" SAC A VALVE EN MATIERE PLASTIQUE n
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"PLASTIC VALVE BAG n
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a plastic bag, in one of the corners of which is driven a valve which is formed by a tab projecting from the end of the bag, this tab being folded inward and welded by its side edges. to the sides of the bag.
In the known embodiment, the bag and the valve are cut from a single piece of material, which has the advantage that nesting or insertion of a pre-fabricated valve is not necessary. Against this advantage, mention should be made of the following disadvantages due to which the application of the known embodiment does not provide in many circumstances the expected results.
The bags are used for packaging a powder or granular material such as cement, artificial fertilizers; plastic granules etc. After filling, the valve is closed under the effect of the pressure of the contents of the bag, so that material cannot spill out of the bags during transport or storage of the filled bags.
In order to be able to withstand the forces to which they are subjected during transport, the bags must be made of a sufficiently strong material. For this purpose, the wall thickness of polyethylene bags weighing more than 25 kg in the filled state should be at least 0.2-0.25 mm.
It has appeared, however, that in this case the valve is no longer flexible enough to be satisfactorily closed by pressure when the bag is filled. There may then remain openings through which material can escape from the filled bags.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The diameter of the valve corresponds to the diameter of the discharge line of the bag filling machine.
This diameter is substantially less than the width of the bag, so that the tab of which the valve is made is significantly narrower than the bag. This means that, during the manufacture of the bags, a not insignificant amount of material is lost, an amount which, depending on the ratio between the width and the height of the bags, is between 5 and 10% of the deposit material.
When welding plastics, the weld bead is weaker where the thickness of the material to be welded varies, than at other places. When the bag is full, the side walls of the bag are located at some distance from each other. This produces, in particular on the middle part of the weld bead, which connects the two walls, a force which tends to tear this bead.
In principle, the weld can withstand this force.
In the known bag, however, there is, just in the middle of the weld bead, a double thickness of material, given that at this point the side edges of the valve are welded to the walls of the bag. The resulting weakening of the weld bead at the point where the load to which the bead is subjected can lead to tearing of the weld when the filled bag is subjected to an impact, for example. , when the bag is thrown, as soon as it leaves the filling machine, on a conveyor belt or when a certain number of bags are stored one on top of the other.
The object of the present invention is an embodiment which does not have the aforementioned drawbacks.
This result is obtained given that, according to the invention, at least the end of the tab-'possède a thickness smaller than the wall of the bag. For this purpose, a part protruding from the end of the bag, can be rolled or stretched
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
until the desired reduction in wall thickness is obtained.
It is also possible to weld or glue to the bag a tab of thinner material or that of the bag; Since the valve should not contribute to the solidity of the bag, one can choose, for this purpose, a polyethylene sheet with a thickness of
0.1 mm or less still.
The valve is then so flexible that after filling the bag it is completely closed under the pressure of the filling material. Leaks in the filled bags can therefore no longer occur. The loss of material during the manufacture of the bags is extremely low since the edge to be stretched or laminated is shorter than in the known embodiment. In the event that the thin tab is welded or glued to the bag, the bags can be cut straight. It is therefore possible to cut more bags than previously from a specific strip of plastic material. As an additional material, a small tab of thin material is optionally used which is significantly less expensive than the thicker material used for the bags.
Since a large mass of product is used for the manufacture of drys, this saving in material, small in appearance, is ultimately transformed into a significant reduction in the cost price.
In addition, the change in thickness is no longer in the middle, when closing the bag by welding, so that the danger of seeing the bag tear at this point, after filling and during transport. , is lower.
In addition, the change in thickness takes place gradually, so that the decrease in resistance at the transition points is not as great as in the known embodiment.
The invention will now be illustrated with the aid of the embodiments shown, by way of examples, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
- the figures assigned the index a represent a bag before the installation of the valve, while the figures assigned the index b represent the same bag after the installation of the valve and the closure by welding of the end of the head, and - Figure 4 is a sectional view of the bag along the line IV-IV of Figure 1b, in which the thickness of the material is shown on a larger scale to facilitate understanding of the method of production.
The bag 1 consists of a seamless polyethylene tube, closed at one end by a weld bead 2. The thickness of the polyethylene is 0.2 mm in the exemplary embodiments. The width of the flat bag is 50 cm and the height 70cm. A polyethylene tab 4 with a thickness of 0.1 mm surrounds one of the corners 3 of the bag and is connected to the wall of the bag using a welding bead 5. The height of the tab m is 15 cm and its width, when fully extended, is 26 cm.
The wedge 3 is then folded inwards together with the tab, until the side edges 6 of the tab match the end of the bag. When using a rectangular tab, the angular rim 8 of the bag is then, after having been folded back, substantially parallel to the end 7 After folding, the bag is formed by welding using a weld bead 9 , parallel to end 7. The weld bead is at a distance of 2 cm from the end, so that the distance between point 10 where the bead meets the end of the bag bent inward and the point 11 where the weld bead 5 is intercepted, is also about 2cm.
It has been found that the bag has less tendency, under these conditions, to fall on the wedge 3 than is the case when the point of intersection 11 is close to the edge of the wedge. A distance of at least 1 cm is desirable. The desired result can also be achieved by placing the weld seam
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
only where the corner is folded inwards, at a greater distance from the end 7, as shown at 9 'in FIG. 3b, or else leaving a short tab 12, during cutting of the bag, as shown in Figure 2a.
The thin tab 4 need not necessarily be rectangular, but can also take another shape, for example, it can be trapezoidal. In this case, the feed tube widens towards the discharge opening, as shown in Figure 3.
In the case where the thin tab is obtained by stretching or rolling of the material of the bag, when cutting the bag, a tab 12 is left, as shown in FIG. 2a and this tab is then stretched until that the desired height and thickness are achieved. In this case, the weld bead 5 does not exist.
The invention is not limited to polyethylene bags and can, in general, be applied to bags made from homopolymers or copolymers of polyalkylene and also from mixtures of said polymers and copolymers or other materials. plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride or mixtures of plastics. The bags may, moreover, be reinforced or not with fibrous materials such as rayon, fiberglass, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, linen, etc.
