Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   In order to cover the molten metal, for example iron, it is necessary to use metallurgical slags which serve as a means of protection against oxidation and, partially, also against cooling of the surface. Said slags are frequently obtained from powders brought in a suitable form to the surface of the melt and which, at this point, form a slag blanket. Such powders are used, for example, in the casting of metals. These powders are also used as solder powder for electric arc welding.

   It is known to produce such heat-insulating powders from a mixture of several oxides, the main component of which is constituted by a combination of Al2O3 and SiO3. Various additives are added to this basic component, in particular ferrous metals, for example Fe2O3, and this, in general.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Usually in an amount not exceeding 0.2 - 4% of ferrous metals. Other additives, used singly or in combinations, in similar or considerably higher percentages, are TiO2, MnO, MgO, as well as CaO and CaF2. A particularly frequent additive is MnO which is generally used in an amount ... 'at least 12 up to 50%.

   Up to now various proposals have been made concerning the constitution and treatment of the main component formed by SiO2 and Al2O3. In one of the cases, in order to obtain a particularly high resistance to heat, it was recommended to use Al6Si2O13 powder in the form of mullite crystals (German patent n 841,539) * However, this presents the disadvantage that for the production of this powder, as long as the rare and expensive natural ore is not used, relatively high temperatures must be used.

   It is further known that the temperatures for the production of such a powder, of which mullite forms the main component, can be reduced by adding means for lowering the melting point or else a de. oxidation or a metal; alloying with the metal to be welded and exhibiting a lower melting point (German patent application C 5080 VI / 49h). However, this process is also relatively expensive.

   In addition, a method is known, deviating from that described, for producing a heat-insulating powder and according to which synthetic or natural silicates are heated, at the same time as a binder with a lower melting point, up to the melting temperature of said binder and are then bound at an even higher temperature; however, the maximum temperature is below the melting point of the silicate. Here we obtain a product which must still be sprayed subsequently. Although this method allows the use of lower temperatures, it is, however, inferior to the two methods mentioned above because of the special need to grind the product.

   The invention aims to combine the advantages of the various known methods while eliminating their disadvantages. The invention relates more particularly to a heat-insulating powder for obtaining metallurgical or similar slags from a mixture of several oxides, the main component of which consists of a combination of Al2O3 and SiO2 and which, free of binder. , is worked into a porous structure. According to the invention, the main component

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 is constituted totally or partially by the natural clay of deposit which this dehydrated at low temperature such that it essentially retains a structure free of mullite.

   The dehydration is carried out, for example, at temperatures of about 800 to about 1000 ° C., most particularly at about 900 ° C., surprisingly, an absolutely sufficient degree of dehydration is thus obtained for the performance of a powder of suitable porosity. Heretofore no account has been taken of the fact that a sufficient degree of dehydration for the present purpose can be obtained with deposit clay, preferably of a lighter color, at such low levels. dehydration temperatures. Even for the process mentioned for producing a powder with a binder, this property has neither been revealed nor exploited.

   The invention also covers the fact that, to the main component formed by the natural deposit clay, additives of the known type mentioned are added, most particularly ferrous metals, for example ferro-titanium, ferro -chrome, as well as combinations which give off oxygen, in particular oxides, for example MnO2. An advantage of the invention lies in the fact that such additives do not burn at the temperatures of use.

    Example of execution: Clear clay from Aussernzell near Passau, respectively from another source but essentially of identical composition, is granulated by means of a granulating machine.

  After adding about 2% ferro-silicon and / or ferro-manganese, dehydration is carried out for about half to one hour in a rotary kiln at a temperature of about 900 C. After cooling. , the powder is ready to use.
