Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   The present invention relates to the? electric furnaces of the molten salt bath type. The object of the invention is to provide an installation in which the electrodes can be changed continuously without having to interrupt the operation of the furnace. It also aimed to reduce heat losses by thermal conductivity of the electrodes. The invention consists of an oven in which the electrodes penetrate into the bath at a level below the surface of the bath so as to protrude into the latter only for a limited distance.

   The invention also consists of a means for intermittently advancing the electrodes as their inner end is consumed, and it further consists in the determined embodiment described below.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 in the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of part of an electric heat treatment furnace of the salt bath type.

   Figure 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an end view of the electrode and its connections.

   In electric furnaces of the molten salt bath type, the electrodes enter the bath to introduce the necessary electrical energy therein. The contact between the electrode and the bath usually has a considerable area so as to allow a relatively high current to pass at a relatively low voltage. Although a large contact area has certain advantages, there are also drawbacks such as, for example, the need to stop the furnace to renew the electrodes. In addition, there is too much energy lost to the outside due to the thermal conductivity of the electrodes.

   By virtue of the improved construction according to the present invention, only the inner ends of the electrodes are in contact with the bath, which greatly reduces the surface area of the contact surface. This solution -reduces losses through thermal conductivity, but the electrical energy must be introduced at a higher voltage. Further savings are achieved by reducing the diameter of the electrodes and further increasing the voltage. As the electrodes do not encounter any obstacles at their inner end, they can advance in the bath as they burn up and this advancement can be done by introducing successive sections of electrode placed end to end. without having to interrupt the operation of the oven.

   As FIG. 1 shows, an electric heat treatment furnace A of the salt bath type has two opposite closing walls A1 and A2. Electrodes B pass through said walls through openings preferably opposite one another.

  These electrodes must not enter the bath far beyond

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 internal fpces of the closure walls and therefore only have a contact surface limited to the bath. As they are consumed, the electrodes can be introduced further into the bath intermittently and these operations can be repeated indefinitely.

   In the execution truss shown, the means serving to make the electrodes penetrate into the corner furnace takes a beam C, for example a U-section beam, placed outside the furnace below the electrode, with its inner end anchored to a support frame D. ' A bracket
E is adjustably attached to the joist and its vertical branch E 'rises behind the outer end of the electrode. A. screw F, screwed into branch E ', carries against a metal block G itself applied against an insulating block H in contact with the end of the electrode.

   The wings of the U-beam 'are drilled, at distance to distance, aligned openings C' in which a key.C2 can be slid on which is slid a nozzle 83 which is housed in the hollow of the bracket. e so as to retain it in its adjustment position. So the screw F is. to adjust the position of the electrode as its inner end wears and when the adjustment limit of this screw is reached, the key C2 is removed and the bracket E is moved so as to align it with another pair of C3 openings. The key is then reinserted and the screw is used as before to advance the electrode.

   It should be noted that an external part of the electrode is between the wall of the furnace and the most internal adjustment position possible of E ',
F, G and H. On this part is mounted the device serving to supply the electrode with electric current and to dissipate the heat coming, by thermal conductivity, from the part of the electrode taken in the wall A '. . This part is necessary to prevent the bath fluid from escaping through the clearance between the electrode and the surrounding wall, and the cooling must be sufficient to freeze the fluid when it is still in the wall.

   This device for supplying current and 're-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 cooling is constructed as follows: This outer part of the electrode is surrounded. of a tube I wound in a helix which leaves a precise space between itself and the electrode. This space is occupied by a series of metal conductors J arranged longitudinally with respect to the electrode and whose outer ends are joined by a plate J 'with a flexible electrically conductive cable J2. The helical tube is elastic and the diameter of the turns is normally such that the electrode can be moved longitudinally in the space surrounded by the helical tube and the J conductors.

   If, on the contrary, the opposite ends of the propeller are rotated around its axis in the direction required to tighten. the propeller, a tightening pressure is applied to the conductors J and through them to the electrode B. This tightening can be carried out using the tangential extensions 'I' of the opposite end turns of the 'helix, completed by the side rods 12 extending laterally from the upper ends of these extensions, by the uprights 13 fixed to the beam C and by the adjustment screws 14 connecting the rods to the uprights.

   In this way the helix 1 and the conductors J can be firmly clamped on the electrode so as to ensure good electrical and thermal conductivity; and whenever it is necessary to move the electrode, this clamping pressure can be released by means of the screws 14. Insulators 15 separating the extensions I 'from the rods 12 prevent the loss of electrical current. by these links. The helical tube communicates by flexible pipes K with a suitable source of coolant, the latter passing through the tube.

   With the construction described above, the operation of the furnace can be maintained without interruption under constant substance conditions for a much longer period of time than was possible with the older constructions.
