<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Exemple I

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
Exemple IV

"Process for converting a load of saturated hydrocarbons"
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to hydrocarbon reactions and in particular to a process for preparing saturated hydrocarbons of the C4 to C7 range from saturated raw materials containing an alkane having at least 8 carbon atoms per molecule.
The reaction product is composed of

The raw material constituting the feed can also contain cyclanes which undergo a transformation in different ways depending on the number of carbon atoms contained in their molecules.
Lower molecular weight branched chain aloans, such as isobutane, isopentane, isohexanes and isoheptanes, are particularly useful in the manufacture of high octane motor fuels.
Isobutane is used in the alkylation of butenes to produce isooctane for use in admixture in motor fuels. Branched chain alkanes from C5 to C7 have the property of being valuable constituents of motor fuels.
The invention provides a process for producing these branched chain hydrocarbons from any saturated hydrocarbon feedstock which contains alkanes having at least 8 carbon atoms per molecule. These raw materials can be derived from any straight-run petroleum fraction which boils on top of n-heptane, eg gasoline, naphtha, gas oil, lubricating oil and paraffin fractions. The invention thus provides a means of transforming each of these moieties into more useful branched chain saturated products.
Raw materials which have a sufficiently high boiling range to contain cyclanic hydrocarbons having at least 12 carbon atoms also generally produce a

It has now been found that any alkane boiling above heptane has saturated hydrocarbon fractions which contain such alkanes together with cyclanes can be converted in high yield to alkanes in the range from C4 to C7 to predominance of branched chain alkanes.
This transformation is effected by catalysis using either of two forms of aluminum bromide and hydrobromic acid catalyst, as described below, and requires some combination of conditions. reaction as defined in more detail in what follows ,. The feed of raw material must be composed essentially of alkanes alone or of alkanes in admixture with cyclanes. : Therefore, the petroleum fractions containing aromatic or olefinic hydrocarbons must first be treated to remove these hydrocarbons before reacting the fractions in the process of the invention.
According to the invention, a raw material containing alkanes which boils above normal heptane and which may also contain cyclanic hydrocarbons is reacted in the presence of one or more monocyclic cyclanes containing from 7 to 9 carbon atoms. carbon per molecule, using an aluminum bromide and hydrobromic acid catalyst. in the raw material which have at least 10 carbon atoms also form branched chain alkanes of the range of
C4 to C7, including isobutane.
Oyolans contained in the feed having less than 10 carbon atoms form equilibrium cyclanic mixtures of the range C7 to C9. high boiling oyolans having at least 12 carbon atoms can also give significant amounts of C7 to C9 oyolans in addition to the C4 to C7 alkanes.
C7 to C9 oyolans can also be formed to a smaller extent from C10 to C11 oyolans, depending on the reaction conditions.
By employing the reaction conditions defined above and in particular when the quantity of C7 to C9 oyolans contained in the reaction mixture exceeds 25%, a remarkably clean reaction is obtained, no sludge forming in appreciable quantity. All of the raw material constituting the feed can be made into alkanes of the C4 to C7 range or the same aloans mixed with C7 to 9 oy-olans formed from cyclanes of higher molecular weight by leaving to the reaction sufficient time.
In the practice example where a heterogeneous system is used, the catalyst complex can easily be separated from the hydrocarbon reaction product by sedimentation and it can be used again to process additional quantities of the hydrocarbon feedstock. .
When a homogeneous system is used, the C4 to C7 aloans can be separated by distillation of the reaction mixture and the aluminum bromide recovered as a mixture with all or part of the C7 to C9 oyolans can be used again for the conversion. additional amounts of raw material. The reaction can be carried out batchwise or continuously.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The mechanism by which C4-C7 alkanes are formed from the higher boiling saturated feedstock is assumed to involve the removal of an ion / hydride from the aloane constituting the feed to form a secondary carbenium ion. or tertiary. When the alkane constituting the raw material is straight chain, the carbenium ion isomerizes first to a single side chain ion and then to a two side chain ion. When the initial alkane is branched, the hydride ion is stripped from the tertiary carbon atom and the resulting oarbenium ion isomerized giving the form to two side chains.
In the state of double branching, a quaternary carbon atom is formed under the effect of the displacement of the methyl radicals which rise and fall along the hydrocarbon chain. The ion breaks off and is hydrogenated to form a C4 to C7 saturated product.
In all cases, the formation of isobutane appears to be promoted by the reaction meoanism. When the aloane of the feed is an ootane, the product thus obtained is composed essentially of isobutane. Nonanes mainly produce isobutane and isopentane. The decanes are separated into C4 and C6 groups, as well as into C5 groups.
The main reaction products obtained from the higher boiling undéoanes and aloans are isobutane, isopentane, s isohexanes and isoheptanes.
Relatively small amounts of normal alkanes are formed. In each case, practically all of the aloanes in the feed can be converted to C4 to C7 alkanes, leaving a sufficiently long reaction time. The time required to convert most of the aloane in the feed into C4 to C7 hydrocarbons depends to a large extent on the reaction temperature chosen between 0 and 100 C. At the lower end of the range, a time
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
reaching 60 hours may be necessary, while at the higher end of this range the reaction may take as little as 1 to 15 minutes, but sludge formation is then more likely to occur. 'appear.
As mentioned above, the presence of a monocyclane having at least 7 carbon atoms is important.
If the raw material constituting the feed enters a boiling range which includes C7 to C9 oyclanes and the content of these cyclanes exceeds 10% and preferably 25 by weight, no additional amount should be added. silencing cyclan. On the other hand, if the feed is poor in C7 to C9 oyolans, then an oyolan from some other source must be added. The exaot role of cyclane is not known with certainty, but its presence is essential to assure a clean reaction when using both a heterogeneous and a homogeneous reaction system. In the absence of cyolane the reaction proceeds very rapidly and large amounts of sludge are formed.
Dimethyloyolopentane, diethyloyclopentane, methyloyolohexane, dimethyloyolohexane, trimethyloyolohexane, methylethyloyolohexane, n-propyloyclopentane, methylisopropylcyclopentane, etc., constitute examples of C7 to C9 cyclanes which can be used. During the reaction, the C7 to C9 cyclane may be converted into one or more of its isomers, but only a small amount is converted into other products. In general, one should preferably employ an oylan which boils sufficiently above the boiling range of the reaction products of the aloans, so that these. products can be easily separated by distillation.
When the process of the invention is carried out using a homogeneous catalyst system, the aluminum bromide is dissolved in the hydrocarbons in an amount of 20 to 200%.

can use any saturated hydrocarbon or mixture of alkanes having at least 7 carbon atoms, but it is desirable to use a branched chain alkane, for example an alkane having at least two branches, in order to decrease the preparation time of the complex and it is especially preferred that this branched chain alkane have 8 carbon atoms per molecule.
The proportion of the catalyst complex to the hydrocarbons used in the reaction mixture is not critical, but it is generally advantageous to employ a weight ratio of the complex to the hydrocarbon of at least 1:10 and more preferably of 1: 1. There is generally a slow degradation of the catalyst over time, so the addition of fresh catalyst or the possible replacement of the used catalyst with freshly prepared complex is necessary. Starting from a relatively large proportion of the catalyst, less frequent top-up or replacement must be carried out.
The preparation of the catalyst complex consists of dissolving or suspending aluminum bromide in the saturated hydrocarbon and feeding hydrobromic acid into the mixture. This can be done at room temperature, although the use of elevated temperature may be desirable to increase the reaction rate. in order to obtain a better result, preferably at least 5 moles of the alkane should be employed per mole of aluminum bromide. Under these conditions, a certain amount of the alkane obviously breaks up into fragments giving a C4 fragment which becomes the hydrocarbon part of the complex. As the reaction proceeds, the mixture becomes milky and the orange-yellow liquid complex then separates from the hydrocarbon phase by precipitation.
Add more hydrobromic acid until the milky appearance is gone.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
to obtain the most active catalyst complex, the addition of hydrobromic acid must be discontinued at this stage. After separation of the phase from the complex, it can be washed with an alkane such as hexane, heptane, octane or the like hydrocarbon to remove any amount of uncomplexed aluminum bromide remaining in the phase. the catalyst.
The complex obtained is a stable material possessing a strong catalytic activity and this shows no sign of appreciable degradation during the atilisation in the isomerization reaction, so that the temperature employed is not too high and that a cyclan in C7 to C9 is present in an amount of at least 10% and, preferably, at least 25% by weight of the total hydrocarbons.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples, given without limitation.
Example I
The process of the invention was practiced to convert normal nonane exclusively to butanes and pentanes in a homogeneous reaction system. A normal solution containing 128 g of nonane, 352 g of methyloyclohexane and
400 g of aluminum bromide was placed in an autoclave. Hydrobromic acid was introduced into the autoclave until the effective pressure reached 3.5 kg / cm3, the amount of acid thus introduced being 47 g. Hydrogen was then introduced until the total effective pressure was about 7 kg / mc2. The mixture was stirred continuously and allowed to react at a temperature of about 29 ° C for a total of about 45 hours.
As the hydrogen was consumed, additional hydrogen was introduced to maintain the total effective pressure at about 7 kg / cm2. Small samples of the reaction mixture were taken periodically during the reaction.

The C7 oyolan added to the feed mixture remained substantially intact. mud was not formed during the reaction.
Example III
In this example, a fresh saturated diesel fuel was used as the feedstock. This fraction was obtained from straight-run gas oil having a boiling range between about 224 and 371 C by treatment with silica gel to remove aromatics.
417 g of the saturated gas oil mixture was mixed with methyloyolohexane in the volume ratio of 30:70, and 402 g of aluminum bromide was dissolved in the mixture. 14 g of hydrobromic acid was added to the mixture contained in an autoolave (at the effective pressure of 3.2 kg / om2) and hydrogen was added to maintain a total effective pressure of 17.6 kg / cm2. The mixture was stirred continuously 3 and allowed to react at a temperature of about 29 ° C for 297 min.
The results which are given in Table III show that about 38.3% of the gas oil fraction was converted to C4 to C7 aloans and that only about 21.7% of the hydro-carbon product contained compounds having more than 10 atoms. of carbon. No product boiling above trimethyldéoalines is deoelled. The reaction mixture was again sludge free.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
Example IV
The filler material was a wax-like oil sometimes called "cerol". This product constitutes the type of material which is obtained by removing the oil from the unpilated paraffin, and by recovering the oily fraction which has a solidification point high enough to be almost able to be assimilated to a soft wax. The material had been treated with silica gel to remove tonal components containing aromatic rings. It had a solidification point of about 25.10 C, an Engler boiling range of about 363 to 454 C, a density at 15.6 C of about 0.813 and a Saybolt viscosity at 37.8 0 of 82 seconds.
The reaction mixture consisted of 152 g of paraffin oil, 345 g of methyloyclohexane, 151 g of aluminum bromide and 20 g of hydrobromic acid. Hydrogen was added at a total effective pressure of 20.4 kg / cm2. The reaction temperature was about 270 and the total reaction time was about 32 hours and 45 minutes.
The results listed in Table III show that about 57.4% of the paraffin oil feed was converted to C4-C7 alkanes and that only about 6.4% of the obtained hydrocarbon product consisted of compounds having more than 10 atoms. of carbon. Again, no product boiling above the trimethyldéoalins was detected and no sludge formed during the reaction.

These results show that the saturation products of gasoline can be converted almost completely to saturated hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range.
As in all previous examples, the C4 to C7 alkanes were predominantly branched chain alkanes. From these results it can be calculated, disregarding the C7 cyclane, that the product contained 18.7% of the C8 and C9 cyclanes formed during the reaction.
In addition to the preparation of 1 C4 to C7 alkanes, the invention can also be used for the preparation of C7 to C9 cyclanes. For example, assuming that the raw material of the feed is a saturated hydrocarbon fraction containing both alkanes and cyclanes of the C10 to C16 range, the reactions occur.

Oyclanes having at least 12 carbon atoms are converted partly to C7 to C9 oyclanes and partly to C4 to C7 aloans.
Then, the reaction product can be fractionated to give a C7 to C9 oyolanic product, as well as an aliphatic product consisting of C4 to C7 alkanes.
