Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

The present invention. relates to a method and apparatus for changing the shape of metal tubes.

US Pat. No. 2,111,695 of March 22, 1938 describes a process for making T and cross tube fittings from normal commercial tubes, filling the tube with a plastic material, placing the tube and its filling in an extrusion die and then applying pressure to the ends of the tube and the infill to force the tube and infill into the die.

The process described in this patent has been found to be very useful and has been applied successfully, but it has imitations in that the tube and the filling both advance slowly and at the same speed. This caused some filling to be squeezed out of the tube while squeezing the tube.

and filling in the desired shape.

In the pending patent application entitled "Method and apparatus for reshiping metal Tubes" H of series 326,931, filed December 19, 1952, a method and apparatus is described for producing shape changes in metal tubes by filling the table. with a plastic material and then applying pressure to the end of the tube and the filling material to force the change in shape of the tube, and in which the rate of advance of the material of filling in the tube and the rate of advance of the tube by these pressures is coordinated to provide the correct amount of filling material to produce the change in shape and the desired amount of tube to provide the surface area necessary to cover the tube. changed shape.

Although the method described in this application has been successfully developed, it has several limitations. When it is applied to put the metal tube into shapes for which the change of shape is excessive or irregular, it has been found that the material of the tube may be too thin or may even break during shaping. : For example, in the manufacture of parts such as' '' Y to 45 fittings, T's with long legs, or symmetrical Y's, the tube material may be too thin or may break.

The present invention therefore sets out to provide a method and an apparatus by which the shape of metal tubes can be changed without excessively thinning or breaking them.

Briefly, the method of the present invention comprises filling the metal tube with a plastic and then applying pressure to the end of the tube and the plastic to cause:; nI 'force a change in the shape of the tube, coordinating the rate

stretched or pressed. for example, the tube can be made of leather, aluminum, nickel, mignnesium and alloys of these lethals, steel, brass, mutai monel and nickel-chromium alloys and stainless steel. The process is also applicable to seamless tubes and welded tubes.

The term "tube" or "tubular" as used herein includes tubes of various cross-sectional shapes, such as circular square and polygonal.

A suitable filler material 11 is provided in tube 10. The filler material may be pre-melted and poured into tube 10, or else melted in place in tube 10. The filler material should be solid and should be able to. flow under pressure. In addition, the. filler material must not cause physical or chemical changes detrimental to the metal with which the tube is made. In practice, the Woods metal (alloys of bismuth, lead, tin and sometimes cadmium} has been found to be very suitable, as established in the aforementioned US patent. Lead alone or an alloy of lead (55%) and bismuth (45%) are also satisfactory fillers.

In addition, it has been found that rubber of the commonly referred to as "swelling" type gives satisfactory results.

The tube 10 containing the filling material 11 is placed in a die 12. In the die shown, it is desired to form a Y-fitting at 45, and the die consequently has coaxial cylindrical cavities 13, 14, communicating with a branch or cavity 15. The axis of the cavity 15 forms an angle of 45 with the axis of the cavities 13, 14. The diameters of the cylindrical cavities 13, 14 and 15 are substantially equal. Tabular plungers 16 and 17 rest on the ends of the tube 10.

A piston 22 is arranged r? T.la the. cylindrical cavity 15 and comprises a piston rod 23 exiting to the outside and passing through a fixed support 24-. a force that gradually increases.

As the material of the tube and the resplendent side is forced out into the cavity 15 of the limb, the material in the tube which expands in the cavity of the limb 15 tends to thin; and this tendency is greatest in the region of the closed end of the repressed branch. If this branch were allowed to expand freely, the rounded end would rupture. The elastic resistance of the piston 22 serves to delay the discharge at the end point of the discharge part to allow the side walls, 3 to fill the cavity 15 of the branch.

The tendency of the tube to thinned excessively is also reduced by pushing the tubular plunger 17 to a greater axial length than the tubular plunger 16 (see Fig. 3), so that part of the upset branch which has. the larger wall area receives sufficient tube material from the adjacent end of the tube. The resulting shaped tube does not have excessively thin sections which can be easily broken.

At the start of the shaping operation, the end of the piston 22 is preferably at a short distance of 1 (opening of the cylindrical cavity 15 in communication with the cavities 13, 14, so that its resistant action cannot be occur until the tube and filling have advanced a small distance into cavity 15. The distance and compression of the spring depend on the nature of the metals and the dimensions of the metal tube.

In the change of shape of the tube described above, it is seen that the part of the tube and the filling which are at the beginning of the expansion cavity undergoes a change of surface and a change of volume. This increase in the volume of the filling material, and this increase in the area of the tube is provided by the part of the filling material.

It will be observed that the pressure is applied to the ends of the wt4-è: re forint nucleus and * to the 6J .. '"trerosities of the iclatter of the tube by means of plungers. Plungers move at relative speeds such as The rate of displacement of the filling material is proportional to the rate of change of the area of the tube material. The use of plungers in this manner is an important feature and has real advantages over the use of hydraulic pressure for this purpose. It avoids the need to plan future

geurs. For example, a load of thirty tons or more can be easily applied to them by means of hydraulic or mechanical presses tired. It would be very difficult to achieve a lipid force of about thirty tons on the ends of the core material. In addition, the use of liquid at these high pressures is extremely risky.

The initial tube before its change: one hundred of shape. Is shown in fig. 4. After the shaping, the tube looks like shown in. fig. 5. Note that the open ends of the tube of FIG. 5 which has been darkened to a sufficient amount of material on their inner surfaces, at 30 and 31 so that it can be cut and reamed to form surfaces 32, 33 respectively ;, shown in fig. . 6. The branch 34 can be cut by removing the closed end to give it the desired length.

The branch 34- can also be cut off. As can be seen in the sections of Figs 5 and 6, the thickness of the wall of the tube, the shape of which has been modified, has no weak points or zones.

An example of the dimensions of a 45 fitting which has. been successfully produced by the present process is as follows:
Initial tube Length 146 mm.

   Wall thickness 1.6 mm.

     Final tube dimensions:
