 EMI1.1

  " Procédé combiné de fabrication de 2-metiyl-l-bntefM et d'aluminium 1:ir1alqlea.8
 EMI1.2

    La présente invention a donc pour buta :   - principalement un procédé combiné pour la fabri- cation de 2-méthyl-1-butène et d'aluminium trialkyles uti-   les,     lequel     procédé   permet de   pallia:-     les     inconvénients   de l'ancienne technique; - un procédé de fabrication de 2-méthyl-1-butène, lequel procédé donne une sélectivité élevée, un bon rende- ment et un minimum de produits indésirables; - un procédé dans lequel les produits secondaires de la réaction ont une valeur importante par eux-mêmes;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Exemple I-

 EMI14.3

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 couche aqueuse.

 % the present invention relates to a combined process for the manufacture of 2-methTl-1-butene and trialkylated aluminum; it relates more particularly to a manufacturing process (1) of very pure 2-methyl-1-butene and with good yields and (2) of trialkyl aluminum, which can be transformed into alcohols with high molecular weight and alpha -olefins.

   So far, the manufacturing processes of 2-methyl-

 read in the manufacture of isoprene. This, in turn, gave isoprene which is impure and it is necessary to carry out fairness to a subsequent purification.

   These purification processes have increased the cost of manufacturing isoprene to such an extent that the manufacturing process is not economical.

   In a chemical process, it is highly desirable that all products have a significant value. It is well known that many chemical processes result in a side product of little or no value. Such processes are industrially feasible because of the inherent value of the main product, or because the yield of secondary products is insignificant. It is obvious that if the secondary products exist in some quantity greater than traces, it is economically advantageous that their value be approximately that of the main product.

    The aim of the present invention is therefore: - mainly a combined process for the manufacture of useful 2-methyl-1-butene and trialkyl aluminum, which process overcomes: - the drawbacks of the old technique; - a process for the production of 2-methyl-1-butene, which process gives high selectivity, good yield and a minimum of undesirable products; - a process in which the side products of the reaction have a significant value in themselves;
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become obvious to those skilled in the art on reading the following description.

   Generally, the process of the present invention comprises the following steps: (a) reacting propene with tri-aluminum

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   thyl to form cornas produces a mixture of alkylated hydrocarbons and aluminum; (b) distilling the product mixture to recover 2-methyl-1-butene, propene, propene dimer and an aluminum alkyl residue; (c) reacting said alkylated aluminum residue with ethylene, to obtain as a product a mixture comprising molecular weight aluminum trialkyls! Student; (d) recycling the propene recovered in stage (b); (e) converting the high molecular weight aluminum trialkyls of step (c) into useful products.

   The process of the present invention has the following clear advantages: (1) The propene is reacted with triethyl aluminum under conditions which give high selectivity, good yield and a minimum of undesirable products, such as, for example, propene dimer; (2) Impurities or unwanted products can be easily separated from the desired 2-methyl-1-butene. This is considered to be a salient feature of the present invention. In addition, it is a characteristic which does not exist in the old processes relating to the chemistry of aluminum trialkyls, (3) This process eliminates the possibility of contamination of 2-methyl-1-butene by nickel of Raney.

   (4) High molecular weight aluminum trialkyls can be converted into high molecular weight alcohols and alpha-olefins which have high commercial value; the cost price of 2-methyl-

   Other advantages will become apparent as the description is read.

   Before continuing with specific examples illustrating the present invention, it is good to indicate the reactions used and to indicate the conditions under which the process operates. As regards the reactions exposed, it is understood that these are hypotheses and that they are in no way limiting.

   The alkyl groups of the trialkyl aluminum formed in the present invention can have up to 1,000 carbon atoms. In theory, there is no known limit to the number of carbon atoms in alkyl groups.

  For practical reasons, the Applicant prefers to manufacture trialkyl aluminum in which the groups

   Aluminum alkyls are pyrophoric and must be handled in a solvent. Any product that
 EMI5.10
 by itself does not react with aluminum. Alrlss is a suitable solvent. Examples of preferred solvents are saturated and aromatic aliphatic hydrocarbons.

   The aluminum trialkyls of step (c) of the process of the present invention have average molecular weights of 240 and above. These products can be oxidized and hydrolyzed to produce high molecular weight, straight chain primary alcohols, along with extremely pure aluminum hydroxide. In a variant,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 they can be reacted with ethylene in the presence of Raney nickel to produce alpha-olefins and aluminum triethyl. These products can, if desired, be reacted with bromine to form straight chain alkyl bromides, and very pure aluminum bromide.

   It should be noted that the Raney nickel, as used in this process, has no chance of contaminating the 2-methyl-1-butene formed in step (a).

  As indicated above, 0 'is an undeniable advantage. As is known, it is difficult to remove Raney nickel by filtration or centrifugation.

   The preaent process can be carried out either in cyclic form or in continuous form. In the laboratory and on a small scale, it is preferable to operate in a cyclic form, since the apparatus required for continuous operation is more expensive. Per center, for workshop operations on a large scale, the higher cost of the device is compensated by a greater production rate and by a lower unit cost price.

   For the purpose of describing more clearly the nature of the present invention, the following illustrative examples will be given. However, it is understood that the present invention is not limited by the particular conditions or details set forth in these examples. . The parts indicated are parts by weight.

   REACTION OF PROPENE WITH TRIETHYL ALUMINUM
The first stage of the process is the reaction of propene with triethylated aluminum to form as a product a mixture comprising hydrocarbons and alkylated aluminum. Some of the possible variations are illustrated in the following examples.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

  Example I-
20.7 parts of triethyl aluminum are charged to a flask, and the flask is placed in a rocking autoclave. The reactor is flushed with dry nitrogen gas, pressurized propene is introduced and the temperature is slowly raised to 108-110 ° C over about 3 hours, and the temperature is maintained at this interval for two hours. about a half hours longer. During this time, the gauge pressure of the propene is maintained between 77 and 104 kg / cm2. The reactor was allowed to sit and cool for 16 hours, the contents extracted, the flask rinsed with toluene, and the washings added to the reaction product mixture.

    The toluene layer is separated from the mixture obtained and is distilled, which gives hydrocarbons boiling between 44.5 and 108 ° C. The remainder of the product is hydrolyzed, which gives a mixture of hydrocarbons. A sample of the released hydrocarbons is collected and analyzed using a mass spectrometer.

   The composition of the mixture is shown in the table below:

   To carry out the reaction, aluminum is introduced. triethyl and propene in saturator 1, in which aluminum triethyl is nature of propane. From the saturator 1, the reactants pass into the reactor 2. A nitrogen back pressure is maintained in the reactor using the. back pressure regulator 3. The light gases pass from liquid piese 4, through scrubber 5 to wet test meter 6, where the volume is recorded, and from there to the vent pipe.

   At 10, a sample of the gas is taken for analysis. In an industrial process, the gases from the stripper 5 would go to a recovery tower, and we would recycle the propene we would recover there. The reaction time is controlled by controlling the flow rates of propene and triethyl aluminum. pressure gauges, valves and other devices of minor importance are not shown in the figure.

   The figures corresponding to these examples * are indicated in the appended Table III. Generally speaking, these figures indicate that: (1) temperatures between 200 and 20400 do not give good selectivities; (2) the gauge pressure must be greater than 17.5 kg / cm2 and less than 105 kg / cm2, in order to obtain high selectivities (see appended Table III).

   Example XLII -
This example illustrates the transformation of the alkylated aluminum residue into a mixture comprising high molecular weight aluminum trialkyls.

     30 g (16 ml) of tripropyl aluminum are added,
 EMI14.3
 in 40.9 g of xylene (48 mal) in a stirred autoclave which was flushed with nitrogen. The autoclave is heated to 108 ° C. and ethylene is added to a gauge pressure of 105 kg / cm 2. The reaction is allowed to continue for three hours while maintaining the temperature between 108 and 138 C. After having decompressed the autoclave, the trialkyl aluminum and the remaining solvent weigh 92 grams, which represents a gain of 38.1 grams. . This product is then hydrolyzed at 50 ° C. with 25% hydrochloric acid and providing the apparatus with an ice-water condenser.

   Hydrolysis gives, at normal temperature and pressure, 2.70 ml (0.123 moles) of gas, an aqueous layer and an organic layer. We throw the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 aqueous layer. The total yield of organic layer is 78 g (102 ml). Taking into account the. xylene originally present, the net yield of product in the organic layer is approximately 37 grams.

     The gas is analyzed using a mass spectrometer and it is found that it contains both odd-numbered and odd-numbered hydrocarbons, between C2 and C6 '. organic layer by liquid phase and gas phase partition chromatography. Analysis reveals a major proportion of hydrocarbons containing 8 or more carbon atoms, both even and odd numbered carbon atoms.

  The overall ratio, both in gases and in the organic layer of odd-numbered hydrocarbons to even-numbered hydrocarbons, is 0.4 to 1.

  To calculate the composition of the organic layer, a correction is made for the xylene present. Table VIII gives the composition of this corrected organic layer.

 combined for the manufacture of 2-netbyl-1-butene and aluminum trialkyls. 2-Meeuethyl-1-butene can be made under a wide variety of conditions: but a narrower range of conditions has been shown under which selectivity to the desired product is increased and where. the formation of unwanted products is reduced to a minimum. The applicant has further shown that the trialkyl aluminum formed as a by-product in the first stage of the present process can be made into valuable products.

   Although particular embodiments of the present invention have been described, it is understood that the invention is not thereby limited, as many modifications can be made within the scope of the invention. spirit and within the scope of this invention.
