excess liquid ammonia and possibly in the presence of an alcohol.
Hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene or alternatively ethers such as, for example, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran, can be used as inert solvents.
The 19-nor-steroids, obtained at the end of the denitrylation reaction, can be isolated, according to known methods, for example by dilution of the reaction mixture with alcohol and then with water, extraction using a suitable solvent and recrystallization of the residue. The yields of 10-nor derivatives are very high and can go up to 90% of theory.
The denitrylation reaction for the preparation of 19-nor-steroids can be applied to any steroid of the series Androstane, Pregnane and Cholestane whose oxo groups, possibly present, are protected as a ketal.
The saturated or unsaturated 10-cyano-steroids can generally be used, for example, in position 5 (6) and having in position 3, in position 17 or in position 20 a free or esterified hydroxyl group, or else an oxo group. cetalia. Other substituents, optionally contained in the molecule, do not interfere with the process.
10-cyano-hydroxy and 10-cyano-acyloxy-steroids subjected to denitrylation behave in an analogous manner since they always give hydroxyl compounds. In fact, during the reaction, the acyloxy groups, which may be present, are hydrolysed and converted into free hydroxyl *, On the contrary, the oxo-ketalised groups do not undergo hydrolysis and remain unaltered At the end of the reaction, The denitrylation reaction carried out on the Saturated 10-cyano-sterols gave the corresponding saturated 19-nor-steroids,
