Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

A process for preparing an ion exchange material from the acid sludge resulting from washing with sulfuric acid of crude light oils and ion exchange material thus prepared.
The present invention relates to a process for preparing an ion exchange material from the acid sludge resulting from sulfuric acid washing of crude light oils and the ion exchange material thus obtained.
The object of the present invention is to prepare an ion exchange material from the acid boes obtained by washing crude light oils with sulfuric acid in the by-product recovery installations attached to coking plants and in oil refineries and thus profitably use acid sludge. The ion exchange material thus produced is capable of removing hardness from the water and reducing to any desired degree the total dissolved solids content and alkalinity. The ion exchange material can be used

read over and over again by periodic regeneration.
Regeneration can be easily carried out with an acute solution of common salt or dilute acid, depending on the nature of the treated water used. The ion exchange material acts with equal efficiency whether it is used in the sodium cycle or in the hydrogen cycle. It can be used in grain sizes ranging from 0.1 to 5 mm. The present invention therefore makes it possible to profitably use the acid sludge obtained in industries such as plants for the recovery of by-products from coteries and petroleum refineries, etc., in which crude oils are washed with acid. sulfuric acid in one of the refining processes. The acid sludge produced in this way is in the form of a black, viscous and extremely corrosive mass which has an unpleasant odor.
Their evacuation is a difficult problem and entails additional expenses. In recent years, a variety of materials having the property of exchanging ions have been prepared from expensive chemicals and by expensive processes. The preparation of an ion exchange material from the acid sludge as described above offers a great economic advantage in that the raw material used is industrial waste, the disposal of which has long been a problem for industry. . Another advantage of this process is that the dilute sulfuric acid obtained as a by-product can be used in various ways.
However, the present invention relates to a process for preparing an ion exchange material from the acid sludge resulting from the washing with sulfuric acid of crude light oils.
The process includes:
1) heating of acid sludge,
2) the separation of the resinous material thus forced,
3) preliminary purification nar disintegration of the resinous material and washing with water.
4) the final purification and conversion of resinous water to sodium salt, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
5) sorting in different dimensions.
1) The heating of the acid sludge is done either indirectly or directly by water vapor, with or without the addition of water, at a temperature ranging from 50 to 150 C.
2) The separation of the resinous material from the acidic layer is carried out by draining the acidic layer from below the resinous layer or by removing the resinous layer from above.
The separation takes place at a temperature ranging from duscu'à
100 C.
3) Preliminary pricing is carried out by cooling and breaking up the lumps of material obtained in (2) above to dimensions less than 1.5 cm, washing with water until the material is almost free of 'acid.
4) The final purification and conversion to sodium salt is carried out by continuing grinding to dimensions less than 5 mm and washing it with a dilute aqueous solution of caustic soda or sodium carbonate of a concentration folding 0.1 to 10.0 g per 100 cm3, then washing with an acuous solution of common salt with a concentration ranging from 5 to 35 g for
100 cm3 and rinsing with water until the excess salt is removed.
5) The sorting to the different dimensions is carried out by drying;} the air of the material obtained in (4) and screening.
