Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Les avantages de l'application d'un agencement d'engrenage   diffé-   rentiel pour combiner les deux moteurs sont les suivants ;
 EMI2.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

   The present invention relates to an improved locomotive engine assembly.

   The invention proposes to provide a locomotive engine assembly which is capable of operating continuously in a very wide range of speeds.

   According to the invention, this object is achieved with the aid of a motor assembly comprising at least two motors, each motor being connected by means of a torque converter to a differential gear arrangement, the output of this the latter being connected directly or indirectly to one or more driving wheels of the locomotive, a device being provided to prevent a reverse rotation of the output element of each torque converter when the motor associated with this converter is couple is at rest.

   Said device for example may be a one-way clutch which could be arranged between the torque converter and the differential gear arrangement. Alternatively, the device may be constituted by a braking device which could keep the output element of the torque converter or one of the gears of the differential gear arrangement stationary.

   The torque converter may be of the hydrodynamic type or of the hydrostatic type provided with a regulator.

   If desired, the output member of the differential gear arrangement can be connected via a reverse gear to the drive wheels. An additional speed boot can be provided to obtain, for example, two speed ratios.

   By differential gear arrangement is meant a gear train by which the torque of two control elements is balanced and transmitted to a single driven element. It can consist of a spur gear or a bevel gear.

   The reverse gear, if present, may be clutch actuated or it may be a simple reverse bevel gear.

   According to a variant, it is possible to have recourse to a reverse spur gear.

   A locomotive engine assembly according to the invention is particularly useful for shunting machines which must operate continuously at speeds within a range which may be between 0.8 and 32 km per hour.

   At the low speed end of the range the power required is very low and, in a two-motor arrangement according to the invention, the power can easily be supplied economically by one motor. Using only one motor and its associated torque converter, the motor will run at a higher speed and under a higher load than if both motors were used. At this higher speed, the efficiency of the motor and torque converter is better than at very low motor speeds.

   The fuel consumption of the engine is lower and therefore the use of an engine equipped with a torque converter is more efficient and economical, at low speeds, than the use. of both engines.

   Likewise, by having recourse to a torque converter associated with each motor, it is possible to have recourse to one or the other motor alone for an operation at low speed.

   If a higher gear or a gear boot providing two gear ratios is used, the engine assembly can be used before-

 carefully in a small-scale freight train locomotive,
The advantages of applying a differential gear arrangement to combine the two motors are as follows;
 EMI2.1
 1. Working with a single motor automatically provides a 2 to 1 speed reduction between energy input and final command. Maneuvering on a speed hump can be performed with an engine alone by halving engine wear, and reducing fuel consumption while increasing transmission efficiency at low speeds on. rails.

   2. No gear change mechanism is required, and control is performed by the "governor" only.

   3. Motors can be added or removed without altering torque by simply starting or stopping a motor.

   4. The maximum torque for final drive with one motor running is the same as the maximum torque when the two motors are geared together.
 EMI2.2

  5. When both motors are running, the torque exerted by the two motors should always be equal, thus avoiding the possibility of one motor doing the tone or most of the work due to the difference in regulation.

  In the accompanying drawings: FIG. 1 very schematically shows an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 schematically shows another embodiment of the invention; Figure 4 is a plan sectional view of part of the gear shown in Figure 1; FIG. 5 is a view similar to that of FIG. 3 of a transmission vaxian; Figure 6 is a schematic view of a reverse gear suitable for use in a motor assembly according to the present invention; Figure 7 is a sectional view of the reverse gear taken along line VI-VI of Figure 6.

   In FIG. 1, two diesel engines 10 and 11 are shown. The output shaft 8 of the diesel engine 10 is connected to the rotor of a torque converter 12 and the turbine of the latter is connected via a shaft. output 14 to a one-way brake 15 through which control is transmitted from the torque converter. The brake operates to prevent the shaft 14 from being driven in reverse.

   The output shaft of the one-way brake 15 is connected to an input gear 17 of a spur gear differential indicated generally at 18.
 EMI2.3

  The spur gear differential is shown very schematically in Figure 1, and in more detail in Figures 4 and 5, and consists of a differential z housing which forms a first gear in the final drive gear train. The differential housing 12 carries three pairs of gears meshing with each other, two of which are shown

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 in Figure 1 at 20, 21, 22, 23, and only one in Figures 4 and 5 at 22 23.

   The toothed wheel 17 meshes with the pinions 21 and 22, and an additional toothed wheel 24 meshes with the pinions 20 and 23. The toothed wheel 24 is driven via the gear train 25 26, 27 by a shaft 28 which is connected to the output of a one-way brake 16.

   The one-way brake 16 is controlled by the turbine of a torque converter 13. The rotor of the torque converter 13 is driven by the output shaft 9 of the motor 11. The differential gear housing 19 controls a pinion 29 which drives an output shaft 30. The latter carries a bevel gear 31 which engages with additional bevel gears 32 and 33 carried by a shaft 34. Either of the bevel gears 32 and 33 may engage at will with the shaft 34 by means of hydraulically controlled clutches shown schematically at 35, 36.

   The output shaft 34 controls a drive wheel 37 of the locomotive via a pair of reduction gears 38 and 39.

   The torque converter 12 has the form shown in Figure 2, the torque converter 13 being similar. The shaft 8 is fixed to a rotor 41 carrying a blade 42. The output shaft 14 is connected to a turbine 43 which carries three sets of blades 43a.

   The torque converter also comprises a fixed housing 44 carrying a reaction vane 45 46.

   In operation, when both motors are running, control is effected from torque converters 12 and 13 (figure 1) and one-way clutches 15 and 16 and is transmitted through 1 differential gear and the shift gear. reverse to the locomotive drive wheel 37. If a motor 10 or 11 is stopped, the one-way brake 15 or 16 prevents the command of the other motor from being transmitted back to the stopped motor, and a 2: 1 speed reduction automatically provided between the output. remaining engine and final drive.

   The torque converter, in fact, provides a continuously variable speed so that torque is transmitted from one or the other motor or both in a uniform and economical manner.

   Each engine can be fitted with a speed regulator 47, 48, mechanically connected to a single regulator lever 49 in the driver's cab of the locomotive. An engine can be put into operation by simply starting the engine, and it will then run at the speed set by the governor which controls both speed governors.

   To work with one engine only, it suffices to stop an engine, which can be done without modifying the torque transmitted to the drive wheels.

   One-way brakes or clutches are of the type known as a "Legge" self-synchronizing coupling (see Figures 4 and 5) and each of them mainly comprises a sleeve 51 which is provided on its outer surface with a number of helical ribs. 51a which engage with internal grooves formed on a sleeve 50 The latter is provided with dogs 52 and two peripheral flanges 50a and 50b which support a number of studs 50c on each of which is mounted a light pawl 52a
A set of dogs 53 is arranged around the internal periphery of a ring 53a supported by a fixed structural part and the pawls 52a are arranged to pass over the dogs 53 when, for example the output of the shaft 9 is transmitted by through the fluid coupling 13 to the one-way brake 16.

   Under these conditions, the effect of the ribs 51a and the grooves

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 formed on the sleeve 50 is to urge the element 50 in the position shown in Figures 4 and 5, in which it abuts against a stop formed in the fixed outer housing.

   Under these conditions, the pawls 52a pass over the dogs 53
However, when the drive for shaft 28 is reversed, pawls 52a engage dog clutches 53 to prevent sleeve 50 from rotating with shaft 28; under these conditions, the sleeve 50 descends along the grooves to the extent permitted by a second fixed stop and the dogs 52 come into engagement with the dogs 53
The sleeve 50 is thus kept stationary and the engagement of the ribs ± 1a in the internal grooves of the sleeve 50 keeps the shaft 28 stationary, and therefore prevents any further rotation in reverse.

   Shapes of two speed gears are shown in Figures 4 and 5.

   The planet carrier 19 is provided with an extension sleeve 54 on which is fixed by splines a toothed wheel 55 The latter meshes with the toothed wheel 56 mounted freely on the shaft 30. The toothed wheel 56) when in position. operation, is connected to the shaft 30 by means of a Legge self-synchronizing coupling 57 and the toothed wheel 29 is connected to the shaft 30 by means of a metal-to-metal friction clutch 58 of the type already known in marine and locomotive trans missions.

   The speed ratio between toothed wheel 29 and the outer side of planet carrier 19 is 1: 1 and between toothed wheels 5,6 and 55 is 2: 1.

   When one or more motors are started, the clutch 58 is disengaged so that the toothed wheel 29 is free on the shaft 30. The control from the gear box 19 is thus transmitted by through the toothed wheels 55 and 56, and the direction of rotation of the latter is such that the unidirectional coupling 57 bolts the toothed wheel 56 on the shaft 30; the control is thus transmitted to the shaft 30 by means of a 2: 1 gear reduction constituted by the toothed wheels 55 and 56.

   When a suitable locomotive speed has been obtained, clutch 58 is disengaged to connect gear 29 to shaft 30.

   The result of this operation is a slowing down of the gear box 19 and a disengagement of the one-way coupling 57. There is thus no interruption of the torque supplied to the shaft 30 when changing from a low speed to a low speed. high speed wait for low speed to be in action until it is replaced by high speed.

   The speed of the shaft 30 is now doubled, and the torque applied to the latter is reduced by half compared to the speed and torque obtained when it is driven through the toothed wheel 55.
Slowing down simply causes the clutch 58 to disengage and the command is then transmitted to the shaft 30 as soon as this speed drops below that of the toothed wheel 55
Instead of the friction clutch 58, a fluid coupling could be used to adjust the control through it, for example by filling or emptying the coupling.

   Referring now to Figure 5 in which the corresponding elements have the same reference numerals as in Figure 4, the Legge self-synchronizing coupling 57 and the clutch 58 are replaced here by a double claw clutch of which one claw clutch 59 is attached by splines to shaft 30 and can be moved in one direction to engage toothed wheel 29. and in the other to engage toothed wheel 56

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

Thus, in a manner well known in the construction of straight toothed wheels, one or the other of the toothed wheels 29 and 56 can be connected to the shaft 30, while the other remains free.

   When the locomotive is pulling its maximum load, the claw clutch is set to connect gear 55 to shaft 30, and increasing torque. up to a little less than the sum of the torques of the two motors 10 and 11 can be obtained by making the motor 10 control the wheel 17 and the motor 11 control the wheel 24.

   When such a locomotive is driven without load or with only a light load, it is possible that the claw clutch 59 will engage with the toothed wheel 29.

   An example of a reverse gear other than that shown in Figure 1 is shown in Figures 6 and 7. In this case, the bevel pinion 31 is replaced by a spur gear 60. The latter meshes so permanent with an intermediate toothed wheel 61 mounted on roller bearings 62 on an intermediate shaft 63, (see figure 7).

   A second intermediate toothed wheel 65 also engages the toothed wheel 61 and has the same number of teeth as the toothed wheel 60 and is similarly mounted on roller bearings 66 on the driven shaft 67. It emerges from the Figure 5 that the toothed wheel 61 is larger than the toothed wheel 65 However, the toothed wheel 60 has the same width as the toothed wheel 65 and is axially offset with respect to the latter by a distance slightly greater than its width , so that the toothed wheel 60, while engaging the toothed wheel 61, does not mesh with the toothed wheel 65
Shafts 63 and 67 are mounted on roller bearings in gear case 68,

     an additional support being provided by means of a transverse element 69.

   Gear wheels 70 and 71 are keyed to shafts 63 and 67 respectively, and both have the same number of teeth. Between these toothed wheels is an idler toothed wheel 72 which is mounted on roller bearings 73 so as to be able to rotate freely in the gear case. The toothed wheel 72 engages with the two toothed wheels 70 and 71.

   Clutch elements with teeth 74 and 75 are fixed by splines on the shafts 63 and 67 respectively so as not to be able to turn, but to be able to slide on the latter. The clutch elements 74 and 75 each have a peripheral groove with which the forked ends of an arm shown schematically at 76 and pivotally mounted at a point 77 midway between the driven shafts 63 and 67 engage.

   In the position of the arm 76 shown by a solid line in FIG. 7, the element 74 is in its extreme right position (observing the drawing) in which its teeth engage teeth. internals formed on an overhanging extension 78 of the toothed wheel 61 so as to lock the latter to the shaft 63 However, if the arm 76 rotates in the reverse direction, the element 74 is disengaged and the element 75 is disengaged. brought into engagement with the extension 79 of the toothed wheel 65. As a safety measure, the arrangement is preferably such that the element 75 only comes into contact with the extension 79 when the element 74 is completely disengaged from the extension 78.

   In operation, toothed wheel 60 is driven by the power source at all times in a constant direction which is considered for the purposes of this description to be the dextrorsal direction. Therefore, the toothed wheel 61 steadily rotates in the sinistrorsum direction and the toothed wheel 65 in the dextrorsum direction. If the arm 76 is in the position shown in Figure 7, the toothed wheel 61 is locked to the shaft 63 which therefore rotates in the sinistrorsum direction. Similarly, the toothed wheel

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 71 which is rotated by the toothed wheel 70 and the idler toothed wheel 72 also rotates in the sinistrorsum direction.

   The two drive axles of the locomotive are controlled by the intermediate shafts 63 and 64 respectively by means of any convenient transmission, for example by means of straight gears and a telescoping assembly or by means of 'a chain drive. This transmission, which is not shown in the drawings, may include the toothed wheels 70 and 71.

   In order to drive the locomotive in reverse, the arm 76 is rotated, after the transmission has been brought to rest, in the sinister direction so that the toothed wheel 61 is released and the toothed wheel 65 is locked. to the shaft 67. The latter, with its toothed wheel 71, therefore rotates in the dextrorsum direction, which causes the toothed wheel 70 to rotate in the dextrorsal direction by means of the idler toothed wheel 72. Thus, by rotating the arm 76, the direction of rotation of the intermediate shafts is reversed, each shaft and its associated toothed wheel however rotating in the same direction as the other, whether it is in the dextrorsum or sinistrorsum direction.

   FIG. 3 schematically shows an embodiment of the invention in which recourse is had to four motors arranged in pairs. Each motor of each pair acts through a torque converter and a clutch on a differential gear.

   Motors 80 and 81 drive via converter! fluid torque 82 and 83 and Legge unidirectional brakes 84 and 85 respectively, a compensating differential gear 86.

   Similarly, the motors 87 and 88 fitted with their respective torque converters 89 and 90 and their unidirectional Legge brakes 91 and 92 control a differential compensating gear 93
The differential gear 86 drives a pinion 94 which is in mesh with a pinion 95, and the differential gear 93 drives a pinion 96 which is in mesh with a pinion 97, and the two pinion drives 95 and 97 are combined into a third differential 98, the control of which is transmitted through a reverse gear 99 which may be as shown in Figure 7, to the drive wheels 37 of the locomotive.

   Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to use any combination of 1, 2, 3 or 4 motors depending on the operating conditions.

   The gear wheels 94, 95 and 96, 97 preferably have different ratios, for example 1.33: 1 and 2.22: 1 respectively. This has the effect of extending the speed range and makes the arrangement suitable for a light passenger locomotive.

   The advantages of this arrangement over an arrangement in which four motor assemblies are geared to the axles without the differentials are as follows:
1) With direct gearing, the locomotive does not provide the initial tractive effort or is unable to reach the maximum speed required.

   2) With the differential, in the event of failure of one or the other of the motors, the maximum tractive effort is always available at the reduced maximum speed, while with a direct control arrangement the maximum traction traction is reduced by 25%
3) With the differential arrangement, the locomotive can operate with a maximum tractive effort on two engines if the maximum speed necessary allows it to be achieved, for example during maneuvers, which would constitute an economy. It can also be obtained using a single engine at low speed for maneuvering on a speed hump.

   Each torque converter provides a speed curve whose torque stroke is downward and which is capable of ensuring that the torque generated by two or four motors, as the case may be, remains in equilibrium despite the differences in power output due to a general condition or regulation.
