cylindrical sleeve 19 which is operated by hand (which can however be lowered, if necessary, by a hydraulic, pneumatic or electric device). If the sleeve 19 is lowered by hand on the shoulder of the container 15, this sleeve bears two opposite axes forming pivots 20.
A manually controlled oscillating element 21 is fixed on these axes 20.-
The oscillating element 21 is constituted by a pair of lever arms 22 of suitable length, spaced apart from one another, the pivot axes 20 being disposed substantially in the middle of the length of these lever arms.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
so that their free ends 23 can rest against the underside of the fixed table 16 (Fig. 3), which consequently lowers the sleeve 19 on the appropriate shoulder 24 of the container 15.
,
The oscillating element 21 has two vertical arms 25, each of which is preferably secured to a lever arm 22 by the end of the latter opposite the free end 23 (FIG. 1). A handle 26 is fixed to the upper part of the arms 25. As shown in FIG. 1, a downward pressure on the handle 26 causes the latter to tilt around the axes 20, until the ends 23 of the lever arms come to rest against the table 16.
A further downward angular displacement of the oscillating element causes the sleeve to slide downwards, the vertical arms 25 coming to occupy a horizontal position and being placed on either side of the container 15, the sleeve 19 being applied hermetically on the shoulder 24 of the container 15 by the annular rubber seal 27, housed in the bevelled surface 28 of the mouth of the sleeve.
The sleeve 19 has a gas inlet orifice 29 and an outlet orifice 30. These orifices 29 and 30 open into threaded end pieces 31 to which a flexible conduit of the usual type resistant to high pressures can be connected.
The sleeve 19 has an internal circular bearing lip 32. The annular rubber seal 27
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
is fitted by recessing in a suitable groove in the bevelled surface 28. The internal cylindrical surface of the cylindrical sleeve la% may have a second groove if necessary, in which a second rubber seal 33 is placed.
The device, object of the invention, is used to introduce an inert gas such as az @@ in a container containing sodium bicarbonate with the removal of dry powder, with a view to use for the slat. against the fire. The preferred gas pressure is about 10.5 kg / cm2.
In order to obtain the certainty that there is a gaseous pressure of the order of 10.5 kg / cm 2 in each container at the time of sealing, the closing operation is carried out at this pressure. by the fact that the nitrogen which escapes passes through the orifice 30 and the flexible duct 31, to enter a valve 35 of the usual type, previously adjusted so as to operate under the pressure in question of 10.5 kg / cm2, this gas then reaching the conduit 36 and then, under the indicated pressure, into the cylinder 18, in which it triggers the operation of sealing the container.
The sealed closing mechanism of the container may be of the usual type and include mechanical fingers for gripping and holding an accessory with a dip tube. But the. mechanical retention of the dip tube is preferably promoted by the action of vacuum.

The pusher 43 has a tubular neck 46 of the usual type which, during a downward movement, causes the thicker ends of the fingers 42 to expand, so that these ends engage under the lip of the added cover 47 and the mouth 48 of the container,

The pusher 43 is subjected to the action of the helical spring 51, which surrounds it in the usual way. The tubular element 38 has towards its lower part an outer groove in which is housed a rubber seal 53.
As shown in fig. 2, the rod 44 carries a side end piece 54 which can be connected to a suction duct 55.
To operate the device acting -by

vacuum according to the invention, the cover 47 of the container and the dip tube 50 joined together are grasped using the fingers 42, to which is added the effect of the vacuum prevailing in the tubular bore 56, then the assembly is introduced downwards into the container 15.
The oscillating arm 21 is then lowered, which sealingly applies the sleeve 19 to the container 15.
Nitrogen is then introduced under a pressure of the order of 10.5 kg / cm2 into the receptacle 15 through orifice 29. After filling the receptacle with gas, this pressure equal to 10.5 kg / cm2. approximately acts on the valve 35, set beforehand, then on the piston 18. The displacement of the piston 18 causes the downward movement of the rod 44 and of the tubular plunger 43, as well as of the tubular element which it retains. by friction, until the. plate or flange 39 abuts against table 16, which is mounted in a fixed position.
Any further downward movement of the element 38 is then prevented, but the pusher 43 continues its movement, so that the neck 46 pushes the fingers 42 outwards in order to achieve the sealed adaptation of the cover 47 on the container. 15, around the mouth 48, while compressing the spring 51.
At the end of the stroke of the pusher 43, the gas acting on the piston 18 is evacuated and the helical spring 51 urges the pusher 43 upwards with the element 38 held by friction. We then let go of the oscillating arm 21, and we remove the container filled with gas, which is now

Although a particular embodiment of the invention has been described here, modifications can be made to the details mentioned, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
This also relates to the method of filling a pressure-resistant container with gas under high pressure. It is not, moreover, limited to the filling of receptacles containing only a material in the form of a dry powder used for fire-fighting, and it can be applied to any dry powder, and even to containers partially filled with a liquid formed by the gas under high pressure introduced into the container.
