   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  Process for manufacturing a mixture of cyanamide and lime nitrate free from ammonium nitrate.

   It is known that the crystallization and storage of lime nitrate free from ammonium nitrogen presents certain difficulties. In order to obtain an irreproachable crystallization of such nitrate of lime, it is necessary not only to concentrate the melt to a minimum degree of concentration, which already creates difficulties, but also, during the crystallization properly said, certain precise conditions must be observed, such as supercooling of the melt, maintaining a certain content of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 seed crystals and the supply of cold condensing water or even, where appropriate, cold brine.

   These difficulties could be overcome by adding to the mixture a certain percentage of ammonium nitrate.

   However, for the manufacture of a mixture of cyanamide and nitrate of lime, one cannot use, or at least not without special precautions, a nitrate of lime containing ammonium nitrate, because the free quicklime contained in cyanamide reacts with ammonium nitrate forming free ammonia, which would lead to losses and certain disadvantages.

   Accordingly, for the manufacture of mixture of cyanamide and nitrate of lime, it has been necessary to mix a melt of the latter substance with powdered or powdered cyanamide. Unfortunately, apart from the agglomerations and lumps which form in large quantities and which are very inconvenient for the implementation of the continuous process, it was, moreover, until now, the practice to start with nitrate of lime. crystalline, the manufacture of which already gave rise, by itself, to the above-mentioned difficulties; account must also be taken of the energy input necessary to bring the mixture to the melting temperature.

   The Applicant has noticed that this expenditure in apparatus and energy on the one hand, as well as the difficulties enumerated above on the other hand, can be avoided, if a molten mass of nitrate of lime is sprayed on A powdery or powdery cyanamide stirred at a temperature below the melting point at the low melt. The temperature of the cyanamide is preferably 20 to 50 ° C lower than that of the dark mass. Stirring of the cyanamide can be ensured in a screw tank, by an orassage

 continuous, so that the spraying is carried out at each instant on new particles of cyanamide.

  The concentration of the lime nitrate melt is in the range of 75-88% Ca (NO3) 2.

   The process according to the invention, which allows continuous and undisturbed operation, is based on the observation that when cyanamide is brought into contact with a molten mass of nitrate of lime, compounds are formed. Mixed crystals with a considerably higher melting point than pure nitrate of lime. In addition, the heat of fusion is dissipated by heating the sprayed cyanamide.

  If homogenization is necessary, it can then be carried out using conventional grinding machines; likewise cooling this mixture to the temperature desired for storage or bagging does not present any difficulty.

   The process according to the invention is suitable for mixtures having a nitrate content of the order of 1 to 6% and, thanks to the elimination of the difficulties of crystallization and of storage of the nitrate of lime free of ammonium nitrate. - nium, it turns out to be less expensive and more rational than all the fully known mixing processes.
