Description

<EMI ID=1.1>

ment remarquables .

La réaction des fonctions isocyanate du diisocyanate

<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=4.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>

<EMI ID=6.1>

<EMI ID=7.1>

<EMI ID=8.1>

<EMI ID=9.1>

<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=11.1>

296 g. d'anhydride phtalique (2 mol.), 116 g. d'acide maléique

<EMI ID=19.1>

<EMI ID=20.1>

<EMI ID=21.1>

<EMI ID=22.1>

<EMI ID=23.1>

<EMI ID=26.1>

<EMI ID=27.1>

<EMI ID=28.1>

Exemple 5 -

<EMI ID=29.1>

<EMI ID=30.1>

<EMI ID=31.1>

 The present invention relates to novel resins.

obtained by copolymerization of, polyesters, modified by

diisocyanates, with unsaturated monomers. These resins

which will be referred to hereinafter under the name of "copolymer resins

<EMI ID = 1.1>

mentally remarkable.

The reaction of the isocyanate functions of the diisocyanate

<EMI ID = 2.1>

according to the following four types of reactions t
<EMI ID = 3.1>
Reactions (1) and (2) lead to linear products containing urethane or amide groups which are useful for subsequent condensations, while

<EMI ID = 4.1>

to crosslinked products unsuitable for the manufacture of oopolyester resins.

Reaction (1) can take place over a wide range of temperatures and, in particular, at room temperature, while reaction (2) only begins at relatively high temperatures, above 100 [deg.].

It is known that unsaturated copolyester resins are obtained by mixing an unsaturated polyester, that is to say a polyester containing at least a certain proportion of unsaturated polycarboxylic acid ester with an unsaturated monomer which can be an unsaturated hydrocarbon, optionally halogen and by copolymerizing the mixture.

<EMI ID = 5.1>

These have already been obtained by adding a diisocyanate to the mixture of polyester and monomer before the copolymerization.

But in this process, only reaction '(1) can take place.

<EMI ID = 6.1>

the copolymerization the temperature hardly reaches values above 100 [deg.], if not quite at the end of the operation, that is to say when almost all of the diisocyanate has already reacted according to the reaction (1).

The Applicant has found, and this forms the subject of the invention, that by reacting the diisocyanate with the polyester before mixing the latter with the unsaturated monomer and by carrying out this reaction at a temperature high enough for the reaction to occur. (2) can take place at the same time as

reaction (1) produces copolyester resins which have particularly advantageous mechanical properties.

Generally the temperature necessary to obtain reaction (2) is between approximately 120 and 200 [deg.] 0:

The copolymerization of the modified polyester with the unsaturated monomer is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization catalyst.

Polyester modified with a diisocyanate is not as

<EMI ID = 7.1>

reliable, but this does not present any drawback since, in order to obtain a homogeneous product, it suffices to knead the modified polyester while hot with the unsaturated monomer or to pour it hot into the lukewarm monomer, on condition, however, that during the modification reactions (3) and (4) have been avoided by the diisocyanate. These reactions are avoided by using an amount of diisocyanate not exceeding 1 gram molecule per gram molecule of polyester, and by limiting the temperature and duration of the heating during the modification.

If, however, it is desired to incorporate more of the diisocyanate into the final resin, this may be done.

<EMI ID = 8.1>

a new quantity of diisocyanate, or in general, of polyisocyanate, but this at moderate temperature, in order to avoid reactions (3) and (4) and then kneading the whole with the unsaturated monomer before mixing proceed with the copolymerization.

According to this variant of the process of the invention, products are obtained which will be referred to hereinafter as overmodified copolyesters, the physical and mechanical properties of which are generally superior to those of simply modified products. The over-modification can be done either with the same diisocyanate as that which was used to prepare the modified polyester, or with a different diisocyanate, or again with

<EMI ID = 9.1>

or toluylene diisocyanate which give the most interesting results

It is possible to use in the process of the invention, without harming the qualities of the products obtained, the various means known to act on this type of polymerization, such as, for example, inhibitors such as hydroquinone or quinone, intended to prevent the development. premature polymerization before use or, on the contrary, polymerization accelerators, such as cobalt naphthenate.

The Applicant has observed that the copolymerization of polyesters modified with diisocyanates is faster than in

<EMI ID = 10.1>

it requires a smaller amount of catalyst. This effect of accelerating the .copolymerization by the presence of diisocyanates is even more noticeable in the case of over-modified resins which contain a greater amount of diisocyanate or polyisocyanate.

Depending on the nature and amount of diisocyanate incorporated in the resin and depending on the type of the latter, different mechanical qualities are obtained. Thus, hexamethylene diisocyanate improves tensile and impact resistance as well as the modulus of rigidity, while toluy-

<EMI ID = 11.1>

less sensitive but on the other hand provides a very notable gain in the resistance of the resin to heat.

Compared to the simple modification, the over modification brings a marked improvement in the mechanical properties, in particular as regards the impact resistance and the tensile strength.

The process of the invention therefore provides great flexibility in the manufacture of copolyester resins and makes it possible to produce a whole range of products having such or such a quality that is desired.

The examples which follow and which are given purely by way of illustration show how the invention can be

implementation and what results can be expected.

Example 1-

An unsaturated polyester is prepared as follows s In a flask fitted with a nitrogen adductor tube, a stirrer and a tube for the removal of nitrogen and water, place
296 g. phthalic anhydride (2 mol.), 116 g. maleic acid

(1 mol.) And 251 g. of propylene glycol (3.3 mol.). The whole is heated for 3 hours at 1600 while bubbling nitrogen at ordinary pressure. Then heated under a vacuum of 15 to 18 mm of mercury and bubbling with nitrogen at 160/170 [deg.] Until the acid number of the product has become less than or equal to 35, which takes about 12 hours. To prevent premature polymerization, 0.13 part is added at the end of the operation to
1,000 hydroquinone. An unsaturated polyester is thus obtained, the relative viscosity of which is of the order of 2 poises.

<EMI ID = 12.1>
- methylene diisocyanate. The mixing and heating are maintained for 10 minutes. Carbon dioxide is released,

<EMI ID = 13.1>

<EMI ID = 14.1>

of styrene. All these operations are carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere. The styrene solution thus obtained is cooled to room temperature and then adjusted with a new quantity

<EMI ID = 15.1>

may have occurred during dissolution.

Then added to 200 g. 0.14 cm3 of silk solution,

<EMI ID = 16.1>

<EMI ID = 17.1>

methyl late. Test pieces are prepared by pouring the mixture thus obtained into molds of suitable shape and placing them <EMI ID = 18.1>

then demolded and annealed for 2 hours at 100 [deg.]. Mechanical tests for tensile strength, impact strength and modulus of torsional rigidity were carried out on these specimens as well as on control specimens prepared in a similar manner by copolymerization with styrene of polyesters not modified by diisocyanate. The following results are obtained which constitute the average of 10 tests:

<EMI ID = 19.1>

<EMI ID = 20.1>

significant improvement in tensile strength and above all in heat resistance which is characterized by the modulus of torsional rigidity at 60 [deg.] C.

Example 2 -

We operate as above but replacing the 9 cm3

<EMI ID = 21.1>

Results similar to those indicated in the table above are obtained except with regard to the modulus of torsional rigidity which goes from 82 to 100 kg / mm <2>.

<EMI ID = 22.1>

A modified polyester is prepared by operating as in Example 1 but using only 4.5 cm <3> hexamethylene

<EMI ID = 23.1>

styrene, as indicated in example 1, but when preparing the test pieces, modified polyester solution is added

<EMI ID = 24.1>

over-modified. This last addition is made at room temperature, then homogenized and added as a catalyst <EMI ID = 25.1>

test pieces and annealed for 2 hours at 100 [deg.].

The mechanical tests carried out on these specimens are given in the table below in comparison with the results obtained with the same resin which has not undergone any modification or over-modification.

<EMI ID = 26.1>

It can be seen from this table that the over-modification improves the tensile strength and the impact compared to simply modified resins, the heat resistance (torsion at 60 [deg.]) Being improved only compared to the control. not modified.

<EMI ID = 27.1>

We operate as in Example 3 but using for

<EMI ID = 28.1>

and a torsional stiffness at 60 [deg.] of 93 kg / mm <2>. It can be seen that toluylene diisocyanate has above all improved the rigidity $, the torsion.

Example 5 -

We operate as in Example 3 but using for

<EMI ID = 29.1>

resin A, and 15 cm3 of hexamethylene diisocyanate for a second resin B.

The results of the mechanical tests carried out on the one hand on an unmodified control, and on the other hand on both modified and overmodified resins A and B, are given below.

<EMI ID = 30.1>

<EMI ID = 31.1>

modified and over-modified with toluylene diisocyanate exhibits remarkable resistance to heat, while resin B (over-modified with hexamethylene diisocyanate) benefits above all from an increase in tensile strength.
