   The invention relates to forgable f.erritic alloy steels.

   Belgian patent 492,409 of the applicant describes and claims a forgeable ferritic alloy steel having a high resistance to creep or creep at temperatures ranging at least up to 700 ° C. and having a composition characterized by the absence of nickel above d. 'a proportion of 1.5% and by the presence, as essential constituents, of 0.05 - 0.5% of carbon, 4 - 20% of chromium Ci, 5 - 3% of mulybdenum and, or of tungsten , 0.2 - 2.5% niobium 0.1 2% vanadium, .. 0.003 - 0.5% boron and 0.05 0.25% nitrogen.

   According to patent 492-409 the composition of the alloy may also contain silicon up to 3%, manganese up to 4% and cobalt up to 1%, and the proportions ready.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of the various constituents are as follows:
Carbon 0.10 to 0.25%
Silicon 0.5 to 1.5%
Manganese 0.5 to 1.5%
Nickel 0.5 to 1.5%
Chromium 10.0 to 14.0%

   carbon 0.03 to 0.20% silicon
0.2 to 1.5%, manganese 0.2 to 1.5%, chromium 10.0 to 16.0%, molybdenum 0.4 to 1.0%, vanadium 0.1 to 0.5%, niobium plus tantalum 0.2 to 1.0%, cobalt 5.0 to 15%, boron 0.003 to 0.1%, and iron the remainder.

   Niobium can be partially replaced by an equivalent proportion of tantalum. As is commercially available, niobium generally contains a certain proportion of tantalum in practice.

   The composition can also be modified by the inclusion of nickel up to 2%, and nitrogen up to 0.15%, for example 0.02% to 0.04%. In some compositions embodying the invention, the proportion of cobalt used is not less than 10%, the preferred proportions of the various components in the alloys of the present invention are as follows:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

Carbon 0.04 to 0.12%
Silicon 0.3 to 0.8%
Manganese 0.5 to 1.25%
Chromium 110 to 15.0%

Niobium (plus tantalum) 0.25 to 0.50%
Cobalt 7.0 to 12.0%
Boron 0.005 to 0.02 Iron practically the rest @
It has been found that the compositions of the ranges indicated above have a particular merit with regard to the resistance to creep or creep in the temperature range of 500 to 600 C and are superior in this respect to ferritic steels. previously proposed and known.

   the alloys of the invention can be quenched and annealed to provide high test tension and tensile strength, suitable for applications where high temperatures are employed, for example for gas turbine discs or trays .
