<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

In scraper conveyors with two chains constituted by ordinary link chains, guided positively in the transport corridor, these chains are divided into short sections connected to each other by closing links extending in a horizontal plane, and between them. branches of which are arranged the driving elements (scrapers). A bolt passing through bores provided at the ends of the branches of the link and of the squeegee and arranged in the longitudinal direction of the chain, connects the squeegee to the closing link, and at the same time unites its open branches to close the chain.
These closing links generally carry wearing parts fixed on them or coming from manufacture, the length of which represents a multiple of the thickness of the link, and by which the chains are guided on their outer sides in the conveyor corridor. . However, these known type of closure links have the drawback that breaks frequently occur on their side carrying the wear part near this part, which considerably affects the operational safety of the conveyor. The aim of the invention is to eliminate this defect.
The object of the invention is to make it possible to produce a closing link for an ordinary link chain of the aforementioned type, the wear piece of which is only connected to the closing link over part of its length, i.e. - substantially corresponding to the thickness of the link.
Indeed, according to the observations which led to the invention, the breaks which occur on the closing link of the type used up to now must be attributed to the large differences in the elongation modulus of this link under the effect of the stresses. flexion acting at the point of transition between the wear part reinforcing the link and the curved parts immediately adjacent to it, which are more elastic. According to the arrangement in accordance with the invention, the reinforcement of the closing link of the chain on its side carrying the wearing part is reduced, so that this closing link does not exhibit abrupt differences in the modules of bending and elongation under the effect of the varying loads exerted during operation and the various bending stresses which result therefrom.
It can therefore no longer occur as with the closing link of the type used until now, at the point of transition between the part reinforced by the wearing part and the part of the bent and unreinforced closing link adjacent to the part of the wear part. wear, initiation of faults or cracks which ultimately cause failure.
The closing link is generally made by stamping, but it can exceptionally be made from a foundry part. Upon proper shaping of the closure link, there is generally no difficulty in manufacturing a die such that the resulting closure link has the shape provided according to the invention. However, in cases where this manufacture presents difficulties for a given shape of the closing link or of the wearing part, it is first possible to manufacture a forged or cast blank, in which the wearing part is. connected to the closing link over its entire length approximately, and then shorten the connection zone by machining with production of chips, to bring it to the length corresponding to the thickness of the chain link.
By virtue of this process, a closing link can be given the shape provided for by the invention when the shape of the wearing part makes it practically impossible to manufacture directly by stamping.
In order to simplify and facilitate manufacture, it is possible to first provide the closing link, in its median vertical plane and perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the chain, only with an axis-shaped heel, of which the thickness corresponds substantially to the cross section of the closing link. A wear part is then engaged on this axis, which consists of an element manufactured separately and which is provided with a corresponding recess. The wearing part is then fixed in the working position by one hand.

whatsoever, by welding or by means of a safety key.
The pin-shaped heel of the closing link may have a cylindrical or prismatic cross section, or else the shape of a hook, the wearing part always having to be conformed accordingly.
When the closing link carries only one bead of this type, its manufacture presents no difficulty. The dies are simpler, lighter and more economical. Despite this, the strength and resistance of the finished closing link is not less than in the case of the first embodiment described. It is possible, without difficulty, to place the heel in the form of an axis of the closing link, as well as the elements connecting the wearing part to this axis (weld bead, safety key or other element) on the outside of the section transmitting the forces. Such a link gives the same result as the type described above.
In fact, since the wearing part does not produce any appreciable reinforcement of the closure link, the faults and breaks which have hitherto occurred due to the fact that the reinforced sections of the closure link have a modulus of elongation different from that of the curved ends of this link.
The appended drawings show, by way of nonlimiting examples, several possible embodiments of the subject of the invention.

Figure 8 is a top view of the closing link shown in Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a side view.
Figure 10 is a vertical sectional view of another embodiment.
Figure 11 is a corresponding profile view.
According to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, the closing link 1, having the shape of a bracket placed horizontally and connecting together two chain sections (not shown) by engaging vertical links. on each side in the closing link there are open branches 2 between which is disposed the squeegee (not shown) of a two-chain squeegee conveyor. The ends 3 of the branches have coaxial bores 4, in which engages, in the longitudinal direction of the chain, a screw passing through the scraper and connecting it at the same time to the ends 3 of the branches of the closing link.
On the elongated part 7 of the closing link, extending in the longitudinal direction of the chain, is rigidly fixed or stamped, a wearing part 8, the length of which "represents a multiple of the thickness". d "of the link. The wearing part is not fixed to the longitudinal branch of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
link over its entire length "to", but only over part "b" of this length, which corresponds substantially to the thickness "d" of the link.
The branch 7 of the closing link is therefore reinforced only over this relatively short distance "b 'le, and joined by its neighboring unreinforced parts, the curved parts of the closing link which, during the operation of the scraper conveyor, are subjected to a particular elastic deformation.
This branch 7 can therefore be elastically deformed without resulting in the production of faults or rupture as a result of a sudden transition between reinforced parts and elastically deformable parts.
The closing link shown in FIGS. 4 to 6 differs from that previously described by the fact that the wearing part 8 has a shape which makes it impossible to manufacture by stamping or at least at the cost of great difficulty. This is why, in accordance with the invention, only a blank is first produced by stamping in which the wearing part 8 is connected to the longer branch 7 of the closing link 1 approximately over its total length " a "Then, using a tang or a milling cutter, a notch is made lo just above the upper edge of the branch 7, from each of the two ends of the wearing part 8, in the direction of the middle part of this part (Fig.
6), so that the wearing part is only connected to the branch 7 over a length "b" corresponds to part of the total length "a" In order to avoid the formation of cracks, we first drills holes 11 at the end of the notches lo. In order to facilitate or make possible the application of a drill (or a drill) on the curved part of the wearing part, at the point indicated by the arrow 12, flats 13 are provided as soon as the die forging of the blank part, perpendicular to the axis of the holes 11. Thanks to this process, it is possible to manufacture the chain closing link according to the invention, even if the conformation of its wearing part does not allow obtain it directly by stamping.
According to the embodiment shown in Figures 7 to 9, the closing link 14, in the form of a stirrup carries in its median vertical plane 7-7 perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the chain, a heel 15 in the form of an axis, projecting upwardly from the elongate branch 16 extending in the longitudinal direction of the chain. This pin is stamped or cast in one piece with the rest of the closing link. A separately manufactured wearing part 18 having a hole 17 is then fitted to this heel 15, and it is fixed in place, for example by a solder joint 19. The closing link, once completed, therefore also bears a rigid wearing part, which is only connected to it over a short length, namely over the width of this heel 15.
Since the weld joint 19 is located outside the section of the longitudinal branch 16 transmitting the forces, the resistance of the closing link is not understood by the welding. It is therefore unnecessary to carry out a special annealing or quenching treatment after welding.
The pin-shaped heel 15 is cylindrical and has a diameter "f" and a section which approximately corresponds to the section of the closing link or its elongated branch 16, or not much greater. Instead of being retained by welding at 19, the wearing part 18 can also be fixed to the heel 15 in the form of an axis by a key (not shown) driven into holes provided in the two members. This fixing key can also be placed outside the section of the elongated branch 16, so as to avoid unnecessary weakening of the link.
Instead of being cylindrical, heel 15 may also have a square, rectangular or hexagonal section, or otherwise be profiled. The hole 7 of the wearing part being provided accordingly, the same result is obtained in each case.
According to the embodiment shown in Figures 10 and 11, the heel 20, in the form of an axis of rectangular section, of the closing link 21 has
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a hook shape or is curved at right angles. A part bent horizontally towards the outside joins the vertical part starting from the elongated branch 16. On this horizontal part can be fitted horizontally, in the direction indicated by the arrow 23, a wearing part having a recess ho - Corresponding rizontal 25 A weld joint 26 ensures a rigid seat of the wear part 24. In this case also, the fixing can be provided by a key or by a similar element.
The details of construction can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of mechanical equivalents.
