<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
1 - Le rendement augmente en raison de la préchauffe de l'air ;
2 - Le rendement augmente en raison de la plus longue durée réactionnelle du craquage ;
3 - Le taux de production augmente en raison des plus grands débits de l'huile de charge qui sont possibles ;

La figure 1 est une élévation latérale d'une forme d'un appareil suivant la présente invention ;
La figure 2 est une élévation, en partie en coupe, d'une partie de l'appareil de la figure 1 et à plus grande échelle;
La figure 2a est une continuation de la figure 2 et représente le reste de l'appareil de la figure 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
L'air chaud s'échappe par 1'in
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Method and apparatus for the production of carbon black The present invention relates to the production of carbon black from petroleum oils or from all types of hydrocarbons such as shale oil, coal tar, etc.
Of course, it is generally known that a higher quality of carbon black is obtained by rapidly cracking a finely divided hydrocarbon at a relatively high temperature in a turbulent atmosphere in which the rate of heat transfer to the hydrocarbon. is very fast. It is also known that when preheated air is used a higher efficiency is obtained due to the fact that a smaller portion of the hydrocarbon has to be burned in order to increase the heat of the gases and the hydrocarbon. - re remaining at the cracking temperature.
The gas velocity is very high and in some cases is higher than the aon velocity, and the high temperatures that come into play (especially in the case of reactors intended for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
producing small particle size carbon black) present many problems, some of which are discussed below.
Most of the time, the furnace or reactor consists entirely of a refractory material.
In the Belgian patent application of November 29, 1960 N 475.223, the furnace or reactor has the shape of a metal tube which is provided on its outer surface with heat exchange fins, the whole being enclosed in an air jacket tubular metal.
Following the structure of the aforementioned Belgian patent application, the cooling air enters the concentric space between the outer air jacket and the inner tube, that is to say the "finned tube", in s 'flowing in one of a number of flow patterns toward the front end of the reactor. There, the air turns and enters the interior of the finned tube which forms the furnace or reactor and is mixed there with an excess of hydrocarbon which is partially burnt; the remainder being cracked into hydrogen and carbon black, and the hot effluent gas generated flows towards the rear end of the reactor.
The cooling air contained in the jacket, which flows between the air jacket and the finned tube, becomes hotter and hotter as it approaches the front end of the reactor. The maximum temperature prevailing inside the finned tube is reached when the combustion reaction is completed, which takes place, as experiments have shown, approximately 90 cms away from the point of introduction of the hydrocarbon in a finned tube having a size suitable for industrial operation.
The temperature of the gas inside the finned tube drops from this point towards the discharge end of the finned tube due to the ab-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sorption of heat by the cracking action of the hydrocarbon and by virtue of the heat transferred through the intermediary of the finned tube to the cooling air contained in the jacket. Thus, as the length of the finned tube is increased, the preheating temperature of the air increases, and the maximum temperature prevailing inside the finned tube also increases due to the additional heating already existing in the air. air used for combustion.
Therefore, it is appreciated that the length of a finned tube of any particular construction is limited by the maximum operating temperature of the material of construction of said tube. High temperature stainless steel and "Iconel" alloys can withstand continuous operating temperatures between 1038 and 1260 C as long as they are not subjected to high mechanical stress. With the finned tubes about 6 meters long, it was possible to achieve reheat temperatures of 538 "C., As well as an estimated maximum temperature of nearly 1927" C. inside the finned tube.
Despite these facts, the finned tube operates in a relatively cool state (approximately 760 C) at an air-to-gas ratio of 15: 1 (natural gas-2? 2 large calories) when no added oil in the reactor, and there is excess oxygen. Under these conditions, there is a blue flame and very little energy is radiated to the finned tube, most of the heat being transmitted by conduction through the gas film. When adding eight there is a reducing flame when adding a large excess amount of hydrocarbon. Under these conditions, the carbon black particles formed radiate heat directly to the wall, which constrains the temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
maximum of the tube to increase to over 1038 C.
Therefore, the longer the finned tube, the hotter it becomes at the maximum temperature point.
Thus, there is a limit to the length of the finned tube and the preheating temperature to which the air in the jacket can be heated.
As the length of the finned tube is increased:
1 - The efficiency increases due to the preheating of the air;
2 - The yield increases due to the longer reaction time of cracking;
3 - The production rate increases due to the larger feed oil flow rates that are possible;
4 - The finned tube is subjected to higher temperatures.
It will be appreciated that with the increase in finned tube length, although the larger feed oil flow rates eventually tend to lower the reaction temperature somewhat, this is more than offset by the additional preheating of air and this actually results in higher finned tube temperatures.
Therefore, a means is necessary to limit the preheating temperature of the air and to still obtain the longest reaction time which allows the greatest flow of feed oil. To some extent, this can be achieved by limiting the heat transmitted by coating the inner surface of the tube with a high temperature flame diffusion coating, such as aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide, and installing a refractory jacket: previously cast, as has already been proposed previously.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The present invention aims, among other things, to provide: - an improved method and apparatus for the manufacture of high quality carbon black at a greatly reduced price; - an apparatus for achieving the above-mentioned objects, which is easy to adjust and which is relatively simple and inexpensive to install, operate and maintain.
More particularly, the present invention contemplates a cylindrical furnace or reactor of which only a relatively small and intermediate part is made of refractory material, the remainder of the reactor being constructed of metal and provided with air cooling means.
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of an apparatus according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of part of the apparatus of Figure 1 and on a larger scale;
Figure 2a is a continuation of Figure 2 and shows the remainder of the apparatus of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and Figures 4 and 5 are cross sections taken along lines 4-4 and 5-5 respectively of Figure 2a.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral 2 denotes a cylindrical casing of refractory material which comprises the chamber in which the reaction takes place, the latter being provided with a spray orifice 4 containing a spray nozzle 5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
which evacuates a fine spray of water 6 which is directed concurrently with the oil being cracked into carbon black and hydrogen.
The cylindrical casing 2 of refractory material may be provided with a metal jacket which extends over its entire length, or with a metal ferrule at each end; in either case, an annular rim 7 is provided.
At the anterior and posterior ends of the cylindrical casing of refractory material 2 there is a cylindrical metallic casing as shown at 8 and 10, respectively. The inner end of each of the cylindrical metal casings 8 and 10 is provided with an annular rim 12 which is bolted to the annular rims 7 at the ends of the cylindrical casing 2 made of refractory material.
Inside each of the cylindrical metal casings 8 and 10 is a metal tube (as shown at 34 and 15 respectively), the internal diameter of the metal tube having the same dimension as the bore of the cylindrical refractory casing. 2 and its alignment.
By way of particular example, the anterior cylindrical metal casing 8 and the posterior cylindrical metal casing 10 may each have the form of conventional steel pipes of 45 cms (internal diameter), the internal metal tubes arranged concentrically 14 and 15 having an internal diameter of 20 cms. Each of the internal metal tubes 14 and 15 is provided with cooling fins extending longitudinally, 14a and 15a respectively, which may for example have a radial dimension of 44 mm and which are ninety-six in number.
In Figure 1 the left end of the inner metal tube 14 is shown as terminating a short distance from the adjacent end wall 20 of the casing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
external cylindrical metal 8, thus providing a non-abstruse cylindrical chamber, the purpose of which will emerge below.
Between the outer diametrical edges of the longitudinal cooling fins 14a and 15a and the inner walls of the outer metal and cylindrical shells 8 and 10 is a helicodal metal tape as shown at 22 and 23 respectively. The inner edges of the helical tapes 22 and 23 are welded at appropriate intervals to the radially outer edges of the cooling fins 14a and 15a respectively, but need not necessarily be secured in any way to the inner surfaces of the outer metal shells 8 and 10.
Thus the helical metal tapes 22 and 23 help to support the internal metal tubes provided with longitudinal fins 14 and 15 concentrically in the outer cylindrical metal casings 8 and 10 and in alignment with the bore of the cylindrical casing of refractory material 2.
The outer cylindrical metal envelopes 8 and 10 are provided in the vicinity of their inner ends with a tangential air inlet, as shown at 30 and 32 respectively, and each of the latter may have the shape of a rectangular slot of 7, 5 these over 30 cms
The outer cylindrical metal wall 10 is provided with a tangential air outlet 34 which may have the same size and shape as the aforementioned air inlets 30 and 32.
From the above construction and arrangement, it emerges that the cylindrical casing 2 of refractory material achieves and maintains a fairly high ("homogenization") temperature, while the internal metal tubes 14 and 15 at the ends of the casing are cooled by air, the tube 14 countercurrent and the tube 15 in the direction of
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
flow,
as the reaction continues.
As the air enters the tangential air inlet 30 of the cylindrical casing 8, helical motion is imparted to it by the helical passage defined by the helioordal strip 22, the latter helping to maintain the most much of the air in helical rotational motion around the longitudinal cooling fins 14a while a small portion of the air passes between and along the fins. The helical motion of the air moving at high speed over the tapered edges of the fins causes a highly turbulent flow, tending to decrease the thickness of the air film and increase the heat transmission from the fins.
The above-mentioned combustion air, after passing along the helical passage, rotates and enters the outer end of the metal tube 14, passing through the latter and into the combustion zone which is just inside the tube. the inlet end of the tube This is where the combustion gas and carbon-providing oil are introduced and where combustion begins.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the combustible gas is admitted into the combustion zone of the furnace or reactor through a pipe 45 which extends through a stuffing box 46 and the center of the end wall 20. of the outer metal casing 8 and in the adjacent unobstructed cylindrical chamber of the latter. However, the pipe 45 terminates a short distance from the adjacent end of the inner metal tube 14.
A flame-holder disc is fixed and carried to the inner end of the pipe 45 for supplying fuel gas, said pipe being provided with radially extending fuel gas discharge orifices 49 disposed in the vicinity of the surface. posterior of said disc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The oil supply line is indicated at 51 and is shown as being disposed axially therein. inside the fuel gas line 45 and extending through the center of the flame-carrying disc 47 and terminating in a spray nozzle 53 which is disposed in the immediate vicinity of the flame-carrying disc.
The air entering through the air inlet 8 mixes with the combustible gas which is admitted through the combustible gas line 45 and escapes therefrom through the peripheral exhaust ports 49 which are connected. immediately behind the flame disc 47. The gas passes around the flame disc with air and a uniform mixture is obtained by the turbulent flow. The spray nozzle 53 which is: mounted on the inner end of the oil line 51 and immediately in front of the flame-holder disc 47, atomizes the liquid hydrocarbon and introduces the small droplets into the base flame at the point where combustion begins.
The flame carrier, comprising the flame carrier disc 47 and its associated apparatus, provides a uniform mixture of the combustible gas from the air by passing this mixture through a throttle which in turn provides a high degree of turbulence and also ensures a very turbulent swirling flame after ignition.
If a vaporized hydrocarbon is used, the spray nozzle 53 can be eliminated and an open ended line substituted.
In either case, the oil is cracked into carbon black and hydrogen which are entrained at the same time as the effluent gases through the bore of the cylindrical casing 2 of refractory material by heating the combustion air intake and being cooled during the process.
Cooling water is introduced through '
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
from the nozzle 4 into the gas stream immediately after the effluent gas leaves the first heat exchanger and enters the refractory shell 2 and is atomized as a fine spray and begins to evaporate. Cooling of the effluent gases continues as they pass through the posterior inner metal tube 15 at a temperature sufficiently low to allow them to be subsequently handled in a carbon collecting system which may be of entirely conventional construction.
As previously mentioned, at the anterior end of the inner metal tube 14 the air in the jacket rotates and enters the latter. The combustion gas and the feed oil are introduced at this point through the flame disc 47 and the nozzle 53 for the oil spray. The gas and some of the oil burn first to generate enough heat to crack the remaining oil. The hot effluent gases and the cracking action continue to advance through the inner metal tube 14 and into the bore of the cylindrical casing 2 of refractory material until they are cooled by the spray of water 5 and in the second heat exchange section which comprises the inner metal tube 15.
The cooler effluent gases pass through the inner metal tube 15, releasing additional heat and exiting the carbon reactor via line 60 connected to the carbon black collector system. An additional quantity of cooling air is added via the tangential inlet 32 in the concentric space between the outer metal casing 10 and the inner metal tube 15. This air circulates helically along the helical strip 23. and around and between the fins 15a and is heated. Hot air escapes through 1'in

through tangential outlet 34 and is used to supply process heat, as previously described.
The length of the first section of the reactor which includes the inner metal tube 14 is limited so that the preheating temperature of the air does not become too excessive. As shown, the second section which is defined by the cylindrical casing of refractory material does not have an air jacket and acts as a homogenization chamber to obtain a longer cracking time, and thus to ensure greater charge oil flow rates and greater yields. One or more cooling sprays 5 may be used at the discharge end of this refractory section.
The third section which comprises the inner metal tube 15 is a heat exchanger which cools the hot gases by heat exchange with cooling air, thereby eliminating or limiting the amount of cooling water required and also doubling the process heat source for drying the pelletized carbon black and for preheating the reactor oil charge. Some of the additional benefits of heat exchange cooling are:
1-11 decreases the volume of gases handled by the carbon black collecting system.
2 -. It increases the concentration of carbon black in the gas stream causing it to agglomerate to a greater extent and thus a greater percentage of the carbon black can be collected by the cyclone collectors.
3 It greatly lowers the dew point of gases, thus helping to eliminate corrosion due to condensation of water vapor in

the collector system, especially during the on and off periods.
Naturally, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown and is capable of receiving various variants falling within the scope and spirit of the invention.
