 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

     EXEMPLE   1.-

   A subject of the invention is also, as novel dyes, the chromium and cobalt complexes of the monoazo compounds of the invention.

   It also relates to a process for the manufacture of these chromium or cobalt complexes, in which the monoazo compound of the invention is treated under weakly acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions with an amount of one or more agents giving chromium or cobalt, which corresponds to not less than 0.5 atomic proportion of chromium or cobalt per molecular proportion of this monoazo compound.

   It is preferable in practice to use an amount of one or more chromium or cobalt-giving agents which contains 0.5 to 0.6 atomic proportion of chromium or cobalt, per molecular proportion of monoazo compound present, ie 'that is to say an excess of up to about 20% of the theoretical amount necessary for the formation of the chromium or cobalt complex.

   As examples of the chromium or cobalt-giving agents which can be used in the process according to the invention, mention may be made of chromium or cobalt halides, for example fluorides or chlorides, chromium or cobalt salts of carboxylic acids. aliphatic acid, for example formic acid or acetic acid, and mixtures of chromium or cobalt salts with alkali metal salts of aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acids, for example tartaric acid.

   The treatment of this new monozoic compound with the agent or agents giving chromium or cobalt is carried out as indicated under weakly acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions. The reaction can be advantageously carried out at elevated temperature under atmospheric pressure in an aqueous medium,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 preferably in the presence of an organic solvent, for example ethyl alcohol or normal butyl alcohol, ss-ethoxyethanol, ethylene glycol, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine or pyridine.

   The formation of the metal complex can be facilitated by the addition to the reaction mixture of a wetting or dispersing agent. On completion of the operation, the chromium or cobalt complex is separated and can be purified if desired, reprecipitating it as a salt of an aqueous alkaline medium, for example an aqueous medium made alkaline. by the addition of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, sodium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate or ammonium hydroxide.

   The novel dyes containing chromium or cobalt in accordance with the invention in the form of their alkali metal or ammonium salts easily dissolve in water. They have a very good affinity for animal fibers, for example wool or silk, which they dye in weakly acidic or neutral dyeing baths, for example in dye baths containing ammonium acetate or acid. acetic. They give blue, purple and red shades to the wool, very solid to fulling, to perspiration and to light, and exceptionally strong to repeated washing.

   The dyes are also suitable for coloring synthetic wool-like fibers, for example linear superpolyamide and linear superoplyurethane fibers, fibers made from natural and synthetic proteins and mixtures of these fibers with and with each other. wool.

   The new chromium and cobalt dyes are also soluble in organic solvents and can be used for coloring alcohol inks, for making clean handling alcohol mimeographs, and for pigmentation. in the mass of acetate rayon.

   The invention is illustrated, but not limited, by the following examples, in which parts are expressed by weight.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

     EXAMPLE 1.-
40.0 parts of the monoazo compound obtained by coupling the diazotized 2-aminophenol-4-sulfonamide with methyl- are added.
6-hydroxynaphthyl-2-ketoxime in an alkaline medium with a mixture of 480 parts of ethylene glycol and 240 parts of water. 16.0 parts of chromous acetate are added and the mixture is heated at 95-100 C for four hours and then poured into a solution of
240 parts of sodium chloride in 2400 parts of water.

   The mixture is stirred at 80 ° C. until the precipitate coagulates, it is then filtered and the residue is dissolved with stirring in 5,600 parts of water, 10% aqueous caustic soda is added until moment when. the mixture gives an alkaline reaction with yellow clayton paper and is then heated to 90 ° C. 400 parts of sodium chloride are then added to the solution. The precipitated dye is filtered off and dried at 65 ° C.

   The new chromium-containing dye is a blue-black powder that dissolves in hot water to give a purple solution. It dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid giving a red solution. It dyes the wool purple in a neutral dye bath containing ammonium acetate, giving dyes which are very strong to repeated washing, fulling, perspiration and light.

    EXAMPLE 2.-
The 16.0 parts of chromous acetate used in Example 1 are replaced by 14.0 parts of cobaltous acetate and a dye is obtained which has similar fastness properties.

   The new cobalt-containing dye is a dark red powder that dissolves in hot water to give a burgundy solution. It dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid giving a red solution. He dyes the wool in burgundy in a neutral dye bath containing ammonium acetate.
