Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

      à 6 atomes de carbone, y compris les éthers mixtes.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   REVENDICATIONS

   It has been found that alkyl halides and polymeric compounds of zirconium containing chlorine and alkoxy groups are obtained by reacting zirconium tetrachloride with aliphatic ethers or alcohols.

   As aliphatic ethers which can be used in accordance with the present invention, dimethyl ether and its homologues are employed, primarily the lower ethers containing.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

      with 6 carbon atoms, including mixed ethers.

   The process is characterized by a remarkable ease of adaptation. In particular, the constitution of the polymeric zirconium compounds obtained during the reaction in the form of solid reaction products can be varied within wide limits. At relatively low reaction temperatures, for example about 150, and with a long reaction time, a water-soluble product is obtained which, in its composition, closely resembles the compound ZrOCl2, as yet unknown until now. now, but which in addition to chlorine also contains alkoxy groups.

   However, if one works at rather high temperatures, for example at 250 ° C., the zirconium compound precipitates out in the form of a powder insoluble in water, containing only a few chlorine groups and al- coxy and whose properties strongly resemble those of zirconium dioxide. This powder can easily be converted into pure zirconium dioxide by treatment with water vapor, then by calcination.

   By varying the temperature, pressure and reaction time, several transformations can be carried out, so that the process can be applied for various purposes. In addition to the alkyl chloride, polymeric esters of zirconia, containing chlorine, are obtained which are very useful products for the chemical reaction; It is also possible to obtain polymeric compounds of zirconium, which in their properties closely resemble zirconium dioxide and which, by subsequent hydrolytic treatment, can be converted into zirconium dioxide.

   This process has a particular advantage in that, starting from anhydrous zirconium chloride, neither the conversion of zirconium chloride to zirconium dioxide nor the formation of alkoxy groups leads to the formation of large amounts. amounts of hydrochloric acid. Chlorine from zirco-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 Nium substituted during the reaction is used almost exclusively to form very useful alkyl chlorides.

   The great ease of adaptation of the process also applies to the technical implementation. The reaction can be carried out at temperatures below the point of sublimation of zirconium tetrachloride, by reacting ether or alcohol gas or as a vapor with solid zirconium tetrachloride. However, the best yields are obtained by first preparing, at room temperature or at low temperatures, the addition compound ZrCl4. 2 ROR ', which is then thermally decomposed at temperatures between about 130 and 400C. R and R 'represent, in this case, identical or different alkyl groups.

   The reaction of the ether or the alcohol with the zirconium tetrachloride or the thermal decomposition of the adduct in question can also be carried out advantageously in autoclaves. The reaction can be carried out both at temperatures above and at temperatures below the critical temperature of the ether or alcohol. Likewise, it is possible to work under the pressure proper to the reaction products, only up to a certain temperature and thus the reaction can be completed with an increase in temperature, under a lower pressure or even without overpressure. The increase in temperature above all leads to an increase in the reaction rate and results in compounds which are relatively poor in chlorine and alkoxy groups.

   The increase in pressure especially favorably influences the yields of alkyl chloride.

   According to a further development of the present process, it has been found that in order to produce polymeric compounds of zirconium containing chlorine and alkoxy groups, and alkyl chlorides, the reaction products of zirconium tetrachloride with liquid alcohols can be employed in the process. place of compounds

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 , the addition of ethers with zirconium tetrachloride.

   It is already known that zirconium tetrachloride dissolves in an alcohol with partial substitution of the chlorine atoms by alkoxy groups and that, when the excess alcohol has been removed, a mixture of compounds of the ZrCl2 type results. (OR) 2 and ZrCl3OR.ROH
It has now been found that such a residue will produce polymeric zirconium compounds containing chlorine and alkoxy groups, as well as alkyl chlorides, if heated.

  Among the alcohols which are especially suitable for carrying out the invention, there are lower aliphatic alcohols having 1 to 3 carbon atoms. Thermal decomposition is very similar to the process described above. It again offers the possibility of varying the decomposition conditions to give zirconium compounds whose constitution can vary within very wide limits.

   It has been found advantageous that the reaction be carried out at elevated pressure in an autoclave, as this will provide better yields of alkyl chlorides. Polymer zirconium compounds can be converted to pure zirconium oxide by subjecting them to steam treatment, followed by calcination.

  EXAMPLES.

   1) From solid zirconium tetrachloride and dimethyl ether, the solid addition compound ZrCl4 is prepared. 2 CH3OCH3. About 325 parts by weight of this binding compound are broken down into approximately 300 parts by heating. The dimethyl ether resulting from the separation reactions is then separated from methyl chloride, thereby obtaining 145 parts by weight of pure methyl chloride. The residue consists of a polymeric zirconium compound containing few chlorine and alkoxy groups. It is insoluble in water. By steaming at about 300-500 and then calcining at about

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 1000, it can be made into very pure zirconium oxide.

   2) For about 35 hours, the 325 parts by weight of the adducts mentioned in Example 1 are heated at 140-150 until gas evolution is complete. After separation of the dimethyl ether, a yield of approx. ron 50% in methyl chloride. The solid residue readily dissolves in water. It has a polymeric character and contains about 2 chlorine atoms per zirconium atom and few OCH3 groups.

  Following Example 1 ,. it can be transformed into pure zirconium oxide.

   3) 281 parts by weight of ZrCl4 are dissolved in 1040 parts by weight of methanol. After distillation of the methanol, carried out at the end under vacuum, 272 parts by weight of a white product are obtained. 50 parts by weight of this solid product are decomposed at temperatures from 180 to 250. A strong current of methyl chloride develops. After separating a little dimethyl ether, 13 parts by weight of methyl chloride can be isolated. As a residue, 32.5 parts by weight of a polymeric zirconium compound are obtained, containing chlorine and methoxy groups which can be transformed into pure zirconium oxide by treatment with water vapor at a temperature of 300 to 500. , then by calcination at a temperature up to about 1000.

   4) 233 parts by weight of pure zirconium tetrachloride and 92 parts by weight of dimethyl ether are reacted in autoclaves at temperatures up to about 130 and under a pressure of up to about 50 atm .

  Then relax to about 8 atm. and further heat up to about 300. In this way, after removing the dimethyl ether, 172 parts by weight of methyl chloride (80% of theory) are obtained. As described in Example 1, the residue can be converted to 123 parts by weight of zirconium oxide.

   5) React, in autoclaves ,. 233 games

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 by weight of pure zirconium tetrachloride with 100 parts by weight of dimethyl ether, at temperatures of about 210 and at a pressure of about 120 atm. 200 parts by weight of methyl chloride are obtained (91% yield, calculated on the methyl ether used), as well as a solid residue which can be converted, in quantitative yield, into pure zirconium oxide.
